...agony which from time to time convulsed this dumb people," how effective is "Mary Barton" in its attempt to move the reader through its depiction of working class struggles. Elizabeth Gaskell's main purpose of the novel is to bring to light the struggles that are faced by the poor. Gaskell does this through the use of descriptive language and also by presenting a number of themes through certain characters, such as a belief of injustice in the industrial working class. As a female writer, there is much criticism against her for writing a novel so out of depth of her class and gender. However, even with this criticism Gaskell still brings to light key socio-political issues, such as the need for the worker and employer to understand each other. The era in which "Mary Barton" is written is known as the Time of Troubles. During a period of prosperity from 1832 to 1836 during the industrial revolution, Gaskell's experience of these conditions are sensed strongly in the narrative, in particular her contact with the working class in her home city of Manchester, as she "elbows" the working class everyday on the streets. This historic document therefore brings you closer to the struggles of the working class, as suggested by Gaskell: "The more I reflected on this unhappy state of things...as the employers and employed must be, the more anxious I became to give some utterance to the agony." It can be argued that Gaskell does not achieve this and instead removes you slightly from these...

...Ambivalent Sexism and Dumb Blonde Jokes Eryn Haygood Oklahoma State University Diversity can be defined as individuals interacting with different races, nationalities, religions and gender to create a group, organization or community. A diverse organization is an organization that values the variance in people. It identifies that people with different attitudes, backgrounds, experiences, and skills bring in new ideas and opinions. Diverse organization also promotes and join these differences to make everything related and welcoming. These types of organizations have the widest range of views and skills so it can help the need of change for the people who are involved. Diversity encourages and benefits society. In the study of Greenwood and Isbell had three goals that they wanted to complete in their study. The first goal, they wanted to explore a certain sexist joke which are the dumb blonde jokes. These type of jokes are unpleasant to women and extremely known and accepted “form of disparaging humor” (Greenwood et al., 2002). They wanted to know how the reactions of women to these jokes would find out the degree of sexist attitudes. There next goal was to determine the line of sexist humor and ambivalent sexism. The dumb blond jokes may show a result to conflicted heterosexual ambivalence so, hostile and ambivalent sexist might react different to these types of jokes. Hostile sexist may like the jokes more than benevolent sexists and with ambivalent sexist may more may...

...Being a Blonde The social construction about being a blonde has been heard around the world since as early as the 19th century and is still around today. Blonde hair has been and is considered attractive in various European cultures in history and is still seen to be the more appealing hair color. In today’s world, you can find this construction in movies and TV shows like Legally Blonde and Bob’s Burgers, and it’s even portrayed in the music industry with songs like Bridget Mendler’s “I’m a Blonde,”. This stereotype effects blonde’s everyday life’s, whether it’s how they act, or how other people act towards them. In this essay, I am going to research the history of blondes, look at how it constructs a blonde’s identity, and challenge the construction of what it means to be a “blonde” or “dumb blonde”....

...Language” Kirk Johnson talks about different slang expressions most kids use today. Johnson believes this is the ideal language for such a modern world and how enriched our language has become. I use all of these expressions that are mentioned in this essay such as “duh” and “like” for example. The usage of this language is used in ways like “I’m so done like I don’t even know why she did that.” The usage of the word “duh” can be explained by this quote, “Well obviously I got my homework done duh.”Other examples of slang language are how some girls in my grade have code names for certain people. Instead of using their names they replace it with the name of a food or object....

...old, and everyone thinks it’s cute. At that time I figured, since I got along with adults so well, I must be pretty much on par. I knew I had facts and figures to learn, but obviously I operated on a similar level. But then I turned 10, and I could plainly see how much sophistication I lacked when I was only 6. I’ll skip the montage, you get it, this is an ongoing process. But think about this. Now that you’re an adult, when is the last time you can remember being young and dumb? What is the oldest you can remember being, when you were a categorically different person? I remember turning 18, and I’m talking to this girl online for a couple months, and fast forward a year and I’ve eloped with her. That was dumb. I’m 21, I’m spending a lot of my week as an officer in this “business fraternity” at my third tier business school because I have this vague idea that it’s a “great networking opportunity,” whatever the fuck that means. That was pretty dumb. It gets fuzzier at that point. As an adult you have fewer growth experiences than you do as a child, so it takes longer. The gap between now and when you were young and dumb gets longer and longer. That’s a bad thing. I have a theory that you should strive to keep that gap as short as possible. Every year you should look back and think about what a dumbass you were a year ago. That way, you know you’re growing. To phrase it another way, if you look back and don’t see how much of a dumbass you were a year ago,...

...I came to this thread because I find these discussions funny, not because I consider him a leader. You say I support his comments about paedophiles because I don't condemn them, I haven't read this article nor do I want to because I don't care. It is most likely out of context. Yes I do believe you don’t care. "if you did not support paedophiles, rapist and devalue those with Down syndrome, then you would not have to hide behind a fake profile"... that has to be the dumbest thing you have said so far lol. Are you disabled? I am being serious because I won't reply if you are, I feel like I'm talking to an unstable person. You just seem to never answer questions and go in circles and spread hate. You brought up the topic of paedophilia and then...

...English 1020 Beauty by Tony Hoagland I found this poem to be both sad and uplifting. It tells the story of two sisters, one the butterfly perfectly shaded, finding all the most perfect flowers; the other one, the voyeur, in the background watching and amazed at the flight of the butterfly. The sister tells the story of how beautiful her sister had been until the medication she was taking caused permanent blue stitches that formed across her cheeks. The beautiful sister knowing that her beauty was gone forever, seemed to let it go like it was a burden to her for the longest time. After all those years of watching her sister nurture her beauty, the narrator knew more than anyone else what those tiny blue stitches would cost her sister. The narrator reflects back to high school years when her sister had perfected the art of being a dumb blond, the way she stood in the breezeway tossing her “bedspring” hair. “Laughing with that canary trill voice,” her specialty. There were hints of jealousy from these statements. She had a football player for a boyfriend, most likely the star of the team. He would do anything she wanted as you could tell from the “pained expression in his eyes.” The beautiful sister didn’t date men; she held “auditions,” looking for the one man who had the attention span that would hold her interests. She looked for ten long years, and still was not married. In these times most women were married younger, but these women didn’t...

...Has my reader seen the movie Dumb and Dumber? If so, this essay is going to sound familiar to the film. If the reader have not seen that movie I strongly suggest taking a quick view of the film to understand what I am going to be explaining and because it is one of the funniest movies of all time. In this essay, I plan to explain proxemics, non-verbal behavior, and influences that shape non-verbal behavior related to the film Dumb and Dumber. Even more, I would like my readers to have a better understanding of these three topics after reading this paper. To begin, proxemics is the study of the way people and animals use space (Adler). In the film Dumb and Dumber, there is a scene where Harry and Lloyd are discussing Freda Feltcher, a girl they both knew from high school, in a hot tub inside of a hotel room. Not to mention the hot tub is in the shape of a heart, not a regular hot tub. This is a great example of intimate distance....

... Dr. Dennis Hurley 12/01/2009 posted in Money & Taxes Three Dumb Mistakes Foreign Companies Do In China A month ago, Apple sold only 5,000 iPhones in its China debut, as against 65,000 in much smaller Korea. It is too early to declare the iPhone a failure in the country, but the launch missed expectations by a mile. Apple follows a long roster of businesses like eBay that have made the dumb mistake of not taking into account local Chinese consumer preferences, as I wrote in “HowApple and IPhone Blew It In China.” Apple should have taken a cue from the German carmaker BMW. BMW localizes for Chinese consumers. The average Chinese buyer of luxury cars such as BMW, Mercedes and Bentley is 40 years old, much younger than in other markets. He has a chauffeur for weekdays but hits the freeways himself on weekends. BMW accommodated local habits by extending the backseat legroom in its Series 5 line by several inches. It also created its first social media site, MyBMWClub.cn, to appeal to younger owners. Using an understanding of local consumers in developing its strategies has worked for the company. In 2009 through October, BMW has sold 71,952 vehicles in China, up 36.7% from 52,622 a year before. The country is now the company’s largest market for its flagship Series 7 line, and its fourth largest market overall. Aside from not taking local consumer preferences into account, here are two other dumb mistakes that many foreign companies make and you should avoid: First...

...INTRODUCTION ..................................................................................................................................... The following is a critical comparison of the design firm’s M&C Saatchi and McCAN Australia. I have chosen these two firms as they are both from the advertising sector. I will be comparing the following: - Sector - Size of the firm - Awards and industry recognition - Campaigns and clients - Conception of design - Creative process methods SECTOR ..................................................................................................................................... Both McCann and M&C Saatchi are in the advertising sector. ‘During the last decade there have been substantial changes and developments in the global advertising industry’ [1] and within that time both McCann and M&C Saatchi have emerged as leaders in the industry of advertising in Australia. M&C Saatchi Sydney has become one of Australia’s largest and most successful marketing agencies, a global marketing services business working across a wide variety of industry sectors. It is made up of more than 360 staff, seven companies, two offices (Sydney and Melbourne) and a client roster laden with iconic brands. M&C Saatchi abides by it’s founding philosophy, ‘Brutal simplicity of thought’ in order to create effective advertising for many brands including google, ANZ, Westfield, and many more. On the other hand McCann Australia opened in...

...Question 1 a. A dumb terminal has no processing power and cannot function as an independent device. Dumb terminals connect to a host computer that performs the processing and then sends the output back to the dumb terminal. An intelligent terminal has memory and a processor that has the capability of performing some functions independent of the host computer. b. Advantages of using network computer as compared to personal computer. Network computer is a collection of computers and devices connected together via communication devices. They allow users to share resources such as hardware devices, software devices, data and information. A personal computer performs all of its inputs, processing, output and storage activities by itself. Personal computer includes desktop computers and notebook computers. Personal computers are portable and small enough to fit on your lap. c. Cut and paste. Cut enables one to completely remove a letter, word, figure or a paragraph from any part of the document. Paste allows the user to place copied or items that had been cut to any part of the document. Cut and paste therefore allows a user to edit his/her document through inserting pictures copied from other documents. d. Data sort allows the user to arrange his/ her list in any order of choice. For example sorting data according to alphabetical order. e. Print preview allows the user to have a view his/her document before printing. It enables the user to check what the page would look...
