Holmes Community College, the best school I’ve ever been to in the history of going to school, is located in Ridgeland, Mississippi. HCC provides you with many great things like, a library full of great librarians, a student union with different food options and even sitting area to enjoy your food, and they also have awesome instructors. Another thing I like about Holmes is that it was a smooth transition from high school to college. Yes true enough it was more expectations, but I knew most of it from high school. The instructors, staff, and peers are all so friendly. Anything you need help with there is always someone around...

...Putting an End to Bullying Therese McMullen Upper Iowa University Being a former victim of bullying, I used to feel that there needed to be stricter punishments for bullies. Out of all of the fallacies we reviewed in class, I believe this falls under “begging the question.” I was biased; because I had so much anger toward the bullies, I felt they needed to be punished. After reading several articles on the issues, I think it makes more sense to stop it before it even starts. Bullying in schools is a problem around the world that negatively affects the general school atmosphere and the ability learn in a school setting without fear (Banks, n.d.). Bullying can also have long term effects on the bully, the victim, and even bystanders. Children that are bullied will be more likely than their peers to anxiety and depression. They may also experience increased loneliness and sadness, and a change in eating patterns and difficulty sleeping. These issues can continue through adulthood. A small number of bullied children may get revenge through extreme measures. In 12 out of 15 school shootings in the 1990s, the shooters had been bullied (Kennedy, n.d.). Bullies also are affected by their actions. They tend to engage in these violent and risky behaviors well into adulthood. They will be more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol as adolescents and into adulthood. They may also become sexually active at an early age, and be abusive with their children and spouses as adults...

...want not” philosophy. With that in mind, consider physics teacher Bobby Mercer's new 212 page paper-back book, Junk Drawer Engineering: 25 Construction Challenges That Don't Cost a Thing. Junk Drawer Engineering continues the popular Junk Drawer Science series, which also includes Junk Drawer Physics: 50 Awesome Experiments That Don't Cost a Thing and Junk Drawer Chemistry: 50 Awesome Experiments That Don't Cost a Thing, also available in print or Kindle electronic formats. Junk Drawer Engineering details how to construct 25 challenges including a pasta bridge, marble roller coaster, marshmallow tower, milk carton sound wave amplifier, or egg catch device, from items you would ordinarily throw away. The book begins with a brief “Introduction: What is Engineering,” stating that “A basic approach will be shown to give you the ability to do each project, but engineering is about thinking outside the box and devising new ways to do things. You are encouraged to try new methods—you never know what new and creative ways you will think of.” Mercer divides projects into three categories: Energy,...

...The Pyramids at Giza Construction Julian Grant Humanities 111 Professor Emerick April 29, 2014 This is another unbelievable story, as there are many mysteries as it certainly is fascinating. The two particular theories as the “transport theory” which is presented by engineer and inventor, Andrzej Bochnacki, a Polish engineer as his book proposes very inventive technology for moving the pyramid blocks from the pits to the construction place. He presents the method from which the stones moved to making the entire pyramid. He said that they must have made the paper boats which were placed on the top of the blocks and knotted up with ropes (Bochnacki, 1994). These movable boats were in wait to raise the water of Nile and so they can be easily dragged to a chosen destination. The easiest way was to drag them to the west region of Nile where water flooded the fields. The second theory is the Limestone concrete theory by Materials scientist, Joseph Davidovits, that holds the spotlight of many historians and scientists, he is an International renown French Scientist, born in 1935, working in France, Europe, USA, Australia and China. Most Egyptologists reject the idea, put forth in the mid-1980s by French chemist Joseph Davidovits, that the pyramids contain concrete. Barsoum’s team took a fresh look at 15 samples using scanning- and transmission-electron microscopes. The samples contain ratios...

...Dope, Dope, or Dope? This will likely be the most dope paper ever written. Unless of course, the author is a complete dope and does not know how to write. Maybe it will be so bad that the reader will want to use dope to recover from the reading. So which one is it? Dope, dope, or dope? Over the years, many words go through transitions in their usage and meaning. The adjective dope serves as an excellent example of one of these such words. Who really even knows what it means anymore having gone through change after change depending on the era, user and situation as well as many other factors. Based off these various reasons, the word dope has taken on many different meanings over the years ranging from gravy, to stupid, to drugs, and the most recent definition being cool or awesome. As the time period shapes the word and redefines it, users should strive to use the most recent definition to prevent miscommunication. In this specific case, Dope should be redefined as a word to be used synonymously with awesome or cool to describe something as being really neat or impressive. Dope originally held the meaning in 1807 of describing a gravy or other viscous liquid coming from the Dutch word doopen, meaning “to dip.” The first ever official recording of the word in any form of dictionary or written ledger however was not until 1851 and carried a whole new meaning. At this time it was utilized as a form of American slang describing a silly or stupid person according to the Oxford...

...Adam Smith and The Lego Movie Midterm Paper In the Warner Brother’s production, The Lego Movie, many of the characters, scenes, themes, and movie lines illustrate the ideas of the economist, Adam Smith. Smith expresses his ideas through two of his books, The Wealth of Nations and The Theory of Moral Sentiments. In The Wealth of Nations, Smith explains “what it means to be ‘wealthy’ in a commercial society,” and in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Smith explains “how deeply flawed humans learn to be civil, cooperative, happy, and free” (Garnett). In these two books, Smith writes about not only what he thinks is most beneficial for a growing economy, but also about what is most detrimental. The Lego Movie illustrates both of Smith’s views of the economy through the components and make-up of the movie. One Smithian idea appears in the lines of The Lego Movie’s theme song, “Everything is Awesome.” The lyrics are as follows: “We’re all working in harmony. Everything is awesome. Everything is cool when you’re a part of a team.” Smith’s example of the woolen coat from The Wealth of Nations is represented through these song lyrics. “The woollen coat… is the produce of the joint labour of a great multitude of workmen” (WNS). This definition from Smith’s work states that the “woolen coat,” which symbolizes wealth, is created through the cooperation and harmony of workmen who all hold different jobs and have different specialties (Garnett). The ‘woolen coat,’ and furthermore, the division...

...Principles of Marketing Jared A. Cook 09-12-2014 Professor Ashby Brame Component Lifestyles What are my component lifestyles, you ask? What exactly is a component lifestyle? What do I like or what am I interested in? What makes me tick, per say? I guess at this point in my life I can narrow it down to three things, besides being in school full time. Those three components happen to be Caffeine, Cars, and Music. Why these three? Well, caffeine helps me cope with something called the morning, cars are fun and very fast sometimes, and music is just awesome. I’m writing this paper to describe why I like these things and how they are marketed to me. Oh, and thanks for taking interest because my life is actually pretty awesome. The first component I am going to cover is Caffeine. I work for a company; you may have heard of it, it is kind of popular. They are all over the world in fact. And in New York City, there is one on every street corner, literally. You probably drink their products every day. Ringing any bells? Yup, it is Starbucks. I have been a “partner” with them for nearly seven years. I drink their coffee every day too. I guess you can say I am and addict. Oh well. And the best part is that I rarely have to pay for their products. But, what exactly are their products? Their biggest product is obviously their coffee. Starbucks also produces mugs, tumblers, brewers, grinders, French presses, and so on. But it all comes back to the coffee itself. Almost all the other...

...The city should continue the use of paper ballots. Everyone should be able to access to their right to vote and say they circle or checked the one they believe is right. Would i trust a electronic voting machine? No i would not, reason too it can get hacked. It is not a secure idea to do. We all know there are always technical difficulties. "As recently as 2014, EVMs in Virginia were shut down during an election when dozens of voters reported that the machines had incorrectly recorded their votes." I would not like my votes to be validated incorectly. These are big issues because your votes may go in wrong and in reality everything goes the opposite way because of the technical difficulties. Yes, the electronic voting machines have multiple...

...types of status. A person can have an ascribed status, which is basically a status that a person is born with such as male/female or race. A person can also have an achieved status, which is a status that a person can change such as student, wife, or occupation. With each status that we hold, we also have roles to play. “A role is a set of expectations for people who occupy a given social position or status” (Witt 2011:105). For example, we expect teachers to be great with students and lawyers to know the law. Unfortunately, this is not always the truth. For the duration of this paper, I would like to share important ascribed and achieved statuses that I myself hold in society. Status and Roles Achieved Status and Corresponding Roles For the past seven years, I have been enlisted as a soldier in the United States Army. Not everybody can or even wants to be a soldier, but this is a position that I hold near and dear. I intend on making this a career by continuing to reenlist and not just decide to quit when an enlistment time frame is over. Currently as soldier, I am holding two...
