There are various concepts about the self. These concepts can include self-concept, self-esteem, social comparison, self-consciousness, and self-awareness. In reading Threnody, I found that these concepts could be applied to the story and be applied to the main character, who was Threnody. After reading through the story, the concepts that I thought best applied to this story were self-concept and self-esteem. I think that Threnody displayed various concepts of the self, but I felt that these three were the most relevant concepts.
Self- concept is a knowledge that contains information about us (notes). Self-concept can also be thought of as how well we know ourselves and the characteristics that we possess as an individual. For Threnody, I …show more content…
Self-esteem is an evaluation of ourselves how favorably we evaluate ourselves (notes). I saw many examples of self-esteem and Threnody had a mixture of high and low self-esteem. When she talked about her childhood, she had pretty high self-esteemed. She mentions in the story that she thought of herself as a pretty child and liked the way she dressed when she went to school. I think the main example of Threnody’s low self-esteem came from her name. She talked about how she did not like her name and that she believed no one else liked her name besides her mother. She also talked about what her name meant and how that was going to influence her fate. “As for me, I belonged to no one and had my own fate. Threnody. Dirge or lament” (Weldon, pg. 600), this quotes struck out to me because it showed how much she disliked her name and took to heart what her name meant. I think that if someone doesn’t like their name, it can affect their self-esteem because they are not going to be confident in various aspects of their life. It also did not help that Threnody thought that the meaning of her name was going to decide her fate, as in her name predicted what type of future she was going to

...Dudley Buck composed his oratorio The Light of Asia in 1886; it became the first in the history of the genre to be based on the life of Buddha. The 21st century also saw a continuation of Christianity-based oratorios with John Adams's El Niño. Other religions represented include Ilaiyaraaja's Thiruvasakam (based on the texts of Hindu hymns to Shiva). Secular oratorios composed in the 21st century include Nathan Currier's Gaian Variations (based on the Gaia hypothesis), Richard Einhorn's The Origin (based on the writings of Charles Darwin), Jonathan Mills' Sandakan Threnody (based on the Sandakan Death Marches), and Neil Hannon's To Our Fathers in Distress (Cusins, 1882). George Frideric Handel’s oratorios, and famed Hallelujah chorus, written two and a half centuries ago, has been performed continuously today. Small North American towns have featured a performance of Messiah every year as a staple of Christmastime celebrations; and larger urban centers often offer several performances, some incorporating audience sing-along. From their beginnings, Handel’s oratorios have marked the meeting place of community worship with the grandeur and glory of power—political, sacred, and musical (Chapter 23...

A Comparison of Jane Eyre and Lin Daiyu in the View of Philosophy and Feminism

...A Comparison of Jane Eyre and Lin Daiyu in the View of Philosophy and Feminism I. Introduction 1.1 A Brief Introduction of Jane Eyre and Lin Daiyu “A Dream of Red Mansions” is one of the most outstanding works of China’s classic novels of realism. It bases on the background of Jia, Shi, Wang, Xue four families’ rising and falling, with the clue of the love tragedy of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. It truly and artistically reflects the historically declining trend of China’s feudal society. “A Dream of Red Mansions” can also be described as “Girls’ Country”, which is the anthem of female, but also is the threnody of women. The heroine Lin Daiyu, Annatto Fairy, wants to repay the goodness of God Shen Yin, taking her lifetime of tears in exchange for his being saved. Her rebellious sprit and solitary character, makes her as a lotus opening at a secluded place, clinging to her own pureness—for pure you came and pure shall go. She is sentimental and unfortunate, and is doomed to being lonely and pathetical .She, Lin Daiyu, lives under another’s house—Rong mansion, Grand View Garden, and she has no one to complain her sadness to. She is “Yea to the very end of heaven, Where I could find a fragrant grave!” in frustration, “What time the third moon comes, the scented nests have been already built. And on the beams the swallows perch, excessive spiritless and staid” in sorrow, and finally ends up with the sadness of “Flowers fade and maidens die; and of either naught any more is known”...
