Questions for Your Car Mechanic

Let's talk about a list of valid questions for your car mechanic. When automotive consumers find themselves at a retail auto repair center things go down like this. The mechanic checks out your automobile and tells the service advisor what’s wrong with it. Then the shop creates an estimate of repair attaching parts and labor charges to the mechanics diagnosis.

The final step in the process becomes selling this estimate to the car owner. In this conversation it’s the goal of the service advisor to explain the necessary repairs and the associated charges in the form of a question. Skilled automotive service sales people expect the customer to respond with a one-word answer. Yes, go ahead and do it. Believe it …show more content…
With that said, some of these tools can actually save you money. Let me explain this point a little further. In many situations when diagnosing failed automotive parts, technicians use the amount of play or looseness to determine failure of that component. As an example, the technician says the driver side upper ball joint needs replacement. The consumer asks why and the mechanics states, “because there's too much play in the ball and socket joint”.

Even experienced mechanics can find it difficult to perform precision measurements with just looking at the amount of movement in a ball joint. Therefore, these mechanics use a device called a dial indicator. This precision measuring tool mounts on the control arm. It measures the exact amount of free play in the ball joint. The vehicle manufacturer supplies free play specifications in the [[professional auto repair manual]]. To make a long story short, shaking a front end part and calling it bad, because of free play is kind of …show more content…
These tools remain important to consumers, because these measuring tools save them money on replacement parts. Unfortunately, a complete mechanics toolset is an expensive investment built over time. Therefore, technicians can often put off the purchase of precision measuring devices. In fact, they often focus on tools that make their job easier and faster. Precision measuring tools can often slow things down as they take some time to set up.

They can also prove that a component doesn't need replacing. Do you see where I'm going with this? Owning precision measuring tools can mean less money in the mechanics pocket. Therefore, a technician that owns a precision straight edge, a micrometer set and a dial indicator shows a commitment to customer satisfaction. This means they are willing to take the time and invest money in the tools to properly diagnose [[many auto repair

...The passion that I am going to talking about is being an auto mechanic and all of the things that come along with being an auto mechanic. Being an auto mechanic is not a job for everyone, but I believe it is the right job for me. Being an auto mechanic requires many different things including having a wide range of tools, extensive knowledge about the automobiles and the to work on them everyday. One of the most important purchases for a mechanic is his tools. One of the requirements for just about every auto mechanic job is that you bring your own tools. The reason for this is that while mechanics are trusted to work on vehicles, If a shop provided them tools to do work there would be no guarantee that the tools would be put back where in...

...receive quick, reliable services at a fair price. Alan employee’s seven mechanics and two office workers. Gil and Hans are the two oldest mechanics and they are the easiest to supervise. When Alan assigns work to them (mostly high-precision, specialist jobs), they do it quickly and hardly ever make a mistake. Bart and Herbie are also skilled mechanics and Bart specializes in repairing motorcycles, and Herbie is whiz at troubleshooting engine problems. Three younger workers do the jobs that call for lower-level skills under Alan’s more careful guidance. Kirk has a degree in industrial arts but he could not get a job in his specialty without moving to another city and he seems to have resigned himself to auto repair work. Lamont enjoys working on sports cars and is getting to be quite an expert at operating the electronic diagnostic machines. Joanie does general mechanical work and does it well. Alan takes care of customers when they drop off their cars in the morning, then he plans the work schedule and assigns the mechanics to work on particular cars. Most of the work is done by individual mechanics but occasionally a job requires two mechanics to work together. The work of repairing cars and conducting routine maintenance on them is welldefined; there are standard procedures and standard times to perform each type of repair task. Mechanics receive feedback about the quality of their work from testing the car and from customers (who will complain if something is not fixed properly)...

Michaels Auto Repair Shop

...(including 1000 mechanics). Last year, Michael’s decided to launch a Mobile Mechanic Service (MMS) which enabled the customer to call for a mechanic at the site of the breakdown. The service operated from a Central Control Room (CCR), a call center which received customers’ request and handed them over to various Regional Warehouse Units (RWUs) which housed the mechanics with their pick-up trucks. The mechanics from the RWU received the customer’s request along with the directions of the site of the breakdown and would drive down to the site in their pick up trucks. The instructions to the mechanics were to complete the job on site if it could be completed within 45 minutes with the spares available, or else to tow the car back to the RWU. The RWU also had a support staff that ensured that the pick-up trucks were well stocked with spares and ready for the next service visit. Low productivity Since the business started 10 years ago, the top management of Michael’s was concerned about the productivity of their mechanics, but with the launch of the MMS, this issue became more visible. An analysis of the data showed that on an average, the mechanics were servicing 2.5 cars per day, far fewer than what was expected, since servicing one car took less than an hour to complete. Peter D’Souza, an MBA from a premier institute was recently recruited as the Chief of Operations and was assigned the task of finding a solution to this problem. On discussing with the mechanics and their supervisors...

One reason is that Auto Mechanics is because to me it’s an interesting field to me. I decided to explore the topic a little more to get a better understanding of what it would take to become a successful automotive technician . I have lived through the auto mechanics field pretty much all through my life. Well actually since I have been born. The reason of this is very simple. That is because my very own dad is an auto mechanic himself. Well actually to be more exact, he owns his own auto mechanic shop. Since I was little I have always helped him at his work because I have always enjoyed working with vehicles. Since the very first day that I started working with him I already knew that the automotive field was the job for me. Since I was a baby my very own parents use to tell me that I would disappear out of their sight. And when they used to find me I used to be playing with the tools besides my dad helping him out. Mechanist Behaviour

...1. A union exists and Dinesh is a part of it. 2. Since this problem exists elsewhere in the organization the training program can be organization wide. Since mechanists are not skilled labour and still they get away without being fired shows that the organization is one, which has a union. Since Ganesh has no complaints with the work that Dinesh does and since Dinesh is known for his temper and alcoholism Dinesh seems to be facing some kind of problem in family or factory. He is not someone who evades work by nature or is ineffective but only reacts badly to situations a few times. He is facing some kind of pressure and when it becomes too much he takes his anger out on someone in the work place. The fact that he has been with the organization for 5 years seem to suggest that he feels fairly experienced and does not want the supervisor to tell him to do things other than what he was already doing. "Critical Incidents Method" can be used effectively here. The work of a mechanist is quite routine and does not need constant appraisal. It would be better if the appraisal system were such that it only takes into account special events. Since this kind of behaviour exists elsewhere in the job it suggests that there is some sort of pressure in the job. This could also be caused due to the monotonous nature of the work. A training program designed to release stress can prove beneficial here. Yoga is something that comes to mind immediately. The problem of the...
