...Larry spotted him sitting alone on a bench across the street from the high school on Vincennes Street. He had not seen Ritchie Braddock for quite a while, at least a few months by now. Everybody recognizes Ritchie Braddock; he’s a legend, kind of a miracle boy. Besides that, he’s an old buddy and Larry wanted to catch up. Ritchie, a sort of shy and bashful kid, was suddenly launched into stardom a couple years ago by sinking a last-minute jump shot in the state basketball finals to put his team in the championship game. Ritchie is a good guy to hang out with for reasons other than his minor stardom. He’s a local basketball legend; not a great player, but a good one. And most of all, a real lucky one. Ritchie Braddock is what you call a nice, quiet guy, who never makes trouble, is a fair athlete, and does well with his studies. He mainly keeps to himself, except for one or two good friends. He lives in a spare back room at Mrs....

Marin is like a role-model for Esperanza since she shows traits of confidence when talking to boys and does not shy away. This is shown in paragraph four, “What matters, Marin says, is for the boys to see us and for us to see them…Marin’s skirts are shorter and since her eyes are pretty, and since Marin is already older than us in many ways, the boys who do pass by say stupid things like I am in love with those two green apples you call eyes, give them to me why don’t you. And Marin just looks at them without even blinking and is not afraid.” Marin also longs for...

...that Ferraro continues to relive. But these days, as the Teacher Training Director of the Mind Body Awareness Project, it’s Ferraro who is looking into angry young eyes until he finds a glimpse of compassion. Based in Oakland, California, the MBA Project is a nonprofit organization that uses mindfulness and emotionalintelligence exercises to equip disadvantaged and underserved youth with the tools to make better decisions and to consider more skillful options than violence, self-harm, drugs, and crime. “All my work revolves around the same conversation,” says Ferraro. “What is freedom beyond conditions? Beyond this school, this prison, this hood, whatever your conditions are. Do your conditions lead inevitably to suffering? No, they don’t. Only a being’s perspective leads to suffering. Two people in the exact same situation, according to their outlook and expectations, can have completely different experiences. Turn that around, and any conditions can be a vehicle for bondage—or freedom and awakening. And that’s fucking deep, man.” Going back to his story about the homeless man, Ferraro says, “I didn’t know what compassion meant when I was fifteen. But I knew that that homeless guy had seen my heart. And that was scary. I’d learned early on that this heart of mine was not a A charismatic ex-con lures at-risk kids away from violence. ...The Orange Sidewalk (Rough Draft) It was a chilly day in September, quiet as most days, as there usually isn't a lot of activity in this neighborhood. Besides the neighborhood kids walking to the recreation center and a few passing cars, the streets and sidewalks were only filled with orange and yellow leaves falling off the trees. I spent the last year and a half sitting on my front porch watching the other kids enjoy their water fights in the summer or snowball fights in the winter. Most days I'd wish for an hour to join my friends in these activities but this was always out of the question. I can only blame myself as I spent most of my younger years running away from home from my biological mother Michelle. In the state's eye and in any...

...Jacobs argues that cities should be designed in a way that assimilates children on the streets. Jacobs writes that city streets should serve as an “unspecialized outdoor home base” where children can “form their notions of the world” (Jacobs 81). While Jacobs believes that an urban environment is suitable for raising children, cities prove to be an unsafe and unhealthy place to grow up. Children raised in an urban environment are not properly supervised which leads them to be exposed to mature subjects prematurely. In order to experience a healthy and happy childhood, children should not be brought up in an urban environment. Jacobs’ argument that children should make the streets...

A tall and slender boy popped out from the back of the van, his blonde bangs in his eyes. My mother noticed him first. “Oh, you have kids?” Mom asked with a smile. “Just Benji, and he’s not really a kid, he’s fourteen. Practically a man!” The man who I presumed was Benji’s father put an arm around the boy and ruffled his hair.He leaned down so he was eye level with me.” And how old’s this cutie?” His breath smelled like tobacco and something else I couldn’t place. ...Windshield Survey and Reflection Tiffany Moore NSG/420 5/20/2016 Jenny Abbott A windshield survey was conducted in a low-income community of Fresno, California to retrieve a detailed assessment of a community, community health, and community as client through visual observations within the surrounding of the community. Community can be defined as a group of people, often living in a defined geographical area, who may share a common culture, values and norms, and are arranged in a social structure according to relationships which the community has developed over a period of time” (MacQueen, et al., 2010). Community health includes the characteristics that promote positive health of the population in the surrounding environment. Health goals are promoted through the nursing process from assessment through evaluation and are directly measured through statistics (Seibert, 2015). The focus of the community as a client occurs when nurses are in the forefront of direct care in the private homes of patients, not limiting to only hospital-based care (Sommer, et al., 2013). Partnerships are shared to improve the overall quality of health within the community and are determined through assessing common problems and behaviors (Seibert, 2015). According to healthy 2020 a leading health concern is the environmental quality. The environment directly affects health status and plays a major role in quality of life, years of healthy life live, and health disparities (Office of disease...

...out of the airport to a blast of humidity. After two flights, a crazy landing, customs, baggage claim, and a hasty, sweaty introduction to Pastor Jorge Pinto, all thirteen members of our mission team were slowing making our way through the crowd to our awaiting van. I took a deep breath as the realization sunk in- after three months of dreaming of this moment, I was finally in Honduras. Climbing in what barely passed as a vehicle, the 15 seater, covered in dust, navy blue van (which sounded like a dying whale) roared to life, and as our driver stepped on the gas and laid on the horn, we peeled out of the parking lot and onto the streets of the capital city, Tegucigalpa. It was chaotic. The narrow sidewalks crowded, shops lit up, and cars weaved in and out of each other. Cruising through the foreign streets that looked over the thousands of rooftops below I closed my eyes, laid back and began to enjoy the hour long drive into the small town of Talanga. Or so I thought. I was awakened by the sound of a...

...Levitating discreteness: The secret of street performers Introduction Street performers (‘SP’) are the people performing in public areas, for gratuities. SP can vary from acrobats, magicians, clowning, comedians, musical and etc. In this analysis, I examined the different procedures of attracting and maintain the audience in street performances, supporting Goffman’s argument of ‘appearance’ and ‘performance‘ in accordance to the expected standards as well as discussing Henrique’s 3 proliferations of street performances. Methodology This research is primarily based on ethnography tests, supported with informal interviews, images and videos. I have observed and collected qualitative data from 4 different street performers, within two days in Covent Garden, London. During these observations, various informal conversations occurred with performers. My research design was based on observing and writing field notes on their initial start-up of the performance, during the actual performance, and followed by an informal conversation with SPs after the show. This is because observing people can expose us to the tacit and implicit behavior of SP, in which interview or conversation alone wont be competent. In comprehending with ethical code of conduct, SP granted the permission for me to take qualitative data for his show. However, taking picture of audience’s face is prohibited and therefore in this study, there are no facial representations, aside from the SP’s. Background...

...they continue in the streets robbing and killing because they know that nothing will happen to them because, simply put, they are minors. I think if a minor kills a human being they should be killed as well, regardless of age. As a minor you should know it’s wrong to take another life. There was one crime in particular that caught my eye and I believe it was called the Pearl High School shooting in Pearl, Mississippi. Sixteen year old Luke Woodham woke up on October 1st, 1997 and stabbed his mother to death as she peacefully slept in her bed. After stabbing her, he drove his dead mom’s car to school, walked in the front door of the school, and opened fire. After a couple minutes of shooting he got back into his moms van and tried driving off. The school principal had a gun in his car so he retrieved it and somehow stopped Luke. He asked Luke why he shot his kids and Luke replied “Life has wronged me, sir.” A couple minutes before the shooting started he gave this message to a friend "I am not insane, I am angry. I killed because people like me are mistreated every day. I did this to show society, push us and we will push back. All throughout my life, I was ridiculed, always beaten, always hated. Can you, society, truly blame me for what I do? Yes, you will. It was not a cry for attention and it was not a cry for help. It was a scream in sheer agony saying that if you can't pry your eyes open, if I can't do it through pacifism, if I can't show you through the displaying of intelligence...

...the body processes things in our everyday lives. There are two types of perception visual and auditory. Visual perception is as it suggest, the seeing and viewing of things through the eyes. Whereas auditory perception is the perception of hearing things and understanding how close they can be. Perception is used even when we do not believe we are using it. Understanding visual perception is not complex, but I always try to think of things in a different manner. Ironically, I see visual perception as a sort of streaming process that allows the eyes to pick up all kinds of details and situations. The eyes are very complex, but we only see the things the brain believes to be important. The brain tells the eyes to compress...

...Just an hour ago, it was raining, but that ceased as well. The city streets were full of people bustling and hurrying about getting to their destinations. A few teenagers walked along the street. The desolate streets of one particular section of the city were strangely alive tonight. Thin, gunmetal clouds which once blocked out the night sky had now opened up, revealing a large dark blue sky and a sea of glittering stars, which shone brightly, embedded like a thousand tiny diamonds encrusted upon its surface. White string lights were hung up above on a green overpass roof. A tan banner also hung from it, and written in faded letters were "Brooklyn Coal," across it, and five lit street lamps were there as well. There was a small garden store right next to the magazine and vegetable and fruit stand. Tan baskets of...

...Everybody has a conscious, W.E Du bois however states some people have two, a double consciousness is created by society through Discrimination in all of its forms. Discrimination is an unjust act of hate and prejudice towards another group of people, however art can be used as a means to fight against it, the movie The Interrupters shows how someone can break through the barriers of discrimination and bring light to a dark situation. Discrimination is a negative part of life everyone has experienced to different extremes, everyone has a different way to fight back, some people chose to use art. In the essay “ From the Souls of Black Folk: Of our Spiritual Strivings” by W. E. Du Bois, he talks in depth about the struggle of African American Life directly following the Emancipation proclamation. Du Bois writes in great detail about the state of mind known as the Double Consciousness. He states “ … the negro is a sort of seventh son, born with a veil, and gifted with second sight in this American World, a world in which yields him no true -self consciousness, but only lets him see himself through the revelation of the other world (Du Bois 132). “ Du Bois is stating that the way an African American is viewed during this time period is different than the way he sees himself. He feels like he is split into two, his American side and his African side, both cultures pulling at him but not wanting to separate from either. (132). The Double Consciousness is a concept that is still...
