Alexa Brown AP English Period:4 To This Day Imagine waking up to beautiful mornings everyday only to dread it. To wish you never woke up, but stayed in the world you created. The world where nobody called you a different name, where they didn’t pick on you, where you made the rules and where you felt safe. Why didn’t you feel safe awake? Why couldn’t you be free? Bernard Kelvin Clive once said, “Your mind can be either your prison or your palace. What you make it is yours to decide.” My mind is both. I can be free, but when I think of the things they said it makes me feel like “I’m the background noise of a soundtrack stuck on repeat” (Shane Koyczan). Remember that one kid you saw on the playground. The one you saw in the corner by themselves, the one who had no one to laugh, play, or talk too. I was that one kid. I was the kid who was an outsider, the one who didn’t belong to any clique, and definitely the one who had no friends. I was alone. I was surrounded by those who would say “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” As if those broken bones hurt more than the words we were called. We were told them all so we grew up believing we will be nothing. Nobody will ever fall in love with us or that we’d be lonely forever. “So broken heart strings bled the blues as we tried to empty ourselves so we would feel nothing. Don’t tell me that hurts less than a broken bone. It does” (Shane Koyczan). Nobody knew how I felt like I was lost in a dark abyss with no escape. The anguish, the pain, and the sadness. I cried out, “ Stop,” but did they listen? No , they continued. With an arsenal of name calling such as: “Hey ugly!” “Stupid ugly b****!” There were more and each scarred me in a way like no other. However, I learned how to build a cast around my heart and bandage

...Words “To This Day” is an animated poem released on YouTube in February of 2013 written and spoken by Shane Koyczan. Koyczan’s purpose is to inform individuals of the countless hurdles bullying and simple words can create for an individual in their present and future. He uses Pathos to create a dramatic and heartfelt tone in order to convey to his audience the lasting effect words can have. Is Marriage Necessary in This Day and Age?

...Once you reach a certain age or a certain amount of time spent with the same partner, especially as a woman, friends and family will inevitably start asking questions about marriage or even downright pressure you into taking this step. But is getting married such a good idea? I believe not, since, nowadays, at least in the developed countries, it doesn’t bring truly valuable benefits. Marriage is no longer necessary legally or practically. Once upon a time, for a woman, getting married meant ensuring financial security and gaining access to a variety of legal rights they wouldn’t dream of otherwise. But now, in the modern world, years after the feminist movement has established legal rights for women, we no longer need marriage to get access to certain benefits. Nowadays, women are highly educated and actually constitute the majority of the workforce in the US. Furthermore, we no longer require a marriage license to be allowed to visit our partner in the hospital, and, for a lot of us, getting married doesn’t even imply a tax break. Marriage does not guarantee fidelity. Many people get married hoping that the sanctity of marriage will reduce the chances of being cheated on. But if your spouse doesn’t respect your relationship and is tempted to cheat, a piece of paper will have no power in preventing infidelity. Actually, it seems that in around half of marriages, one of the spouses will have an extra-marital relation at some point. There’s no longer a stigma on you if you have...

Joseph Mccarthy This Day In History Summary

...This Day in History: April 21 On April 21, 1953, two aides to Senator Joseph McCarthy returned to the United States after traveling to several European posts of the United States Information Service (USIS) – a government agency founded to disseminate pro-American propaganda to foreign peoples through public speakers, films, and literature. These aides, Roy Cohn and David Schine, were tasked with investigating USIS posts for subversives, communists, and materials that would spread anti-capitalist messages. They were deeply disturbed by the literature they found on the library shelves of USIS posts: literature belonging to authors such as by W.E.B Du Bois, Herman Melville, and John Steinbeck. Cohn and Schine recommended to the State Department that over 30,000 books be removed from USIS facilities, as they felt those works espoused views that were pro-communist, and therefore, anti-American. The State Department carried out what Cohn and Shine recommended, but the pair’s actions in Europe were not seen in a positive light by the European and American presses. The two men...

To This Day By Shane Koyczan-A Prior Victim Of Bullying

...Society often tends to create meanings for words that should not have a solid meaning, an example of this would be the word "beauty". What is beauty? No one knows the answer to this; some define it as happiness, like the moments that you cherish in your life. Others describe it as good looks, high cheekbones and plump lips. Society manipulates us to make us think that our physical appearance and the satisfaction of other people's aesthetic senses is what defines beauty; and often, that is what triggers bullying. Bullying is a widespread problem that has plagued nearly every school in the world and has harmed an enormous mass of children; physically and mentally. People that fall victim to bullying often opt to suicide. However, some may have other solutions, such as creating poems and pouring your bottled emotions into them. This video “To This Day” was an excellent example made by Shane Koyczan - a prior victim of bullying. This poem was based on Shane Koyczan’s personal childhood experience....

Give Us This Day Our Daily Lesson Analysis

...Give us This Day our Daily Lesson After reading this article, I believe that the Catholic school boards have an unfair advantage in comparison to public high schools. Due to the funding from churches and the government, I assume Catholic schools must have a larger budget for learning and physical resources. Throughout my high school years, I attended both Catholic and public schools. When attending public schools, the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed. I have found that public school staff takes a bit more time to get to know their students more personally. On account of the fact that most public schools are physically older, the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed. A lot of resources are not up to par with those of Catholic schools, but the fact...

The Correspondence of Popular and Unpopular: Forgetting Biased Ideas in This Day of Age

...are endless of what can be used to determine whether one is popular or not. The most common out of all the choices possible to be deemed popular is whether someone is weird or not. With all of this in mind, many being to question their ranking on this scale. They question their style, amount of income, and essentially their whole demeanor. Sadly, they have failed to realize the extreme similarities between the popular and unpopular. Many people have become so accustomed to the differences of popularity, but many have forgot to identify the similarities between the popular and unpopular. From what I have experienced in life about popularity is that it can take about 10 seconds to be considered unpopular. Anything a person can say or do can lead their fate down to unpopular or up on the popularity charts. As humans, we are constantly in a state of mind that causes us to point out the differences in someone. This emotion is completely normal, but it becomes a problem when someone begins to classify someone in separate groups. A countless number of people have thought that idea of separation is strongly influenced by the supported segregation that took place from the early 1800s to the late 1900s. This idea is quite vague, but as this social segregation continues, we most definitely see this theme staying extremely consistent. The clinical definition of being popular is to be liked, admired, or enjoyed by many people or by a particular person...

...Cost per item, accounts payable (A/P) terms, actual delivery time, average days late on delivery, and total ordered quantity are calculated and compared. Airframe fasteners * Primary supplier: Durrable Products Providing the longest A/P term (45 days), Durrable Products’ shipments are 100% on time and charges the lowest price per item ($4.20) compared to the other two suppliers. Argumentative Essay: The Four-Day School Week

...Today, forty-three school districts and nine charters is expected to change to a four-day school week, but only ten school districts and two charters have actually only switched to the four-day school week. The four-day school week has been a very controversial problem. Currently, twenty-one states have school districts within them that have committed to the four-day school week, include Michigan, and Wisconsin. This has been caused by the lack of federal funding to school districts, in which, causes budget cuts and eventually, the shutdown of school districts. There are two arguments to the four-day school week. One argument is would save money for the school, so, they are for it. The other argument is the school would have more problems with four days in a school week than five days in a school week, so, they are opposed to the four-day school week. Due to the disadvantages of the four-day schools, such...
