...Week One Overview Why Study the Humanities? As students you are in various degree programs, what does the study of humanities hold for you? Are you really expected to care about any of this? What possible use could it be to you as you move through the various phases of your life and progress in your career? The textbook, The Creative Impulse. Sporre, D.J. 2002, defines the humanities as “those aspects of culture that look into the human spirit.” Study of the humanities traditionally includes the arts, literature, philosophy and history, and within history, the advent of technology and early scientific thought. These subjects contribute to our understanding of what it means to think, to feel, to be motivated to take action and to be human. That still sounds a little distant, doesn’t it? It’s not clear at all what any of this has to do with life as we experience it today. Consider this suggestion; that learning about these people with the strange names who lived in strange places so long ago, will open your eyes to the world around you in ways you never imagined. It will prompt you to think in new ways and to see connections between things you never knew were connected. If a genius is someone who sees connections between things that others do not, it will spark the genius within you. However from the cut marks made into the stone it is believed to be of some form of copper alloy pick, axe or maul which were common tools used in the Old Kingdom. However granite probably would not have been cut using these tools because they would not last long enough for the amount of cutting that was accomplished. Even how Egyptians were able to cut blocks from these quarries has caused dispute amongst many archaeologists. There aren’t any remnants of any construction equipment used to for cutting the blocks. Again guesses have to be made from marks left on the stone as well as the tomb-scenes. (Shaw, 2011). Within the sub level of the pyramid on the walls there are a couple original faience tiles and depicted scenes of the king running the ritual race that renewed his heb-sed festival that still remain. This was celebrated as an accomplishment of the king’s completed tasks that were expected of him from the gods. In tunnels it is common to see their ceilings decorated with stars. An interesting block that was found underneath the pyramid is a serekh, which is a motif shaped like a palace building enclosing the name of the king. They created a crown out of a thorn bush and forced it onto his head, piercing his scalp and forehead. As the final stage of his punishment, Jesus was nailed to the cross through his wrists and feet. After he died, a Roman soldier pierced Jesus’ side with a spear in an upward thrust toward his heart. After taking him down from the cross, he was wrapped in a linen sheet and his body placed in a tomb. The linen cloth that enveloped him has graphically recorded the gruesome details of his chastisement. The linen cloth that Jesus was wrapped in is now known as the Shroud of Turin. Even though those who believe it is a medieval fake have challenged its authenticity, the Shroud’s history, weave pattern, pollen record, bioplastic coating, bloodstains, and uniqueness all testify to its authenticity. After the crucifixion, Jesus was first laid on the cloth and then it was wrapped over his head and down to his feet completely enshrouding his body. I ought to be gratified by this change; but if I was unwilling previously to attribute the neglect of my work to its small value, I cannot take the interest which is now making its appearance as proof of its quality. The advance of scientific knowledge has not left The Interpretation of Dreams untouched. When I wrote this book in 1899 there was as yet no "sexual theory," and the analysis of the more complicated forms of the psychoneuroses was still in its infancy. The interpretation of dreams was intended as an expedient to facilitate the psychological analysis of the neuroses; but since then a profounder understanding of the neuroses has contributed towards the comprehension of the dream. The doctrine of dream-interpretation itself has evolved in a direction which was insufficiently emphasized in the first edition of this book. From my own experience, and the works of Stekel and other writers, [1] I have since learned to appreciate more accurately the significance of symbolism in dreams (or rather, in unconscious thought).
