Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper analyzing the components of the psychoanalytic approach to personality. Your paper should cover the following areas: • Compare and contrast the psychoanalytic theories of Freud, Jung, and Adler. What are two characteristics of these theories with which you agree? What are two characteristics with which you disagree? • Describe the stages of Freud’s theory and explain characteristics of personality using these components. • Describe uses of at least three Freudian defense mechanisms with real-life examples. • Psychologists have broken down the human personality into five distinct categories; neuroticism, extraversion, openness, conscientiousness and agreeableness. The acronyms used to refer to these personality traits are "CANOE, OCEAN and NEOAC." Each personality has visible traits which sets them apart from each other. The characteristics of individuals are what make them unique and special. This is why there are no two people that are exactly the same. Although, some people do share some of the same characteristics, it does not mean that they share the same personality. This is often referred to as idiosyncrasy. Idiosyncrasy describes the unique mannerism, or behavioral that an individual displays. It is more like their personal "signature", because they are recognized or identified by the one special behavior or mannerism they display. • Friedman,Howard S. and Schustack, Miriam W.; Trait Aspects of Personality: Identity Personality. Classic Theories and Modern Research, Fifth Edition, ( 2011) Chapter 8

Sigmund Freud was the main proponent of Psychoanalytic Theory but neo-Freudians such as Jung, Adler, Erikson and Horney are also major contributors. Freud believed that every personality has an unconscious component and that childhood experiences, even if not consciously recalled, continue to

...become successful and have a strong will in their life. Character Trait Research Character traits can easily be observed through actions or responses to a situation or even how a person acts around you or others. It can be defined as strong, Humorous, kind, or else. For this character trait research, I chose strong/strength as a character trait. The definition of strong/strength is that the quality or state of being physically and mentally strong. Person can be strong at the ability to resist being moved or broken by a force or the person can be strong the quality that allows someone to deal with problems in a determined and effective way. Getting the strong as solid character trait requires a lot of mind control. Usually when people sees the person who has a strong characteristic or trait either physically or mentally, they want this person to be strong all the time or at least believe that they are strong no matter what happens. For example who is strong as mentally, if something urgent situation occurs this person can solve the situation and find the way through out. And people sees this and expect this person to be strong at this type of situation. So staying strong all the time requires mind control saying that I am good at this or I am strong on this so this person can stay positive and strong all the time. I believe this is one of the hardship or negative aspect of keeping the solid character trait because humans have feelings and their own thought and it is...

Personality Traits

...Personality Traits Roselynne S. Parker ECE341: Social & Emotional Growth of Infants & Toddlers (LCU1304A) Instructor:  Nancy Brown February 2, 2013 Children are born with specific personalities that are visible in their newborn state. Understanding these trait differences provides caregivers and teachers information to cultivate appropriate activities in a group environment. There are nine personality traits of note in humans: activity levels; biological rhythms; approach or withdrawal; adaptability; quality of mood; intensity of reactions; sensitivity threshold; distractibility; persistence/attention span, (Chess, 1990). Each trait delivers positivism and challenges which must be considered to avoid labeling a child as bad or good. A caregiver’s/teacher’s observation and goodness of fit is the best way to approach a child’s temperament, an offshoot of the aforementioned personality traits, (Hearron, Hildebrand, 2009). By avoiding areas for a child’s troublesome traits does not provide the child an opportunity to master new skills, insulating them from their inner ability to attain self-confidence and self-worth, (Chess, 1990). The first trait, activity level, is a determinable feature for a caregiver to adapt their interactions to maximize the child’s development, (Chess, 1990). The child may be hyperactive, or slow to get started. A quiet and reserved child may prefer long periods of sitting and listening to stories or coloring. Long periods...

Character traits (e.g. miserliness, pedantry and intolerance) get together to an orientation and are part of the basic orientation of the character. (http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Character+traits) According to Laua King’s The Science of Psychology “trait theories are theoretical views stressing that personality consists of broad, enduring dispositions (traits) that tend to lead to characteristic response. She also defines the “big five factors of personality as the broad traits that are thought to describe the main dimensions of personality.” She gives an acronym; “OCEAN. Openness; imaginative and practical; Conscientiousness; organized or disorganized, Extraversion; energetic or somber, Agreeableness; trusting or suspicious, and Neuroticism; calm or anxious.” As we can see, King’s examples for her acronym are complete opposites of each other. These are the different range of emotions that one can show during each of these stages. I see character traits as being the building blocks of one’s personality. The way one has developed their speech, style, eating habits, peer groups, and core values. I have been told that I am bossy, independent, unorganized, and scatter brained. I obviously have pick up these traits at different points of my life. Yes, most of them I did retain from my mother...

Personality Traits

...Personality is a set of traits and characteristics that relate to a person's emotions, motivations, interpersonal interactions, and attitudes. Personality is different from ability. Personality is meaningful to management, because employees' personalities may dictate how well they perform their jobs. Personality may indicate how hard a person will work, how organized they are, how well they will interact with others, and how creative they are. Personality is a trait. That is, personality is enduring and unlikely to change substantially in one's adult life. Because personality is a trait, this also means that a person is likely to behave similarly in a variety of situations. This does not mean that a person cannot or will not adapt to a change in circumstances, but that, on average, a person demonstrates similar personality across all situations and may behave differently from those with dissimilar personality characteristics. In recent years, more organizations have been using self-reporting personality tests to identify personality traits as part of their hiring or management development processes. Employers recognize that experience, education, and intelligence may not be the only indicators of who the best hire might be. Additionally, understanding one's own personality characteristics may improve one's ability to develop as an employee and manager. Therefore, it is important to understand the different facets of personality and the ways in which they can be measured. There...

...FOUR (4) leadership traits or personal characteristics Traits are distinguishing personal characteristics of a leader, such as self-confidence (personality), intelligence (intelligence and ability), cognitive ability (intelligence and ability) and achievement drive (work-related characteristics). Many of leaders’ dispositions are influenced by the traits that they possessed at birth. They can acquire certain traits from the environment they live in. Tommy had self-confidence and believes on his decisions to overcome problems. Tommy also has emotional stability during meeting. 2. Cognitive ability This is mental abilities and knowledge. Some cognitive skills are insight into people and situation, farsightedness and conceptual thinking. Trait Theorities of Personality

...Trait Theories of Personality Accordingly, to Psychologist Gordon Allport (1897-1967) developed the Traits Theory in which he believed that personality is a combination of characteristics and qualities. These traits are influenced by the societal experiences lived throughout the course of life he stressed on the concept of self-distinctiveness and unique of each individual. Allport emphasized the interaction of personality with the societal influences and circumstances (Samuel & Ellen Green Wood, 1997, p450). Allport’s theory of traits stresses the differences between the individuals. Gordon Allport theorized that traits are of three types: cardinal, central, and secondary traits. The cardinal traits are persistent, shape the individual’s behavior and attitude, and therefore determine his /her personality. Central traits are general traits that are common in so many people. Secondary traits are less pervasive, and ineffective in shaping the personality. However, they are seeing in certain circumstances. In another hands, the psychologist Hans Eysenk proposed that personality traits are of three types: antisocial, introversion-extroversion and emotionally stable. Meanwhile, the psychologist Lewis Goldberg developed a new theory in which he proposed a five-dimension personality model known as the Big Five. The Big Five theory includes the important and crucial traits of the personality. Openness to experience, versus Reticence. Conscientiousness versus...

This trait theory has five other traits that are “known as the Big Five.” (allpsych.com) They are: 1) Openness to experience, 2) Conscientiousness, 3) Extroversion/Introversion, 4) Agreeableness, and 5) Neuroticism. This also makes an acronym of the word OCEAN and they are considered the basic traits that underlie the trait personality. Each on has its own definition of what it means and how it shows through someone’s personality. Openness to experience means to be outgoing, interested in whatever is new around them, having an open imagination, and liberal. Conscientiousness means to be organized, weak willed, determined to be careless, and even careful as well. Extroversion speaks of a person who would rather be with groups of people such as around many of their friends rather than staying home alone and hanging out. They are the type that would much rather go out and have a good time with friends and family. Agreeableness shows the extreme suborn against the very easy going type of person. These types of people are very sympathetic, helpful and even more understanding than others. Last but not least is neuroticism.
