...Case study 1 (M1) Mrs H. After reading Mrs H’s case study I was shocked, I was shocked to learn that she was given no choice in her personal care. Mrs H was moved to an intermediate care centre for treatment after a fall at home, after her treatment she was then admitted to the Elderly Care Assessment Unit of Birmingham Heartlands confused of what was going on around her, Mrs H wasn’t aware where she was getting transferred to or what care procedures has been put in place for her. Whenever Mrs H was in the hospital she had many falls and during one of the falls she broke her collar bone, her niece holds power of attorney for her and is also her only relative and because of this her niece should have been informed of Mrs H’s fall and her injuries that she sustained during this, but her niece received no information of any of the falls never mind her breaking her collar bone. This could make Mrs H less confident in the people around her such as doctors and nurses, she may lose trust towards them and not want to ask them to lift her in case she was to fall again, so in result of this this could lead Mrs H to urinating herself by not making it to the toilet. As Mrs H was given no choice in her personal care this would make her feel disempowered because before her fall at home she was a very independent woman whose appearance was important to her, this could result in Mrs H isolating herself. Mrs H was in no way treated and valued as an individual, during Mrs H journey home she was...

...Does your child need a tutor? Needing a tutor for your child or teen is not uncommon or a bad thing. Sometimes concepts are just too hard for kids to grasp or maybe your child is preparing for harder material and college prep and needs a hand. With extra help, your child can gain the confidence to get better grades, boost their self-esteem and overall achieve higher goals. Here are some signs that your child may need a tutor: * Grades are steadily or rapidly declining * Not doing homework and making excuses to why it is not getting done * Misbehavior in class * Anxiety over tests and exams * Lower self-esteem * Working hard to complete homework however still receiving sub-average grades * Easily distracted while doing homework * Prepping for SAT or other college exams * Doesn’t see the point in school if they are not doing well * Uses phrases such as “I’m stupid” or “I’m never going to do better” What to do before you hire a tutor for the first time Before hiring a tutor, like any other type of service, a bit of research should go into it. Check out their profile and credentials to ensure that they match what you are looking for. Don’t be afraid to ask questions as well, tutors are there to help and teach you or your child so it is perfectly acceptable and appropriate to spark up a quick conversation prior to engaging in any form of agreements. Also, don’t be afraid to ask to see credentials or their plan for the tutoring session. ...

...Two Worlds Collide: The WC and Ms. Davis’ Comp II Class On May 29th I had the pleasure of visiting Ms. Lindsey Davis’ Composition II class to introduce our new Writing Center on South Campus (lovingly referred to as The WC by us tutors). New to the TCC community, I was thrilled to see the professional yet friendly environment she created in her classroom. As I lingered anxiously outside the door, I was put at ease as Ms. Davis joked good-naturedly with her students about course content. And that’s when I wanted to make a grand entrance like a hyped-up-five-year-old complete with cartwheels – POETRY! How could she have known? So my formal WC presentation turned into a genuine moment of connection between myself, Ms. Davis, and her clever, funny and engaging students. I am a voracious reader of poetry in all its contemporary forms, including all things hip-hop (and, yes, rap is poetry people)! I cannot wait to read their papers and get to know them better as they write for Ms. Davis. I left feeling energized about my role as tutor largely because of the positive environment they all had created. Good information, poetry and laughter. What a way to start the day! Even more exciting, as I wandered around campus after, her students recognized me and called me by name – awesome sauce – and brought up some good questions I can better answer now: Can you help me with my grammar? Funny you should ask! We will have our first annual Proofreading Workshop on June 18th at 1:30 p.m. in...

...School Diploma Program to help the youth get their GED and go on to college, tutoring services, youth development that helps build leadership, cultural enrichment, computer training and life skills workshops. The facility stimulates the work environment and offer training sessions that can help the youth be work ready for the “real” life work environments. During my experience with this program, I was an English and Math tutor and also did some office work here and there. These kids came from diverse cultural backgrounds. Most of them were local and part-Hawaiian kids and the rest were from Micronesia. All of these youths came from a broken home and some were fugitives on drugs that wanted to change their lives. Many of the youths hated their parents because they felt like alcohol, boyfriends, girlfriends, and drugs are more important than their own children. Some youth came from the streets and no homes, while there were a few who dropped out of school because they were pregnant. This program directly relates to my Cross-Cultural Psychology class because in chapter five, Development and Socialization, I found that kids learn a lot through education and socialization put together. They all came from a diverse cultural background but as the time they spent with one another learning and becoming better people, they all seemed to acquire one uniquely special culture of their own. When they first...

...87 .,~. Peer Tutoring and the "Conversation of Mankind" by Kenneth A. Bruffee The beginnings of peer tutoring lie in practice, not in theory. A decade or so ago, faculty and administrators in a few institutions around the country became aware that, increasingly, students entering college had difficulty doing as well in academic studies as their abilities suggested they should be able to do. Some of these students were in many ways poorly prepared academically. Many more of them, however, had on paper excellent secondary preparation. The common denominator among the poorly prepared and the apparently well prepared seemed to be that, for cultural reasons we may not yet fully under stand, all these students had difficulty adapting to the traditional or "normal" conventions of the college classroom. One symptom of the difficulty was that many of these students refuSed .help when it was offered. Mainly, colleges offered ancillary programs staffed by professionals. Students avoided them in droves. Many solutions to this problem were suggested and tried, from mandated programs to sink-or-swim. One idea that seemed at the time among the most exotic and unlikely (that is, in the jargon of the Sixties, among the most "radical") turned out to work rather well. Some of us had guessed that students were refusing the help we were providing because it seemed to them merely an extension of the work, the expectations, and above all the social structure of traditional classroom learning. And...

Describe how knowledge about online resources or database searching will help in your future studies and career? To begin with, online resources or data base searching has been a tremendous and effective contributing factor towards the fast and easy researching method my colleagues, myself and other learning colleagues are using widely in the twenty-first century. Fortunately, online resources have created essential communication skills between me and my colleagues, tutors and other acquaintances around the universe. This method has enabled me interact via online through discussing and exchanging learning information. However, the effect has not only made it easy for the general public and myself to access accurate and non-accurate information, but has also contributed in developing and improving social development/network. Most importantly, it has given me the privilege to search more than one database to enable obtaining a successful research project. Furthermore, the aspect of locating the right source is an enormous issue. Example is researching using Google and Google scholar. The difference is that, Google scholar is peer-reviewed but Google is not. Based on this evidence, not all information is academically evaluated or peer-reviewed before it is made...

...their own teachers, either way of tuitions or coaching. The candidates preparing for different competitive examinations are lured by different coaching institutions. The main aim of these coaching institutions is to earn maximum profit and they do not care to educate the candidates to acquire detailed knowledge of subjects. These institutes only prepare the candidates keeping in view the fourth coming examinations. PRIVATE TUTIONS: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Parents are worried that their children are unable to cope with school work. As such, they hire private tutors to coach them or send them to tuition centers for extra lessons. Private tuitions can be advantageous. Sometimes students are unable to concentrate during lessons for various reasons, such as distractions, not feeling well or explanation gaps. Therefore, students miss key points taught during lessons. Under such circumstances, private tutors can re-explain the topics learnt, reiterate key points, abstract concept and help to solve problems that students face. Students can be lazy at times. They may lose their motivation to work hard. The temptation for students to play is strong, particularly playing and surfing internet, spending time watching TV,...

Every student should be able to use this program to enhance their college experience. When most students where asked about the Tutoring Center, they didn’t know what it was or what it offered. Upon further investigation of the campus tutoring center, I learned the tutoring center can help with any subject including accounting, business, CADD, computer science, ESL, foreign languages, humanities, math, science, social science, writing (any subject), and any other subjects upon request.
