Introduction
Twitter is a social network and real-time communication service launched in 2006 and used by millions of people and organizations to quickly share and discover information. The word Twitter comes from the frequent chirping sound made by birds, hence the bird used in the Twitter logo. Users can access the site via the web and mobile devices to exchange frequent bite-size updates of information called 'tweets' which are messages of up to 140 characters long that anyone can send or read. These messages or tweets are public by default and visible to all those who are following the tweeter.
Twitter originally started off as a Podcasting company called Odeo before pivoting into the microblogging service we know and love today.
From a business and marketing perspective, Twitter helps you develop and promote your brand, interact with your customers and prospects, track what people are saying about your company and develop direct relationships with bloggers, journalists and industry leaders and it provides a search engine that allows you plug-in company names, brand names, topics and even personal names. Although Facebook has a larger social media presence and more users, Twitter gives businesses more clicks.
Also it is a tool for "micro-blogging" or posting very short updates, comments or thoughts. In fact, since Twitter was designed to be very compatible with mobile phones through text messages, each update is limited to 140 characters. Truly, a micro-blog. Another way to think of Twitter is like a cross between instant messaging (IM) and a chat room, because it is an open forum, but you restrict it to the people with which you connect.

Email Marketing

...creating ads, monitoring your mentions, replying to wall posts, etc. Now, take a moment to think about the time you spend on email marketing – growing your list, crafting great email content, and looking at analytics on your list growth and engagement. If you find you’re spending a majority of your time on social media, and little to no time on your email list, it could be a potentially tragic mistake that could be costing you sales. Here’s why. Just the stats: users, open rates, and click through rates. With Facebook boasting over 1 billion active users per month and Twitter boasting 255 million, we certainly couldn’t blame you for being persuaded to focus a large portion of your marketing efforts on social media. But what you don’t see so frequently touted are the statistics on email usage. According to Radicati, the total number of worldwide email accounts was 3.9 billion in 2013, and projected to be 4.9 billion by 2017. To put this in perspective for you, there are 3x more email accounts than there are Facebook & Twitter accounts combined. From a marketing perspective though, it’s the statistics on reach and engagement that show the real story. Did you know that organic reach on Facebook (I.e. the number of your fans who actually see your posts in their Newsfeed) is only 6%? On the contrary, open rates for email marketing messages are generally in the 20 – 30% range, meaning your message is 5x more likely to be seen through email than Facebook. Similarly...

Twitter - a Good Customer Service Story

...Adam Kirby The Greatest Twitter Hotel Service Story Yet December 17, 2009 When a guest tweets a complaint about his or her stay at your hotel, do you ever see it? Do you try getting in touch with the person to apologize? That’s all well and good, but Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts has set the bar for social media customer service quite a bit higher than that. When a guest at Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore went on Twitter last month to make a lighthearted complaint about the hotel’s turndown music (”Okay, the turndown music in my room at Four Seasons Biltmore is so not soothing. More appropriate for a funeral or beheading.”), she wasn’t expecting anything to come from it. So imagine her surprise when she returned to her guestroom the next day to find a bottle of wine and a note from the general manager apologizing for the substandard tunes-along with a listing of local radio stations. Turns out the Toronto-based corporate interactive marketing team behind @FourSeasons saw the tweet and took the time to notify the California resort about the problem. Making the story all the more impressive is that the guest is not identified by name on her Twitter account, meaning the Four Seasons folks had to do a bit of sleuthing to figure out who she was en route to rectifying what was at most a minor nuisance. (Read the first-person account at HotelChatter.) I talked with Cherry Kam, Four Seasons’ director of interactive marketing, about the incident. In keeping with the hotel company’s...

Apple's Social Media Marketing Campaign

...Apple’s Social Media Marketing Campaign Apple’s Social Media Marketing Purpose The purpose of Apple’s social media marketing campaign is to drive discussion around new products and to generate new product ideas and concepts for its consumers. Apple has long been a leader within its technology markets and requires expedited access to consumer reviews and comments about its products. A successful social media campaign will consist of many users discussing products and hearsay about potential products. In the past Apple has left much of its social media conversations solely in the hands of its consumers. Essentially, its strategy was to create a social buzz by staying completely silent, instead letting the rumour mill do the PR work instead (Moth, 2012). Moving forward the company will be more active in its social media in an effort to bridge the gap between consumer and company. Apple’s Target Audience Apple’s target audience is 25+ and more specifically between 25 and 45 years of age. Furthermore, Apple will primarily focus on middle to upper income individuals or families with disposable income. Apple’s brand will focus on people with musical, graphical and artistic and travel interests as well as those who are active, exploratory, avant-garde and early technology adopters (MetaFacts Inc., 2012). The company is known to create a sleeker more upscale technological product. The firm seeks to create more than a culture of singular consumers but rather a community...
