SPCH 61 9:00 – 10:30 TTH 12/10/2015 Solitude is not the absence of Love Without solitude, Love will not stay long by your side. Because Love needs to rest as well, so that it can journey through the heavens and reveal itself in other forms. Without solitude, no plant or animal can survive, no soil can remain productive for any length of time, no child can learn about life, no artist can create, no work can grow and be transformed. Solitude is not the absence of Love, but its complement. Solitude is not the absence of company, but the moment when our soul is free to speak to us and help us decide what to do with our life. ...Validating the Use of the Evaluation Tool of Children’s Handwriting–Manuscript to Identify Handwriting Difficulties and Detect Change in School-Age Children Marie Brossard-Racine, Barbara Mazer, Marilyse Julien, Annette Majnemer KEY WORDS discriminant analysis handwriting occupational therapy child validation studies In this study we sought to validate the discriminant ability of the Evaluation Tool of Children’s Handwriting– Manuscript in identifying children in Grades 2–3 with handwriting difficulties and to determine the percentage of change in handwriting scores that is consistently detected by occupational therapists. Thirty-four therapists judged and compared 35 pairs of handwriting samples. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were performed to determine (1) the optimal cutoff values for word and letter legibility scores that identify children with handwriting difficulties who should be seen in rehabilitation and (2) the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) in handwriting scores. Cutoff scores of 75.0% for total word legibility and 76.0% for total letter legibility were found to provide excellent levels of accuracy. A difference of 10.0%–12.5% for total word legibility and 6.0%–7.0% for total letter legibility were found as the MCID. Study findings enable therapists to quantitatively support clinical judgment when evaluating handwriting. Brossard-Racine, M., Mazer, B., Julien, M., & Majnemer, A. (2012). Validating the use of...

...screamed Jane. 2. To emphasize a point: My mother-in-law's rants make me furious ! Comma, Semicolon and Colon The comma, semicolon and colon are often misused because they all can indicate a pause in a series. The comma is used to show a separation of ideas or elements within the structure of a sentence. Additionally, it is used in letter writing after the salutation and closing. •  Separating elements within sentences: Suzi wanted the black , green , and blue shoes. •  Letter Salutations: Dear Uncle John , •  Separation of two complete sentences: We went to the movies , and we went to the beach. The semicolon (;) is used to connect independent clauses. It shows a closer relationship between the clauses than a period would show. For example: John was hurt ; he knew she only said it to upset him. A colon (:) has two main uses: * The first is after a word introducing a quotation, an explanation, an example, or a series. It is also often used after the salutation of a business letter. * The second is within time expressions. Within time, it is used to separate out the hour and minute: 12 : 15 p.m. Dash and the Hyphen Two kinds of dashes are used throughout written communications. They are the endash and the emdash. An endash is a symbol (-) that is used in writing or printing to connect numbers or to...

Visual Phonics Intervention Study

...Phonics instruction teaches children how to connect the sounds of spoken English with letters or groups of letters. Emergent readers need to understand that there is a relationship between letter patterns and sound patterns, which will eventually help them develop the knowledge of separate sounds in words. Phonics has been identified by the National Reading Panel as one of the five areas necessary for reading (Doty, Hixson, Decker, Reynolds, & Drevon 2015). It is widely used in teaching children to read and decode words. Phonics instruction is usually taught to children around the ages of five and six (Yusuf & Enesi 2012). Phonemic Awareness vs. Phonics

...these skills and strategies, and the purpose of both will be explained. Different assessment options will also be discussed. Introduction Children begin learning sounds and words from the time they are born. They are even exposed to hearing their mother’s voice while still in the womb. It is important that children are exposed to letters and words at an early age as well as have books read to them. These are factors in learning how to read. Two of the most important elements that emerging readers need to know in order to successfully read are phonemic awareness and phonics. These two concepts are different, but must work as a team for one to read. In the beginning grades, teachers must concentrate greatly on both of these concepts to make sure that the students have the foundation that is needed in order to begin reading. In this paper, definitions of both phonemic awareness and phonics will be shared along with strategies that can be explicitly taught to assist in learning how to read. The sequence of developmental stages, the appropriate ages for both concepts, and the purpose for using them will also be highlighted. Last, assessments examples that can be used will complete the paper. Phonemic Awareness Phonemic awareness can be described as the concentration of oral speech. Letter sounds can be manipulated through speaking. Phonemic awareness is the foundation for phonics and spelling (Gail Tompkins, 2014). When...
