...The article “Gender, Pay and Work Satisfaction at a UK University” by Maria Smith is an exhaustive quantitative study of a particular state employer. The paper analyzes the facts and figures on salary and examines results from a staff satisfaction survey held at a UK University (University A) and discusses the ‘paradox of the contended female worker’. This paradox states that although women earn less than men, their satisfaction with the payment seems to be higher than in the men’s case – despite of disadvantages such as job security and content, promotion opportunities and sexual harassment (Crosby, 1982). Also, the author explains that these gaps vary from institution to institution. The purpose of the article is to contribute to the small amount of the existing job satisfaction research for men and women working at higher education institutions. The study described in the paper focuses on the satisfaction levels of two groups of University A staff – the administrative and academic teaching staff. Despite all efforts in the past, gender pay gap has persisted to the present time and takes place even at higher education institutions in the UK, where a clear agenda on pay equality, as negotiated by various organizations and unions, should exist (Smith, 2008, p. 622). Still, studies show the existence of pay gaps between genders and conclude that women have less promotion opportunities and a lower chance to earn as much as their equally ranked male colleagues (Blackaby et al...

...Secretaries of Sweet water University SUMMARY OF THE CASE: This case study is about the newly appointed vice president, Rob Winchester and about the difficulties he faced shortly after his university career began .Rob's boss, Sweetwater's president assigned him the first task of improving the performance appraisal system used to evaluate secretarial and clerical performance. In this case, the main difficulty is the performance appraisal which was directly tied to salary increases given at the end of the year. The graphic rating forms which were used to evaluate clerical staff were not efficient as these forms never gave the true evaluation of performance. So, to change the faulty performance appraisal system two Sweetwater experts gave their recommendations to solve the problem. The first recommendation was not to use graphic rating forms as this rating method did not provide any clear picture about the good or bad performance. The second recommendation was not to force administrators to arbitrarily rate at least half their secretaries as something less than excellent. The recommendations given by the experts were good and made sense but these recommendations created problems like efficacy of any graphic rating forms if it is compared to the original forced ranking approach used by Rob and what should be the basis of performance appraisal. ANALYSIS OF THE CASE: The job of Rob Winchester was to completely change the performance rating system of the university because the previous...

...My most relevant learning experience of the work life balance workshop There has not much time elapsed since we started to get the first impressions about business life and the way to be successful in it but it’s already quite apparent that there is no option than hard work if you want to make it to the top. It is required that students act very responsible with their time and manage to fit it all in. As one consequence of this, people often tend to neglect spending time with family and friends because they’re strongly focused on their success in business later on. When the pressure leading from exams, presentations or studying itself gets too high it might be dangerous not to recognize some warning signals of the own mind and body. To avoid this but to be successful either way there are some strategies which we were introduced to during the different presentations of the Work-Life-Balance workshop. The presentation I liked most was the one of Jasmin Nordiek with the topic „Cope with stress“ because it was great to get an insight into somebody’s personal experience and the development of her way of thinking. She started her career with the same goal as many others: gaining a leading position in a big enterprise. She climbed up the career ladder successfully and finally her mission was accomplished. She was where most of the students at this university hope to be someday - in a leading position and enjoying all of the comforts it was bringing with it. After a while this wasn’t...

There is an example to protrude the social information processing model: Doherty and Cantu got law degrees from the same university and were hired by the same law firm. They work in different department and report to different partners. Their working situations and outcomes are similar. However, their reactions to the job are different. Doherty feels that he is so lucky he got this interesting and challenging work and he has the high salary makes it better; but Cantu dissatisfy this job because he must spent half of the working time doing assignments for the partners, and hates he does not have the chances to do work for the customer, his high salary is based on the long working hours.
