...Comparison between the UNIX and the Windows 2008 servers Instructor Keating ECPI University CIS305 Advanced UNIX Administration June 15, 2013 There are many reasons that I choose this speaking about the UNIX server verses the Window 2008 server but mainly it was the fact that I had no idea how this server worked and why it was so important. At first when I heard of UNIX it didn’t seem important at all in fact all I could remember is that it was the server that carried the weird names. Then I learned that this was the Linux server they both seemed similar. What interested me is the fact that this was something that I didn’t understand therefore it became a challenge it was the server that I wanted to learn about, the inner working since I loved learning about new things. Now I was very frustrated at first, but in the process of learning I have found and downloaded the operating system on my desktop so that I can learn to be familiar with it. I will give you a little bio as to when I began to show an interest in computer I never had any experiences with server this is my first experience, but with computers that is a different story this is one of the things that I love working with and fixing. Memory Management in MAC OS is a multi-core and multi-processor execution that is supported and a programming API, which is called grand central dispatch. It is in the MAC OS. It provides a pool of available threads. There are ways to prevent memory related problems; Freeing data that is still in use, this can cause memory corruption that can result in your application crashing or worse corrupted user data. Windows memory management system is both physical and has virtual memory. It is a known fact that Windows can be very prone to virus infections, but since there are so little Mac viruses, people like to get it in their heads that it isn’t possible. Mac OS X is built on the UNIX kernel, one of the most secure operating systems. UNIX creates a file system in which the user isn’t the most powerful role on the computer and needs root permission to really make any major changes. It is technically more secure, but the only other real benefit is that Apple doesn’t populate a large percentage of the PC marketplace. Apple used to encourage this way of thinking, but after the Flashback virus (Perlroth, 2012), they decided it wasn’t a good idea to lie to their customers. Apple replaced their “Why you’ll love a Mac” website containing “It doesn’t get PC viruses” to “It’s built to be safe” (Mlot, 2012). Since malware really only exploits existing bugs or holes in an operating system, it is up to Apple to fix those holes, and they do a pretty good job of it. There is no per-process memory protection. Application code runs in supervisor mode, so there is no instruction protection. The original problem for the engineers of the Macintosh was how to make optimum use of the 128 KB of RAM that the machine was equipped with. Since at that time the machine could only run one application program at a time, and there was no fixed secondary storage, the engineers implemented a simple scheme which worked well with those particular constraints.
