In the article, Queer Cyborgs and New Mutants: Race, Sexuality, and Prosthetic Sociality in Digital Space, Mimi Nguyen analyzes the dialectic relationship between organic bodies and technologies in society by conducting an intersectional analysis. Specifically, Nguyen utilizes a narrative about Karma, a mutant who was a Vietnamese war refugee with the ability to “seize control of other peoples mind and bodies” (Nguyen 38). Nguyen, also of Vietnamese descent, use this first-personal narrative to not only relate herself to Karma, but to also humanize the subject at hand.
Nguyen exhorts that being a cyborg or mutant is considered to be the ‘other’ in society. She claims that al though these mutants were brought together to fight evil mutants, these “New Mutants are nonetheless viewed with fear and suspicion by the non-mutant population” (Nguyen 374). These cyborgs and mutants are characterized as outsiders because their bodies are subjected to specific stereotypes that do not fit in the overwhelmingly “normal” society. Nguyen continues to say, “in these science fictions mutant bodies and cyborg bodies are analogized as minoritarian bodies, subjected and subjugated…” (377). Relating back to class discussion, these bodies are actually constructing the space around them. Since these mutants are so different and are being put in a space where they are considered to be the “other,” a majority believes it is there duty to remove them from that space. Even with their unique powers and experiences, they are considered to be the inferior class, and unfortunately in Karmas case, “her genetic mutation does now allow [her] unusual access to freedoms” (Nguyen 374). In Karmas world, being unique does not justify any extra freedoms. To be accepted, you have to adapt. This recurring idea of outcasts in popular culture emphasizes the unified narratives and subjectivities the majority always has over the minority. Our class discussion about immigrants relates to the situation Karma is in because they are forced to either accommodate or assimilate to the popular culture. Some would argue that these cyborgs and mutants are protecting the regular humans, but their differences far outweigh their unique abilities in the eyes of the majority. In his article, The Tyranny of The Melting Pot Metaphor: Wonder Woman as an Americanized Immigrant, Matthew Smith argues that “in the process of mixing, immigrants find that as their culture melts away, it is replaced by an unaffected "American" culture…” (Smith 129). Karma in this situation would be considered an immigrant into this “normal society” and is forced to “pass for human or risk being the object of fear and hostility” (Nguyen 374). In the series Astonishing X-Men, Joss Whedon utilizes the mutants in X-Men to display the dialectic between these mutants and normal society. The mutants in X-men are considered to be these outsiders whose home is secluded to a school separate from regular people. This specific series reveals that a cure has been made to eradicate the “mutant disease,” which causes a multitude of reactions from different mutants. Just as Karma was treated in Nguyen’s article, the X-Men mutants are considered to be minoritarian bodies that are occupying a space, which many believe, they do not belong in. The regular people in society are afraid of their unique abilities, and since they are unable to accept it, they simply wish to eradicate the problem in its entirety. Wheadon’s argument through these comic books is to display the ongoing tension not only amongst regular humans and mutants, but also between mutants themselves. The mere fact that these mutant bodies are portrayed to be in an outsiders space makes them believe they have to adapt into society rather than just be themselves. This constant pressure of adapting is why many mutants are so willing to try the cure because they rather just feel welcome into their space, and not have to feel like they need to fight for it. This construction of our self-identity is based on the space that our bodies occupy. For instance, as students in a classroom, we act and behave very differently in a classroom then we do outside a classroom. Specific spaces request specific etiquette, however mutants are unable to find the balance because of their fundamental differences from the rest of society.

Engaging Patients with User-Friendly Data

...Engaging Patients with User-Friendly Data By John Rother, Executive Vice President for Policy and Strategy, AARP Patients who are informed and involved play a vital role in health care delivery. In order to increase awareness among patients it is important that providers are willing to be somewhat transparent in terms of quality and cost. In reality very few patients use available information on quality and cost which could help them become smarter consumers. Insurance companies and providers have been quick to make improvements and make most decisions for patients. Hospitals have responded well when there have been reports of problems with care. For consumers to be more involved they have to be given specific information at the point of care that has meaning for them. This translates to information that is easy to understand and specific to the current diagnosis. Data should be risk assessed when appropriate, should be user friendly and standardized so any number of providers could easily compare them. While consumers largely go by a hospital’s reputation for making decisions, some may be interested in specific clinical data pertaining physician responses in an emergency situation etc. . Some patients are unable to take advantage of relevant available information. They could be stressed and vulnerable and not have time to research providers or compare data. Not all patients are capable of participating in the complex decision making with...

Critical Theory Today: A User-Friendly Guide

...When we watch a movie, listen to a song, or read a book, we try to determine their principal meaning. Therefore; we make our own assumptions as to what they mean. We place ourselves in the literary text and interpret it in our own way. In her book, Critical Theory Today: A User-Friendly Guide, Tyson calls this, “reading against the grain.” Meaning we see something that the author did not intend (Tyson 7). This concept is part of Critical Theory, a type of social theory toward critiquing and changing society as a whole. As Tyson puts it, “Change the lens and you change both the view and the viewer” (9). In contrast, we ask the questions of literary arts of work, "Why they would say that line in a song?” or “Why are the characters in the book or movie behaving that way?” When we ask these questions we are performing psychoanalytic criticism. We are...

The Power of First Impressions

...amygdala also controls fear and alerts us to possible danger, it is easy to see how fast a first impression can come. If you are walking on the path in a forest and see something that could be a snake, the lightning like fight or flight response you get comes from the amygdala assessing the threat. This is the same part of the brain that creates first impressions, so you can see how quickly they are made. When I picture John after reading the first scenario, I see a confident, friendly person who eagerly talks to many people throughout his day. I see a man who knows who he is as a person and is very likeable. The scenario seems to show him as a very likeable individual who is very full of life and outgoing. I can almost see him smiling as he walks around, just enjoying being alive. When I picture John after reading the second scenario, I see a very different person. I see someone who walks slouched over and doesn’t engage in friendly repartee with anyone. He doesn’t appear to be as friendly. I wouldn’t say that I see him as unfriendly, maybe just withdrawn. Perhaps I read too much into it, but it seems to me as if the second John is not someone that...

House of 1000 Mirrors

...House of 1000 Mirrors Long ago in a small, far away village, there was place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog came to know of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the House, he thought to himself, "This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often." In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, "That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again." All the faces in the world are mirrors. Just observe what kind of reflections do you see in the faces of the people you meet. Life is actually a reflection of our thoughts and...

Sustainable Fashion

...idea is to care for the place where we humans live. Green is now everywhere. When you go to the market to buy groceries you can find that there is sustainable packaging that will integrate to the planet after its use. Now people take their own cloth bags to carry the products that they purchase so they don’t use plastic bags. This has become a fashion as well. To be more environmental friendly, why not use sustainable clothes? Clothes are one of the major necessities that a human may have. People can look fashionable, in style, and support the planet at the same time. The nonprofit Sustainable Technology Education Project (STEP) defines eco-fashions as clothes “that take into account the environment, the health of consumers and the working conditions of people in the fashion industry” (West). Sustainable fashion is designed to be completely environmental friendly. This whole movement complements a larger trend of "ethical fashion," and according to the May 2007 Vogue appears not to be a short-term trend but one that could last multiple seasons (Sustainable Fashion).

Greenwashing in Todays Community

...In recent years, the competition among companies is fiercer than ever, and customers have been concerned about environmental issues, so many organizations devote themselves to attract customers via promoting green products and services. As a result, green products as well as greenwashing products, which are labeled as eco-friendly while actually they are not, have inundated the marketplace in modern society. However, some companies overstate their environmental claims so that customers have difficulty in distinguishing real eco-friendly products from greenwashing ones. This essay will show the reasons for greenwashing problems and discuss Chevron’s (one of the world’s largest integrated energy companies) marketing strategies, which hides its destructive environmental records behind eco-friendly rhetoric and advertising campaigns. There are four main reasons that greenwashing has become a problem in recent years. Firstly, greenwashing activities help to attract customers so that profits can be remarkably increased (Berkeley Media Studies Group 2008, p.20). According to Solman (2008, p.24), British Petroleum (BP), a well-known oil company, profited from the rebranding effort as the corporation changed its name to Beyond Petroleum which can be associated with nature. Meanwhile, greenwashing can help to improve a company’s reputation (Solman 2008, pp.22-23). For example, Solman (2008, pp.22-23) states that BP launched a series of campaigns, hoping that customers would reappraise...

In addition, the solutions were not environmentally friendly, creating a negative cumulative effect on the staff and the environment. "We've always been an environmentally minded organization, yet struggled to find 'green' products that could get the job done," said Dan Koenig, Facilities Services with TriMet. "While our old solutions worked, we were tired of the excessive product waste and the harshness of the chemicals. We were determined to find a better way." The Solution TriMet was very receptive to testing the Staples Sustainable Earth line of products and worked closely with the Staples team to see how the solutions performed in a real-world environment. Staples showcased the products’ robustness by selecting one of the organization’s most hard-to-clean areas – the underground bus pits below where the vehicles were parked. The power of the Sustainable Earth line combined with the ease of dilution, safe ingredients and cleaning versatility made the decision to move to Staples an easy one. “The Sustainable Earth line is a perfect fit for our organization,” said Koenig. “We’d been searching for a cost-effective, eco-friendly solution for many years. It’s as if Staples read our mind and created the products just for us.” TriMet was able to meet all of...

Eco Friendly

...Definition Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment (see References 1). This term most commonly refers to products that contribute to green living or practices that help conserve resources like water and energy. Eco-friendly products also prevent contributions to air, water and land pollution. You can engage in eco-friendly habits or practices by being more conscious of how you use resources. Product Qualifications Making a truly eco-friendly product keeps both environmental and human safety in mind. At a minimum, the product is non-toxic. Other eco-friendly attributes include the use of sustainably grown or raised ingredients, produced in ways that do not deplete the ecosystem. Organic ingredients or materials are grown without toxic pesticides or herbicides. Products with "made from recycled materials" contain glass, wood, metal or plastic reclaimed from waste products and made into something new. Biodegradable products break down through natural decomposition, which is less taxing on landfills and the ecosystem as a whole. (See References 3) Practice Examples You can develop eco-friendly habits to help you use less and make the most of what you have. Turn off lights in empty rooms and use a programmable thermostat so you're only heating or cooling your home when it's occupied (see References 2). Businesses can also institute such practices, in addition to bigger initiatives, such as company-wide recycling programs to conserve...
