Using Chemical Tests to Detect Known and Unknown Compounds in Water

POURPOSE
The purpose of this lab was to investigate the presence of chlorine ions, sulfate ions, and iron ions that are dissolved in water and use them to test unknown ions in solutions.

INTRODUCTION
In this lab, we are testing for different ionic compounds in water. If we can determine the presence of ions in known substances than we will be able to determine the presence of ions in unknown substances.

MATERIALS AND METHOD
Materials:

Testing Solutions: silver nitrate, barium chloride, potassium thiocynate
Sample Solutions: potassium chloride , sodium sulfate, iron (III) nitrate
3 unknown solutions (A, B, C) droppers spot plate safety goggles

Method:
Part A
1.Get all the materials and create a chart to record your observations.
2.In your spot plate, add a few drops of silver nitrate into 3 spots.
3.Mix a few drops of potassium chloride into the first spot and record your observations Do that with the remaining 2 sample solutions, sodium sulfate and iron (III) nitrate, and record your observations for each one.
4.In the next 3 spots add a few drops of barium chloride.
5.Mix a few drops of potassium chloride into the first spot and record your observations Do that with the remaining 2 sample solutions, sodium sulfate and iron (III) nitrate, and record your observations for each one.
6.In the next 3 spots add a few drops of iron (III) nitrate.
7.Mix a few drops of potassium chloride into the first spot and record your observations Do that with the remaining 2 sample solutions, sodium sulfate and iron (III) nitrate, and record your observations for each one.

Part B
1.Wash your spot plate or get another one.
2.Repeat the steps 2-7, but instead of using the sample solutions, use the unknown solutions (A, B, C). Record your observations for each one.
3.Clean up and wash your hands when you are done.

From my data table, we can see that
Unknown A and Iron nitrate have similar reactions
Unknown B and Potassium chloride have similar reactions
Unknown C and Sodium sulfate have similar reactions

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, we can determine the presence of unknown ions in known substances.
