Ever since I was little my parents have always told me to think about others. I grew up as the youngest child in a large blended household. Like many mixed families, mine is filled with divergent personalities. To combat this my parents continuously reinforced having empathy for each other. As a kid, I did not truly understand what they were teaching us; I just did as I was told. Now here I am, only a few months away from being an adult with an embarrassing amount of peach fuzz to show for it, and I can see the full value of what my parents were teaching me. Showing empathy for other people's struggles is the first step towards humanity. My parents teaching has helped me understand and handle issues at home, with my peers, and in the world. …show more content…
After the last concussion he came to me, clearly emotional; he told me that the doctor said if he kept playing he was likely to suffer major brain damage or paralysis. Distraught, I looked at him, amazed at how quickly everything had spiraled out of control. Not long before he was a freshman who had made the varsity team, and now one of the most important things in his life had been taken away. I stood there just putting it all in perspective, imagining everything he was going through. This could have been me. Our discussion brought me back to the days when I was a kid, I could almost hear my parents in the background telling me to listen, telling me to open up my little ears and think. This was a heartbreaking moment, but an impactful one, because it was the first time my parents teachings came together. It took a long time, but I feel like I have finally begun to understand the importance of empathy. I hate seeing my friends or family in troubled times, but I appreciate every occasion they feel comfortable enough to share their struggles with me. It is a humbling experience which has helped me connect with people on a deeper level, and in turn built some incredible friendships that I hope will last a

Value Reflections Paper

...Running head: VALUE REFLECTION PAPER Values Reflection Paper Value Reflection Paper An important personal value that I hold in my life is my spirituality. Spirituality can have many different definitions, depending on who is asked. It can be something as simple as looking for a higher meaning to life, or something so complex that one can base their beliefs, religion and overall life around it. There are several different ways to express one's spirituality; rituals, songs, dances, stories, and writings are all common methods of expression. Finding spirituality in something can make someone feel enlightened and bring strong emotion and deep feeling. Several authors have based some of their writings on their spirituality. Some of these writings are as intricate as the Bible or as basic as an article in a local newspaper, but the meaning and passion behind them should never be doubted. In my personal value system and for the purpose of this Value Reflection paper, spirituality is forever tied to knowing God and doing God's will. We often hear the word "spirituality" used to signify that one has faith in a higher power. Spirituality as it is seen in Christianity is to believe in God. As a Christian, we believe that God loves us. We believe that Jesus died for us. We believe that Jesus rose from the dead with all power in his hand. Spirituality as it relates to Christianity says believe on a merciful God that loves and offers us redemption in spite of, and because of, our sins...

Managing Deviant Behavior and Resistance to Change

...positive changes. Unlike much of the literature on workplace deviance which focuses on dysfunctional behavior such as antisocial behavior and workplace aggression, constructive deviants are employees who break the rules and norms but intend to benefit the organization. These individuals can play a key role in creating an organizational change and serve as future change agents. Given the increasing discussion on health care reforms, this paper explores the factors that relate to constructive deviance among physicians. Finally, practical implications and future research directions are discussed. II. Introduction Workplace deviance has generally been used to describe the following behaviors: antisocial behavior (Giacalone & Greenberg, 1997), workplace aggression (O’Leary-Kelly, Griffin & Glew, 1996), organizational retaliation (Skarlicki & Folger, 1997), and employee deviance (Robinson & Bennett, 1995). Although previous research has increased our understanding of the harmful effects of deviance within organizations, little research has examined the positive aspects of deviance. Constructive workplace deviance encompasses behaviors that violate significant organizational norms in order to contribute to the well-being of the organization (Galperin, 2003). Constructive deviance is becoming increasingly important in businesses today because constructive deviants can bring about positive changes. Unlike much of the field of organizational behavior which focuses...

Banks

...Influence of Service Quality on Attitudinal Loyalty in Private Retail Banking: An Empirical Study S Arun Kumar1, B Tamil Mani2, S Mahalingam3 and M Vanjikovan4 This paper examines the service quality dimensions of Indian private banks dealing with retail banking. Overall service quality level acts as an antecedent for customer satisfaction. The factors extracted give perceived service quality dimensions which correlate with overall attitudinal loyalty. Overall service quality further tested for any significant relationship with attitudinal loyalty, which is considered to be an important component of retaining valued customers. The data has been collected from 100 valued customers of two private retail banks of Tiruchirapalli. A questionnaireelicited information on socio-demographic variables along with SERVQUAL dimensions of service quality added with three extra contemporary validated variables and attitudinal loyalty variables. The results suggest that responsiveness and reliability of service quality dimensions determine customer satisfaction more than the assurance, empathy and tangible aspects (SERVQUAL score analyzed using Factor Analysis and Multiple Regressions). Overall perceived service quality fosters customer’s attitudinal loyalty through latent customer satisfaction (Tested using Chi-Square Statistics and Correlation Analysis). Increase in service quality of the banks can satisfy and develop attitudinal loyalty which ultimately retains valued customers. Introduction ...

Outdoors Counselling

...will be explored, all of which have been clinically demonstrated to be efficacious in a broad range of counseling settings (Egan). The skills of active listening, empathy and sharing empathic highlights will be discussed and analysed within the framework of a counselling case study. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to examine the use, efficacy and deficiencies of how these skills were employed within a counselling session with a mother, let's call her Mary. Mary presented to counselling with a five year history of frustrated attempts to get her daughter to sleep consistently in her own bed. On one hand, she had gone to extraordinary efforts to influence and sustain effective sleep patterns in her daughter. On the other, a feeling of being out of control permeated drained resourcefulness. Mary felt she was too compliant with her daughter's unwilling behaviour and sought help from a counsellor. The surface structure of Mary's communication lingered around a circular logic of focusing on "how can I get her to sleep?", using predominantly external resources. Her preference for externalization posed an initial challenge for the therapist as he was primarily operating from an internal locus of control. This was evident during his repeated suggestions to Mary to look within herself for solutions, and to value her...

Design Abstracts

...lost the identity unique to the context? What should be the interior design educator’s attitude toward teaching design and culture in the current age? We encounter dilemmas in global design, the results of which are sometimes almost identical regardless of unique settings because of our tendency to grasp design as a whole with respect to particular style or trend without fully apprehending the core and the deviation. Perceiving the entire design project as a mere symbolic expression also hinders our true understanding of design and culture. In this article, I attempt to answer fundamental questions regarding the complex, innate relationship between design and culture and suggest restructuring a conceptual framework applicable to related research and education that effectively reveals the multi faceted characteristics of design and culture in the present age. From the perspective of morphology, current individual design practice can be redefined as one entity comprising two coexisting components: One is a set of particular principles that construe a certain design pattern or type of design practice, and the other is another set of morphed elements embedded in design that reflects the context. The conceptual framework on which this article is based derives from George Kubler’s...

Despite a substantial number of studies on service quality, the reasons why guests revisit a hotel and why a high-quality service from the F&B department is needed have remained unanswered. This paper aims to review existing literature on service quality management in the F&B departments of hotels, its process, and the effective service quality management framework. This paper discusses famous models, and explains Parasuraman’s dimensional framework of service quality management in the area of F&B and its application to the hotel industry. The conceptual paper suggests application of the dimensional model in the F&B department and encourages hotels to improve its management to better satisfy their guests.
