Variations in Medical Salaries
According to the BLS, over a half a million new medical assistants jobs are created every year. Medical assistants often have the most contact with patients and therefore, play a critical role in the healthcare field. Being a medical assistant is a popular job because there is excellent job stability with ample room for advancement. In fact, many medical assistants move on to become a Certified Medical Assistant (MAC), Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Medical Assistant Responsibilities
Medical assistance perform both office and health care related tasks. Administrative tasks include checking in patients, answering phones, scheduling appointments and medical billing. Every task performed or questioned asked must be thoroughly documented. Medical assistants perform a variety of different healthcare related tasks. For example, they record the patient’s history, measure vital signs and assist the physician during the appointment. They also …show more content…
These reasons include education, years of experience and the healthcare organization size. According to Salary.com, over 60 percent of medical assistants have a high school diploma, over 30 percent have an Associate’s degree and only five percent have a Bachelor’s degree. Therefore, it is highly recommended that medical assistants pursue a two year degree in order to receive a higher salary. In addition to this, over 40 percent of medical assistants only have up to 1 year of experience, over 20 percent have up to four years of experience and under 20 percent have up to ten years of experience. Therefore, the majority of medical assistants have limited work history. Finally, over 70 percent of medical assistants work in organizations with more than 100 employees.
