...The VARK Anaylsis: Learning Styles Lesley Good Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS-429V October 19, 2015 The VARK Analysis: Learning Styles Over the years, research has discovered that the ability for students to learn is based off of an individual’s strengths, weakness, and learning preferences. These learning preferences are divided into five categories: visual, auditory, reading/writing, kinesthetic, and multimodality. The VARK analysis developed in 1987 by Neil Fleming “was the first to systematically present a series of questions with helpsheets for students, teachers, employees, customers, suppliers, and others” (VARK Learn Limited, 2015) to determine an individual’s unique approach to the learning process. “VARK is an acronym for the Visual (V), Auditory (A), Read/Write (R) and the Kinesthetic (K) sensory modalities” (Kharb, Samanta, Jindal, & Singh, 2013). To better understand how this process works we will establish a scenario using Student A, allowing her to access the VARK questionnaire and give us some insight and understanding on how the evaluation process works to establish an individual’s learning style. The VARK questionnaire consists of 16 questions and given the results we will review the learning style for Student A, compare preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies, and discuss how the recognition of individual learning styles, preferences and strategies influence teaching and learning. Summary of Results ...

...VARK Analysis Paper Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion March 1, 2015 VARK Analysis Paper Every Human Being is created differently and each one has their own unique way of learning and understanding information. Learning style is different for all individuals. Charles Bonwell and Neil Fleming introduced VARK model to categorize learning styles for everyone. VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. People use different styles to learn in different situations depending on the subjects they are learning. Most people use a combination of learning style called multimodal style of learning. VARK provides people with an indication of their learning preference. There are seminars and workshops to develop skills and improve learning. This paper explains the different types of learning styles and how it can help and influence a person’s learning and understanding. My Learning Preferences My learning preference is Multimodal way of learning. In fact 60% of people prefer this way of learning style and it is one of the most used way of learning styles .while others can effectively learn using any single one of the multiple preferences. Multimodal style learning uses two or more strong preferences. This style of learning or teaching makes the learner easy to understand and capture the attention easier and make it interesting to learn. Also multimodal style can help develop better ability to learn and speed up the understanding. Strategies...

...the Vark questionnaire, this author showed a strong preference for learning by reading and writing. In the reading and writing learning preference, this preference is for information displayed as words (Fleming, 2001). Many students and teachers show a high preference toward this type of style. The ability to write, and read well are attributes widely sought by employers of recent graduates. In this learning style, emphasis is on text based input and output, using all forms of material especially manuals, reports, essays and textbooks (Fleming, 2001). People who prefer this model spend hours on the internet, gravitating toward power point presentations over audio presentation. In defining the reading and writing learning strategy, the author identified that the reading and writing learning model uses intake of material in a text-based format. It uses lists, headings, dictionaries, handouts and textbooks as the prime source of intake material. Notes taken during lecture and manuals are also used as a source. When preparing to study, rewriting notes taken during lecture, and reading notes over and over, either out loud or silently, are some strategies used in this type of learning style. When preparing for test assignments or exams, taking practice exams with multiple choice questions is often helpful for students with the preference for the reading and writing learning style. In comparing, this authors’ preferred learning strategy to the identified strategies already...

...READ WRITE LEARNING: ANALYSIS OF MY LEARNING Read Write Learning: Analysis of my Learning Strategy using the VARK Questionnaire Claudette Bryson Grand Canyon University Read Write Learning: Analysis of my Learning VARK is the acronym used to represent, Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic sensory learning strategies that are used to detect the learning style that is best for an individual. Each individual has a specified style of learning which can easily be identified with the use of the VARK technique. The VARK learning strategy was developed by Fleming (1997) to measure the difference in learning styles. The VARK technique can easily be identified by completion of a questionnaire provided online. Four different learning strategies reflected the experiences of teachers and students. Read/Write is the participant’s or learner’s learning style (VARK Questionnaire, 2006). The analysis that will be explored by the participant is the Read/Write learning style along with the multimodal techniques that are intertwined within the participants learning strategy. A contrast will be outlined by the learner to compare between the strategies outlined by VARK analysis and that currently being used by the learner. Sayles states that, Read/Write preference, that is, “information displayed as words, many teachers, and students have a strong preference for this mode” (Sayles...

...Running head: INDIVIDUAL LEARNING STYLES VARK Assignment: Individual Learning Styles June 15, 2014 VARK Assignment: Individual Learning Styles As a student in Grand Canyon University’s nursing 429V class, one of the assignments for the class was to complete the VARK Questionnaire. VARK is an acronym for Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetics and was used first to describe learning preferences by Neil Fleming. This questionnaire assists the student in evaluating their learning style and preferences, and assists those who are having difficulty learning to know what else may help them to learn. The questionnaire demonstrated the learning preference of multimodal for this student, and the opportunity presents itself to explore what is identified by the questionnaire is in reality how the individual’s learning occurs. Learning Preferences The learning preference identified for this student was the multimodal preference. This refers to the learning style in which several preferences are very strong when scoring the VARK questionnaire, and the participant can choose between several of the four preferences to use at any time. Approximately 55% of people have this type of learning preference. This student’s strong preferences were, in order of significance, aural/auditory, kinesthetic/tactile, read/write and then visual. Aural/auditory refers to “mode that is spoken or heard; and means that lectures, email, group discussions, radio, mobile phones, talking...

...VARK Analysis Paper Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V January 20, 2013 VARK Analysis Paper According to the VARK Questionnaire, kinesthetic is the type of learning style that is the strongest. There is a big difference in the scoring, where the highest score was kinesthetic at an 11 and the lowest score of 4 went to aural. Visual and read/write scored about the same where visual is a 5 and read/write is at a 6. Taking the VARK questionnaire has been able to bring to light a lot of issues and insecurities about preparing for assignments and exams. Knowing which learning style a person is and understanding the proper strategies for learning can help increase the knowledge base for that person. The learning style that has proven best for this student is more of a hands-on approach of the material that is being taught. It is similar to jumping into the deep end of the pool when first starting to learn how to swim. The online program has had better success with this method compared to a lecture and exam setting. Seeing the whole picture first and then breaking down the steps that build up to the final product helps understand and retain the information. This is similar to a study performed to see the optimal learning environment of students in the healthcare field. Kim A. Noble conducted a study and found that “nursing students were classified as more field-dependent than students in other health-related disciplines” (2008, pg 245). Which makes it a little hard...

Summary of Learning Style The VARK Questionnaire consists of 16 answers where the participant answered as many boxes the participant felt appropriate. Once the questionnaire was completed, the participant received the VARK Personal Learning Profile analysis. Upon thoroughly reviewing both profile analysis, the participant concluded that the LDPride questionnaire results were very similar to the VARK Personal Learning Profile Analysis, both scores revealed that the participants’ learning preferences were visual, read/write, tactile/kinesthetic. Between the two profile analyses, the participant favored VARK which was much more in depth providing detailed scenarios and examples that the participant can clearly relate to. The VARK analysis is divided into two categories; Type One consists of learners who scores are between twelve and twenty five; these types are learners are considered to be “contextual” or “situational”...

...VARK Analysis Paper Tonya Kelly Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS-429V Serina Madden August 03, 2014 VARK Analysis Paper Learning style is a way of learning that helps an individual learn best by a given modality (Cherry, 2014). Individuals typically display diverse modes of learning with multiple and varied talents with differing modalities of learning (Kumar, Smriti, Pratap, & Krishnee, 2012). The VAK instrument was expanded by Fleming and Mills in 1992 into the VARK. The original VAK founded in 1970 was original Visual, Aural, and Kinesthetic learning (Bernardes & Hannah, 2009, p. 1-12). The Read-Write method was added to comprise of the VARK and the questionnaire was created with 16 multiple choice questions with four items each corresponding to the four sensory modalities V for visual, A for aural, R for read-write, and K for Kinesthetic (Bernardes & Hannah, 2009). The questionnaire, which is accessible online, is very easy to complete. The VARK instrument can help the student determine their learning style and enable them to apply specific strategies that fit into their preferred learning style and modality. An individual taking the VARK questionnaire with scores of Visual 11, Aural 7, Read-Write 14, and Kinetic 10 would indicate that the preferred or primary method of learning would be the Read-Write method or modality. The Scores of Visual 11 and Kinesthetic of 10 could indicate that the individual could also possibly be a multi-modal...

...THE VARK GUIDE TO LEARNING STYLES DAVIDSON EWUZIE Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona FAMILY-CENTERED HEALTH PROMOTION NRS-429V-O508 THE VARK GUIDE TO LEARNING STYLES Learning styles refer to the ways and manner in which individuals absorb, comprehend, process and retain relevant information. Each person is unique, therefore people have various different ways in which they digest and process new information. The idea of individualized learning styles has gained a lot of recognition in education theory and classroom management strategy. In the year 1987, the educational theorist, Neil Fleming, came up with the VARK model of student learning. This VARK model has gained worldwide acclaim and even till date, is being used widely to categorize individuals and their preferred learning styles. VARK is an acronym for: V- Visual, A- Aural, R- Read/Write, K- Kinesthetic Visual learners make use of diagrams, videos, posters, slides, flowcharts, etc. in order to understand and process information. They learn better using their eyes. Aural learners utilize resources such as tape recorders, attending classes, group discussions, etc. to digest information. They learn using their ears. In other words, they are very good listeners. Read/write learners employ the services of textbooks, handouts, essays, glossaries etc. in their bid to get new information. They assimilate optimally through reading voraciously and writing. Kinesthetic learners enjoy making field trips, field tours...

...Vark Analysis Juli Thompson Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS-429V February 28, 2015 Vark Analysis This paper will discuss and compare the different learning styles of the VARK Questionnaire. It will also address the preferred and suggested learning styles for this writer and if knowing specific learning styles affect the perception of how teaching and learning are delivered. The Vark Questionnaire was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987 to discern why some students were able to comprehend and retain information while others were not (VARK Learn Limited [VARK], 2015). This gave way to the question, does learning preference of an individual affect the way information is received and understood? This lead to the development of the VARK Questionnaire so students and teachers alike could determine their own learning style preferences. VARK is an acronym for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic learning types, or a combination of the four types known as multimodal (VARK, 2015). Finding one’s own learning preference depends on the answers given to various questions on how one would like to receive and give information, the answers are then calculated to give a percentage to each of the four categories to determine either a single or multimodal learning preference. Each learning style can incorporate different strategies to help facilitate learning and comprehension. For example: Visual learners can use charts and graphs, aural learners can...

...Formal Paper: VARK Learning Style Baromie F. Koroma Grand Canyon University NRS-429V: Family Centered Health Promotion Professor: JenniferWood 03/03/13 1. It is known that every individual in a scholastic setting has a different way of comprehending or taking in information, an exercise that is symbolized by their exclusive learning style. With one realizing their own learning style will not only convey which courses or subjects they are competent at, however will also enlighten them of the greatest active way of learning and reading for the areas of any subject. In 1987, Neil Fleming designed the VARK learning style assessment which is a questionnaire that has questions that which answered by a person will lead to four scores that gives up to five study strategies which are: Visual, Aural, Reading/write, and Kinesthetic (Fleming,2011). The way in which these scores add up informs a person where they fall within the five areas of learning strategies which is crucial to the education of every individual. This paper will elaborate in enormous fragment multimodal as the author took the VARK assessment and realized she is a multimodal learner. It will also compare and contrast preferred learning strategies with the VARK learning strategies and appraises any changes needed to improve study habits. The author use to think that she learn best from reading and writing of every bit of information, but after taking...

...A Brief Review of VARK Questionnaire and Learning Styles Grand Canyon University A Brief Review of VARK Questionnaire and Learning Styles “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.” (Confucius, n.d.) While this statement could be considered profound for Confucius, educators, and kinesthetic learners alike, this statement does not encompass the uniqueness of learning for every individual. As a result of the numerous resources available to students today, discovering one’s learning style could result in an efficient and productive learning experience for educators and students. “Attention to preferred learning modes allows flexibility for students and teachers to modify their behavior, if not their preference” (Flemings, 2006). Think customized education. New Zealand’s former Lincoln university educator, Neil D. Flemings and former Saint Louis College of Pharmacy Director of Education, Charles C. Bonwell designed a unique questionnaire available online known as the VARK . “VARK above all is designed to be a starting place for a conversation among teachers and learners about learning” (Fleming, 2006). While Confucius’s statement could imply he may have had a kinesthetic learner himself, “I do and I learn” (Confucius, n.d.), there are several other learning styles outlined in the VARK including Visual, auditory and Read/Write. After taking the VARK, scores will be displayed for each individual style. A participant could demonstrate dominance...
