VARK Assignment: Individual Learning Styles As a student in Grand Canyon University’s nursing 429V class, one of the assignments for the class was to complete the VARK Questionnaire. VARK is an acronym for Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetics and was used first to describe learning preferences by Neil Fleming. This questionnaire assists the student in evaluating their learning style and preferences, and assists those who are having difficulty learning to know what else may help them to learn. The questionnaire demonstrated the learning preference of multimodal for this student, and the opportunity presents itself to explore what is identified by the questionnaire is in reality how the individual’s learning occurs.

Learning Preferences The learning preference identified for this student was the multimodal preference. This refers to the learning style in which several preferences are very strong when scoring the VARK questionnaire, and the participant can choose between several of the four preferences to use at any time. Approximately 55% of people have this type of learning preference. This student’s strong preferences were, in order of significance, aural/auditory, kinesthetic/tactile, read/write and then visual. Aural/auditory refers to “mode that is spoken or heard; and means that lectures, email, group discussions, radio, mobile phones, talking out loud as well as talking to oneself are all facets of this model “(http://www.vark-learn.com/english/page.asp?p=faq_br). Kinesthetic/tactile refers to the “perceptual preference related to the use of experiences and practice, either simulated or real; and includes demonstrations, simulations, videos and movies if ‘real things’, as well as case studies, practice and application”
