...HIV Disclosure to Sexual Partners an Ethics Study Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a prominent disease in the United States today. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately fifty thousand Americans will be newly diagnosed with HIV this year alone (Basic Statistics, 2014). Although HIV can be transmitted in several ways the most common ways are via sexual transmission or intravenous drug use. Therefore there has always been a stigma attached to HIV – even for those who are in the health profession. A nurse who has been in this vocation for twenty years will probably be able to tell you of a nurse who refused to take care of an HIV patient. Nursing has come a long way since the 1980s, when HIV became known. However, there are still issues that a nurse may face today. One of these issues is when a newly diagnosed HIV patient has a significant other. Should a nurse, knowing the potential devastating consequences of HIV, tell a patient’s sexual partner about their HIV status? This paper will discuss, the legal, moral and ethical ramifications of HIV disclosure. It will weigh the pros and cons of a nurse revealing this information, and it will provide recommendations for nurses who encounter this issue during their practice. ...What is an ‘academic reference’? An academic reference is a book or journal article that has been “peer-reviewed” by academic specialists in the particular field. Academic references are considered to have more legitimacy and credibility than popular sources for this reason. Popular sources such as newspapers, social media, websites and blogs are not academic references and may have no claims to legitimacy or credibility. Why is academic referencing important at university? At university we are trying to develop critical thinking in students. Not “critical” in terms of negative thinking, but in terms of being able to analyse information and make informed comments about how valid the views expressed in the source may be. By using academic references you show that you can compare sources of legitimate information. Make sure you have a majority of academic references in your assignments. While you may use and reference popular sources, make sure most of your references are academic references. Referencing is acknowledging all of the material (books, articles, electronic resources – collectively known as your sources) that you have used in writing your assignment. Because this is other people’s work / ideas, you need to acknowledge their influence and ideas within your work. “Why bother?” or Reasons for referencing Referencing is an academic requirement. It is unethical (and can be illegal) to pass off the intellectual property of others as your own. This is called plagiarism. Plagiarism is regarded as a very serious offence (see your programme’s Student Handbook). Learning to reference correctly is your best protection against charges of plagiarism.
