...of his most popular songs “Jesus Walks” by saying “We at war with terrorism, racism, but most of all we at war with ourselves”. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn had the same idea, saying “the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being”. When I read N.T Wright’s Simply Jesus, I found similarities between these two quotations and the book. The quotes acknowledge that the biggest battle for humans is not with other people, but what is inside of us. Wright tells us that this battle is because the satan is in all of us, and we are constantly fighting him to do what we believe is right. During Jesus’ time on earth, the Jews believed that the Messiah would destroy the Roman Empire for them, and deliver them to the...

...Summary of the books of the New Testament Matthew The Book of Matthew is one of the four Gospels. The reason Matthew wrote the book was to show the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah that was promised to come. He does this by showing the Jews how Jesus fulfilled prophecies that were foretold in the Old Testament. He also details for them the lineage of Jesus to David. Matthew then tells us a little bit about Jesus’ early childhood and then he moves into the ministry of Jesus. He tells us about the Sermon on the Mount, what the disciples’ purpose and mission were to be, and about the hypocrisy and the future. He finishes up the book with Jesus’ arrest, His torture, and His death on the cross. The final chapter tells us that Jesus has risen and then describes the Great Commission that He gives to his disciples to carry out. You can see Matthew’s love and concern for the people by the way he told the gospel story. Acts The Book of Acts is narrative in genre. It gives us the history of the Christian church and the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It also shows us the mounting opposition to it. Although there was many faithful people were used to preach and teach the gospel of Jesus, Saul, whose name was later changed to Paul, was the most influential. Paul’s life before he became a follower of Jesus was one of persecuting and killing Christians. His dramatic conversion on the Damascus road is a highlight in the Book of Acts. After he became saved he did a complete...

...the True Vine" By Sean Young Jesus Christ portrays Himself as the true vine of God to His disciples for a two-fold purpose: First, to let His disciples know that even though He would not be physically present with them always, He would send the Holy Spirit to be “with” and “in” them (John.14:17 KJV). Second, He uses this opportunity to instruct them to remain in close fellowship with Him through the Holy Spirit that they may bear spiritual fruit, receive answers to prayer, and have fullness of joy. In John 15:1-2, Jesus states the following: “I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. He will take away every branch in me which has no fruit, and every branch which has fruit he makes clean, so that it may have more or bear more fruit. Jesus is telling Christians who continue to bear fruit that they will also continue to grow and prosper spiritually. The Lord will continue to purge us from all sin, in that He "makes clean" for the branch to bear even more fruit. An example of this is in 1 John. “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin”. (1John 1:7- KJV). In Romans 6:4(KJV), God's Word instructs us, that as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." Walking in newness of life is the same as abiding in Christ. In John 15:3-5, Jesus states “You are clean, even now,...

...order to reach heaven. Matthew 7:13-14 expresses that Christian life is not easy but filled with hardship. This verse eventually evolves into the name and definition of Early Christians which they embraced with open arms. First, one must understand the verse which is more difficult than one might think. Verses can be understood in a variety of ways to a variety of people because of situations in their life. Therefore, we must first come to an understood translation of Matthew 7:13-14. "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” NIV The first sentence is a direction. Jesus is telling you to enter through the narrow gate, not in the future, but now (Vought p. 180 & Cosby p. 126). Next sentence states that the gate and road which are wide is one to destruction and many people take this path. Yet the narrow gate with a hard or narrow road leads to life that many don’t choose. The second and third sentence can have many meanings. The wide gate and road can be dangerous because it is easy to wonder on the path also you can get lost among all the people. On the other hand, the small gate and road offers little deviation and few people to distract you. Therefore, the narrow gate leads to rough times, yet you are greatly rewarded for your faith and loyalty with eternal life, and the wide gate is easy and filled with...

...The New Testament introduced Jesus to Christianity. The entire New Testament is a theological account of Jesus’ life, death, and His resurrection. I believe that the Chalcedonian definition does correspond with the hymn drawn on by Paul in 2: 6-11. The Chalcedonian Definition affirms that Christ is “complete in Godhead and complete in humanness, truly God and truly human” Paul’s hymn points to factors that would support this definition. In Philippian’s 2:6 Jesus came from heaven in the form or likeness of man. Jesus is in the form or image of God, and He is one with and of God. When Jesus came to earth, He became a servant so that He could be in the form or likeness of man. Taking on the form now that is needed here on earth. If He had come in His Divinity, He would not have been able to walk out His destiny in saving mankind. As stated in Philippian’s 2:8 Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even the death of the cross so that all mankind could receive salvation. Philippian’s 2:9 explains that God exalted Jesus above all others while on earth so that every man would know that He is God. Philippian’s 2:11 goes on to state that, “And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” That indicates to me that God sent Jesus so that we could relate to God the Father. Jesus, while on earth did not want man to see him as equal to God. He needed man to know that if He could walk this earth as a man and not in his divinity...

...Roman Road to Salvation The ROMANS ROAD....is a pathway you can walk. It is a group of Bible verses from the book of Romans in the New Testament. If you walk down this road you will end up understanding how to be saved. Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." We all have sin in our hearts. We all were born with sin. We were born under the power of sin's control. - Admit that you are a sinner. Romans 6:23a "For the wages of sin is death..." Sin has an ending. It results in death. We all face physical death, which is a result of sin. But a worse death is spiritual death that alienates us from God, and will last for all eternity. The Bible teaches that there is a place called the Lake of Fire where lost people will be in torment forever. It is the place where people who are spiritually dead will remain. - Understand that you deserve death for your sin. Romans 6:23b "...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Salvation is a free gift from God to you! You can't earn this gift, but you must reach out and receive it. - Ask God to forgive you and save you. Romans 5:8, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." When Jesus died on the cross He paid sin's penalty. He paid the price for all sin, and when He took all the sins of the world on Himself on the cross, He bought us out of slavery to sin and death! The only condition is that we believe in Him and what He...

...was laying in bed reading my bible app, and I came across a verse that I knew had deep meaning but I wasn’t exactly sure what it meant. John 8:12(ESV) says “ Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”” I read this verse and My eyes drew right to Jesus’ declaration of deity. Reading this verse really softened my heart, after speaking in class about Jesus’ I AM statements. The verse was still very confusing to me thouh so i focused on it, I just kept wondering, “what is the light of life, and what does Jesus mean by “I am the light of the world.” So I thought about it for quite a while saying the verse over and over, trying to recreate the situation in my head. I started to think about what light represents; Life, joy, love, and basically anything that is good. Jesus is the beacon of all things good. At this point I recognized that I was actually meditating over scripture, and I felt tickled pink because I was supposed to do this for an assignment, and was doing it unintentionally. I started to focus on what Jesus meant when he said, “ Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness…” I’ve seen plenty of followers of Christ do evil. I do plenty of evil myself. I realized that God gave us free will. If we walk in darkness that is attributed to us not actually following Christ but following the evil one. I’ve always been skeptical when people say that God spoke to them through...

...Introduction In John’s Gospel, John provides clear evidence that Jesus is the Son of God and that by believing in Him believers in Christ may have eternal life. In the Gospel of John, it is easily discovered that John discusses the issue of sin compared to the other Gospels. John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Therefore, John makes it very clear that unless sin is cleansed through faith in Jesus Christ, people will perish eternally. Thusly, this scripture illustrates the ultimate demonstration of God’s love for believers by giving the gift of eternal life through the sacrifice and resurrection of His only Son, Jesus Christ. Further, despite there being a final judgement in the future, eternal life is in the preset-tense. For example, in John 5:24 Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my words and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to...

...Biblical Worldview Introduction As a Christian nurse, caring for others requires much, however Jesus promises to give us strength (Philippians 4:13) to accomplish what we have been called to do. Christian nurses have been called to care and to live out Christ’s command to love and care for others as Jesus Christ himself would care and treat us. In Mark 12:29-31 “Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: “‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these” (NLT). What does loving our neighbor as ourselves look like? Do we see others the way Jesus sees them? Do we understand that the least of these are also made in the image of God? How do we treat those who work alongside us? Let me expand on these questions. Example 1 As an Emergency Department RN, I come across people from all walks of life on a shift-by-shift basis. I interact with drug addicts, prostitutes, the poor, the homeless, the felon, the mentally unstable, the teenager that just tried to commit suicide, the frequent flier, and the list goes on and on. Before I walk into work, I pray for God’s grace over my emergency department, I pray over my colleagues as well. I pray to have an attitude that will reflect Christ to my patients and my co-workers and I pray that I may...

...Imagine, you are sitting on the side of the street begging for money, food, clothes, or shelter. You watch as the people walk by acting like you’re not there, ignoring you. To caught up in there own lives. How would you feel? Put your self in that persons shoes next time you walk by someone on the street. You as a Christian it is your job to help. Helping will not only help you and the person but it will help you reach the kingdom of God. Every time you help someone God remembers. Yes, he forgives you for the bad things but he also remembers the good things we do. When you help someone, it is like helping Jesus Christ himself. How? Jesus is in everyone. Everybody has a bit of the Lord inside of them. If you turn down someone who needs help it is as if you just turned down Jesus himself. If you help him or her, it is as if you helped Jesus. If you ignore someone, God will ignore you in the last Judgment. All that is written above will also help you in the second coming. The Second Coming is when Jesus visits earth again. We believe that when Jesus comes back to earth for a second time (Second Coming) there will be a judgment. The judgment is called The Last Judgment. The last judgment is when you are being judged on whether or not you are going to be with god in heaven....

...Newport News, VA www.parkview-umc.org One day, Jesus took Peter and James and John with Him up onto a high mountain, and “There he was transfigured before them.” The Greek word metamorphothe is translated as ‘transfigured’. But our understanding of the English word—metamorphosis—as a change or transformation, can be misleading. In all actuality, the transfiguration of Jesus’ face and clothing was not a change into something new, but rather an uncovering of Who Jesus really is! Peter, James and John witnessed, if only for a moment, the glory of God revealed in the Son. This was the true Jesus. There is a lot of talk these days in theological circles as to—“Who is the Real Jesus?” Few, if any, folks will dispute the fact that a man named Jesus did indeed walk this earth 2,000 years ago, and through the work of ‘outside sources’, that is, unbiased sources outside of the Bible—like Jewish historians from that time--we know it to be fact that Jesus was indeed crucified under the watch of Pontius Pilate. And much of the historicity of the Book of Acts is also backed up by other reliable sources as well. So there can be little doubt that there was a Real Jesus… …the question that many are asking is Who that Real Jesus is. This is probably the same thing that the folks who were living during Jesus’ time on earth were asking as well—including the disciples. In the chapter before this morning’s Lesson Jesus asked His disciples: “Who do people say the Son...

...him, "What’s the problem? Is there someone here who’s heard the sermon before?" "No," replied the minister, "I was looking to see if there’s anybody who hasn’t heard it before!" How embarrassing! I’m in a slightly similar position, because at Easter, it’s almost certain you’ve all heard a sermon based on what happened on the road to Emmaus - although not from me! It’s a story worth repeating again and again because it’s at the very heart of the Gospel. It highlights the living hope found only in the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. St Paul wrote to his friends at Corinth, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead" (1 Cor 15:19,20). But on that first Easter day that living hope was far from being established in the experience of the two people we read of in the New Testament lesson (Luke 24:13-35). Let’s put ourselves in their shoes as they set out on the seven-mile walk from Jerusalem to Emmaus. It was a: HEART-BREAKING EXPERIENCE Have you ever noticed that some of the saddest words in our language begin with the letter D? For example, disappointment, doubt, disillusionment, defeat, despair and death. All of these are summed up in the words of Cleopas and his companion to the stranger who joined them on the Emmaus road. They had left the dispirited and confused band of disciples with the events of Good Friday fresh in their memories. We can sympathize with their bewilderment. The Master...

...Comparison of Book of John versus Quran – Chapter 4, Al Nisa, Women The purpose of this paper is to provide my layman’s comparison of The Book of John from the Bible and Chapter 4, Al Nisa, Women of the Quran. My primary impression of the two books are that they are vastly different in how they read. The Book of John reads like a story, a narrative per say while Chapter 4 of the Quran reads much like a legal document or contract. The two books are very different and deliver very different messages to the reader. The Quran, Chapter 4 focus’ on women, it outlines their rights and their obligations. This chapter covers subjects such as a woman’s rights, how orphans are to be treated, inheritance, their obligations, modesty, behavior, tremendous and unparalleled sins, ethical issues, weapons, polygamy and men’s superiority over them. Female orphans can marry their guardian, if they wish. She is entitled to her fair dower. However, if she has poor relatives then they should be present at the time her inheritance is disbursed so that they may claim a share of it, that way they are not disappointed. If a woman is not an orphan and inherits from a family members death there is a very distinct division of property. Women (daughters) are entitled to a one-sixth share. A man (sons) would receive the equivalent of two sisters, or one-third. If an adult child dies and has no heirs then the parents inherit their property, one-third to the mother, two-thirds to the father. There are...

...Carlice M. Lewis Professor Joey Jernigan Theology 104 April 14, 2014 Word Have you ever had a day, week, or month that seems last like a year? Where everything that could go wrong did go wrong? What did you do to get through the day, week, or month? Did you reach out to a friend, family, spiritual leader, or did you lean on the Word? The word of God is a spoken word powered by faith to achieve a specific purpose, to glorify God The Father. Those who believe in it get the desired personal results to include: healing, deliverance, restoration, and they win battles. The Word gives light, and indeed it is live, gracious, active, and powerful when faith is applied. The Word was written over 500 years ago as a collaboration between God and man guided by the Holy Spirit. It contains a wealth of knowledge wrapped up into sixty- six individual books covering topics such as favor, mercy, faith, grace, and peace just to name a few (Hinds and Towns 1). It speaks to the minds, heart, and souls of both men and women (Hinds and Towns XI). The Word confronts our sin, exposes our selfishness, examines our motives, challenges our presuppositions, calls us to repentance, and asks us to believe it incredible claims, stretches our faith, heals our hurts, blesses our hearts, and soothes our souls (Hinds and Town VII). The Bible states in Proverbs 18:21, "life and death are in the power of the tongue (Nelson 342)" and if this is true our words have life in them. The Word of God definitely...
