Technology is rapidly changing our lifestyles on a daily basis. From how we entertain ourselves, how we stay in contact with one another, all the way to how we pay our bills. Successful attempts within the world of information technology have significantly changed the way we do business as well. Web and mobile-based applications created a new platform for businesses to expose themselves to new clientele, along with staying abreast to what competitors are using to compete with them. Individual use of these web and mobile-based applications can help a user upgrade his or her own standing in the business world as well, which is what I would like to talk about in this essay. In the next few paragraphs, I will address a particular application that businesses and individuals have been using lately that has become quite popular because of all of its features and “social media-like” qualities: LinkedIn.
The web-based application LinkedIn, founded and developed in 2002 by Reid Hoffman (formerly a board member of the company PayPal), is essentially a social networking tool for businesses and individual use that promotes professional networking. Once a user creates a profile, sort of like they would on Facebook, filing out any information they would like to share, they are now able to search and connect with other users whom they might know personally or have had a professional relationship with. Doing so grows those users “connections” which sort of follows a “six degrees of separation” logic: essentially that everybody is somehow connected through 6 people at most. This then creates a network of professionals and in turn promotes business and career opportunities. Users are able to view other users work/employment history, resumes, websites, etc. Fortune 500 companies have created company profiles on LinkedIn for promotion, advertising and even acquisitioning new talent for their company. The company created a mobile application for their website in early 2008, allowing portability and access on just about any mobile platform available at the present time.
There are obvious strengths behind LinkedIn that have made it one of the hottest social professional networking sites/applications around. Aside from being founded and ran by some of the great professionals like Mr. Reid Hoffman and Jeff Reiner (former Yahoo! Executive), LinkedIn has a user-friendly interface and simple but effective designing. It doubles as a career website as well as a social media website, which separates it from a lot of other websites. As mentioned earlier, LinkedIn allows companies to promote products and services on their website, creating more revenue and business opportunities for both sides. The website also complies with Web 2.0, which allows everything on the site run very smooth and efficient. Its’ mobile application takes part in the growing mobility of social media in smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, creating new ways for people and businesses to connect with one another.
Future growth of this company and its applications seems to be one that looks bright, with the addition of new features. “As of March 31, 2012 (the end of the first quarter), professionals are signing up to join LinkedIn at a rate of approximately two new members per second” (LinkedIn Press Center, 2012). This is partly due to the wide range of advertising the company has been doing on other websites, especially job search sites that allow users to link their profiles with their employment information on from LinkedIn, making the application process much faster and easier. Currently at over 161 million users, LinkedIn has the growth potential of a mega social media website like Facebook. “LinkedIn members did nearly 4.2 billion professionally-oriented searches on the platform in 2011 and are on pace to surpass 5.3 billion in 2012 (LinkedIn Press Center, 2012). This shows the activity on the website, which is projected to increase greatly within the next year.
Weaknesses are far in between in my opinion with LinkedIn. My only opinion would be for them to take a better look at the functionality of the mobile application. Upon usage of it for this essay as a review, I noticed a bit of a lag with the loading of the application and several crashes while updating my profile and information. This could be a huge weakness as the year’s progress, because mostly everything we do now is shifting to mobile devices. This is definitely something I’m sure will be rectified though with time.
In conclusion, the impact of information technologies on web and mobile-based applications has been immense, and opened the door for many opportunities for businesses and the individual user, opportunities that will expand as technologies themselves expand.

Exxon

...Exxon Mobil External Analysis By: Travis Smith, James McKiernan, Tom Johnson, and Peter Ackley Analysis of the industry This industry is controlled by several large corporations, and many smaller organizations. It is difficult to enter into this market because of the high entry barriers. There are many small exploration companies that contract out to the big players of this industry such as ExxonMobil and the members of the strategic group. Some small exploration companies are Continental Energy Corporation, Atlantic Petroleum, and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. Anadarko Petroleum Corporation works hand in hand with Beyond Petroleum, and was indirectly involved with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The members of Exxon’s strategic group consist of Beyond Petroleum, Conoco Phillips, and Chevron. These members are a part of the strategic group because they explore, produce, refine and market oil and gas. A reason why we didn’t pick Royal Dutch Shell is because we found that they have a joint venture with Exxon Mobil. With the recent hunches of more regulation in the oil industry, these corporations are investing in natural gas companies. In order for these companies to remain competitive they need to always be innovative and creative. This is another reason why we picked these three members as a part of the strategic group. Conoco Phillips is the smallest one in the strategic group bringing in only $16.99 million in net income at the end of 2008 (ConocoPhillips, 2008)...

...helping these children escape from the revolutionary group’s abuse. The problem is, the LRA been gone from Uganda for more than six years. Nowadays, there seems to be a tendency from the US to invade countries like Iraq, Libya and now Uganda; countries with political problems, high corruption and poverty. Countries that are usually rich in oil. To illustrate, the US army invaded Iraq on March 18, 2003. This country had the world’s fourth-largest oil reserves according to The World Factbook by CIA (cia.gov, Internet). The official reason for the attack was to disarm Sadam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction. Nine years have passed and they found only basic weapons. Many believe that they were really hunting oil. The fact that Exxon, Mobil, Shell, Total, BP, Chevron and a number of smaller oil companies got no-bid millionaire contracts to service Iraq’s largest fields seems to support this. Before US invasion since 1973, these companies were obligated to leave the country excluding them from the Iraqi oil market. (Juhasz Antonia, Internet). These contracts gave the companies an advantage in bidding on future contracts in a country of a large-scale increase in oil production. (Andrew E. Kramer, Internet). Presently the same situation is happening in Uganda. No doubt that this country needs help in order to against abuse of the revolutionary group. The country is seventieth in the list of...
