Jehovah’s Witnesses

The Jehovah’s Witnesses religion can seem mysterious or odd to some people who have never looked into the religion or known someone to ask more questions about it. However, this religion has been around since the late nineteenth century and has many followers who attend regular services and believe fully in their religion, as people of other faiths do. As most other religions do, the Jehovah’s Witnesses have a founder of their faith and a history to share about their religion and beliefs. They have a place of worship, which they call The Kingdom Hall, where they worship weekly. In order to better represent this religion I interviewed *****, who is a current Jehovah’s Witness. There are also many similarities and differences between the Jehovah’s Witnesses and more common Christianity religions. For example, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Christian religions agree that Jesus was the son of God. However, they have many separate beliefs; such as Christians celebrate holidays and Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in celebrating holidays or birthdays.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are a type of Christian religion that was founded by Charles Taze Russell in 1872 (Slick, n.d.). He was born on February 16, 1852 and had great difficulty in dealing with the religious doctrine and messages of those times. He particularly disagreed with the following religious ideals: eternal punishment, the holy trinity, the deity of Christ and the holy spirit. At eighteen, Charles Russel started a bible class and by 1879 he worked towards popularizing his ideas on religion (Slick, n.d.). Slick, (n.d.), “He co-published The Herald of the Morning magazine with its founder, N. H. Barbour and by 1884 Russell controlled the publication and renamed it The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah's Kingdom, and founded Zion's Watch Tower Tract Society (now known as the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society).” The Watchtower magazine started out with a low publication of around 6,000 copies a month and has grown with the religion to now publish around 800,000 copies a day, as well as 100,000 copies of Watchtower books. Charles Russell died on October 31, 1916, at which point Joseph Franklin Rutherford became the president of The Watchtower Society. At this point in their history they were called the International Bible Students Association, until Joseph Rutherford changed their name in 1931 to The Jehovah's Witnesses. This religion currently has more than four million followers and has close to 200,000 new members join every year (Slick, n.d.).
Many people are confused about the beliefs of this religion or simply make assumptions about it, due to not understanding their beliefs. Jehovah’s Witnesses have a set of beliefs that are based on the scripture of their bible, which does differ from mainstream bibles, The New World Translation. They do believe in the bible and it is the basis of their religion, as in many other faiths. Some of their other beliefs include: God being the creator of the universe, but they do not believe in the Trinity; that Jesus was not a God, but rather that he was God’s first creation and that he was crucified on a straight stake; that the Holy Spirit is God’s active force or God making his presence known ("Beliefs Of Jehovah's Witnesses", 2004-2013). They also believe that: people age, get sick and die because of the sin of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman created by God; that through the death of Christ people are able to be saved and can earn the right to be part of God’s future kingdom on earth; they do not believe in hell, they believe the wicked will be annihilated and that this will not happen until Armageddon when all people will be resurrected and given a chance at eternal life, but that the dead are conscious of nothing ("Beliefs Of Jehovah's Witnesses", 2004-2013). They also believe that the end times began in 1914, which is discussed in Revelations in the bible. This belief is that at the beginning of the end times in 1914 God gave Jesus his kingdom and Jesus has been ruling from heaven since then. Also, at that time Jesus threw Satan and his demons out of heaven and down to earth, which is why the world has been becoming worse, since then. They do also believe that, in the end, all world governments will be destroyed and that God will rule the earth himself, and that the end is near. In an interview with *****, ten questions were asked to get her perspective on the Jehovah’s Witness religion. She does not have any holidays or traditions to celebrate, because most of the holidays are not based on the bible. She discussed two birthdays that are mentioned in the bible and both times something bad happened to someone. She noted as an example, the pharaoh’s birthday from Genesis 40:20, as part of his birthday celebration he took off the head of the chief baker. She also specified that there was also another birthday mentioned in the bible in Matthew chapter 14, where it speaks about John the Baptist and how he was in prison because he had angered Herod. Herod was having a birthday party and the daughter of his wife danced for him and her dance was so beautiful that he told her he would give her whatever she asked. He probably thought she would ask for land or jewels but instead she went to her mother to ask what she should ask for and her mother told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist. Since Herod had given his promise or oath that he would give her anything that she wanted he went on and had John the Baptist beheaded and his head put on a platter and gave it to her. Jehovah’s witnesses do not celebrate Jesus’ birthday because in the scriptures it says that we are to celebrate his death, where he died for our sins, but he never said for anyone to be celebrate him as a helpless infant. The power of his death where he died for our sins, that is a power from a supreme being. Religion has made her aware of the world, and when she looks at the creation: the moon, the stars, the sun, the animals, the humans, and the plants; it shows that there is an intelligence far beyond any human. She likes to think that it has made her a more sympathetic being and it has given her a sense comfort to know that there is a source she can go to for her problems, when all else fails. When she thinks of creation, all its wonder and life itself, it has made her a more humble person. Some of the challenges to her religion come about because we inherit our imperfect heart conditions from our first parents, Adam and Eve, and the challenge is in trying not to sin. Other challenges are the many misconceptions and lies that people have about her religion. Also, when others are for example, celebrating perhaps a birthday, it sometimes can make people feel bad that she’s not celebrating with them, and no one wants their loved ones to feels bad. She always has to be mindful that in times past Jehovah’s Witnesses were put in prison for their beliefs. Her religion does not require her to dress in a certain way, but modesty in dress is encouraged. There are no specific foods that are part of her daily diet for religious reasons, but for scriptural reasons she abstains from foods that are bloody, for example rare bloody steak. She feels that she has never questioned her faith in her religion since converting to Jehovah’s Witness. She grew up in the Catholic Church as a non-baptized Catholic and then converted to a Jehovah’s Witness. She prays every day and attends services about once every two weeks. She believes that the preaching work she does is the most unique part of her religion. The preaching work is encouraged and is telling people that God has a personal name, which is Jehovah. Also, through the preaching work, reminding people that one day, in God’s kingdom ruled by Jesus, we will no longer have the problems that we have today. The one thing she would want people to know most about her religion is that it is a religion of love for mankind.
There are many ways to compare the Jehovah’s Witnesses with more widely accepted versions of Christianity. While there are many differences between traditional Christians and the Jehovah’s Witnesses, there are also many things they have in common. This common ground can help both religions to be able to communicate better with each other. Both mainstream Christians and the Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that there is a God and that Jesus came to earth through immaculate conception ("Jehovah'S Witnesses Vs Mainstream Christianity", 2004-2013). Both also believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God and that he was crucified for our sins. They also agree that Jesus was incarnated to teach people about God, how to live, to die for all people, and that Christ was resurrected. They both have places of worship, believe in an afterlife, have sacraments and believe in baptism.
There are also many differences between mainstream Christianity and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Typical Christianity believes in the Holy Trinity, while the Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe this to be true and correct. They do not believe in the use of blood transfusions even though it is common medical practice, because it goes against their religious beliefs. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus Christ was Michael the archangel who became a man through immaculate conception an Christians believe Jesus is almighty God who created Michael the archangel (Watson, 2004).
In conclusion, the Jehovah’s Witnesses have been around for a long time and they have their own system of beliefs that they follow, as most other religions do. They have a history that explains where their beliefs came from, how long they have been around and why they believe what they do. They have regular services at The Kingdom Hall and have some beliefs that are not commonly accepted, such as not accepting blood transfusions. They are religious people who practice a religion that has much stigma associated with it, due to rumors and misunderstandings. They are happy to share their religion with people, if those people are willing to listen or want to learn more about them. They are an uncommon form of Christianity but have many of the same beliefs as other, more common Christian religions. For example, they all agree that god is the creator of the universe, the there is only one true God, that Jesus Christ was sent to earth by God through immaculate conception to teach people how to live and die for all people’s sins to allow them a chance for salvation. They also have differences, most notably that they disagree about the Holy Trinity, which is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, according to most Christian religions. The Jehovah’s witnesses disagree with the Trinity, they believe that God is the creator, Jesus was his first creation and that the holy spirit is a force of God. Even with these differences Jehovah’s Witnesses and traditional Christian religions share many beliefs in common and share a common history. Finally, through the interview with ***** there were personal feelings and interpretations about the Jehovah’s Witnesses religion and how it has affected her life. She feels she is a better person, who is more understanding, accepting and hopeful person due to this religion and how it has influenced her life. In the end, religion serves the purpose of allowing people of similar beliefs the opportunity to congregate together and worship the way they choose.

...World Religions Report Jehovah’s Witnesses Stephen Devon Hill Jr. Axia College of the University of Phoenix January 10, 2009 In modern society there are numerous forms of Christianity. Many may be familiar with Catholics, Baptist, or Protestants. One form of Christianity that has created mixed views since its start is that of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Some thoughts that may come to mind when people think of Jehovah’s Witnesses are cult activity, unusual Christian practices, and domineering individuals. This paper will take a look at the life as a Jehovah’s Witness. The paper will cover some of the common practices and beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The paper will also try to clear up some of the misconceptions that others believe about Jehovah’s Witnesses. The author of this paper has taken the time to research the Jehovah Witness religion by visiting a local Kingdom Hall, conducting an in-person interview with an actual Jehovah Witness, and also conducting research on the internet, as well as the library. Background Information The religion of the Jehovah’s Witness began in at the end of the 19th century. The religion was started a small group of Bible students close to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1879 the students began publishing what is known as the Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. The group that was formerly known as International Bible Students became Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1931. Membership of religion is marked by baptism. According to the Jehovah’s...

Express Scripts

...Introduction The name El Salvador when taken literally is Spanish for the Republic of The Savior. It Central America’s most densely populated as well as the smallest country. Although San Salvador serves as the capital city, San Miguel and Santa Ana are other important commercial and cultural centers (Ramon, and Valdes, 2000). The main language is Spanish. Therefore, as a company, Express Script can do well by having initial operations in one of the three centers. Also hiring Spanish-speaking workers can help. Cultural attitudes toward women and children Children are taught early and expected to behave respectfully towards their elders. This involves use of respectful terms of address and also in greetings. In addition, they should obey and comply with requests or orders from the adults. Once children reach six or seven years, they can be reprimanded or hit if they do not comply with requests made by adults, answer back or complain. Parents also use shaming method to discipline their children (Mahler, 1995). To do this, they complain loudly about the guilty child to another child or adult when the child is within earshot. Shaming is usually used if the child has not completed the assigned chores, is dressed improperly or has performed poorly in schoolwork. This is important for Express Script employees from other countries who might find this strange. Women are also expected to respect men and should not under any circumstances raise voice to them. In addition, they must serve...

Supernatural by Brother Branham

...Supernatural: The Life of William Branham Book 6: The Prophet and His Revelation 1960 – 1965 by Owen Jorgensen 1 Acknowledgments: In a project of this magnitude, it is understandable that I should owe many people a debt of gratitude for their help. First of all I want to thank Pearry Green for his vision, his encouragement and his efforts in publishing and distributing these books. I also want to thank Saundra Miles, David Buckley, Jay Weber, and the other people who spent many hours editing and proof reading the six manuscripts in this series. Their suggestions helped to make this a better book and a more accurate account of William Branham‘s life. Also, I want to thank Steven and Kathy Strooh, who put these books into audio format for all those people who would rather listen than read. I must certainly thank those people who have translated these books into their native languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Norwegian, Hindi, and many other languages. Supernatural: the Life of William Branham took me 17 years to complete. I was 34 when I started and 51 when I finished. To put that into perspective, my four children were in grade school when I began writing this biography. By the time I finished, three of my children were married and I had nine grandchildren. During the 17 years I worked on this project, my life had its ups and downs. I want to thank everyone who prayed for me during those 17 years. Finally I want to thank my four children—Benaiah...

SUSANNA: Aye, sir, he have been searchin’ his books since he left you, sir, but he bid me tell you, that you might look to unnatural things for the cause of it. PARRIS: No-no. There be no unnatural causes here. Tell him I have sent for Reverend Hale of Beverly, and Mister Hale will surely confirm that.
