This video helped me to understand energy metabolism by relating it to a camp fire, where at first the sugar or glucose levels were related to building a fire and the larger logs are related to protein and fat, fat and sugar then regulate metabolism as they build upon themselves as fuel to keep our organs and other systems functioning properly.

What Is Life

...GET A LIFE By Muyiwa Afolabi Do you have your life? Please think about this question, do you really have your life? I've heard statements like ‘get a life’ on many occasions said to people who appear to be different and unconventional especially in matters of socializing. Many also think the whole concept of life and living is about fun, leisure and enjoyment. When an individual is having a great time, you hear remarks like he's enjoying life, when an individual is conservative and somewhat antisocial we conclude he doesn't have a life. Hmmm. What is life? I believe life is a season or a duration when an individual is conscious, aware and involved in matters of this world. It is a period when an individual is expected to fulfil a purpose, serve a purpose, make something great happen, impact the world and influence things positively. I believe we all exist and are in this world to improve things and make better the condition of this earth. We are all here to make the world a better place; to create value, not destroy value, to make people happier, mankind better and humanity more purposeful. We are here to improve the world. This, though being a collective purpose and objective for all mankind, as individuals our place, roles and assignments vary. That's why we are created and gifted differently. Our gifts and talents are indicators of our place, our projects and assignments in this world. The ability to recognise your place, your gift, your sphere and your assignment makes...

Life and What It Is

...When does life really begin? Is it when the first fluttering beats of the primitive heart of a fetus start, or when the child is pushed from the womb into the world? Does it all actually start at the moment of conception when the egg and sperm meet and mix their genetic code together to create a new being. Who can say really. No one knows because no one is sure of when life truely begins. There are many out there who say an unborn child isn't really a person, or even alive because it can not sustain it's own life. If this were true, then no one is a real person until they are living on their own away from their parents. When you stop and really think about this, without listening to the arguments about when life starts or if something is considered alive until a certain time, you would suprised at what you may find. When the primitive heart of a tiny fetus starts to beat for the first time, it is then that it starts to actually survive on its own, apart from its mother. Though at this time, most mothers-to-be don't know they are mothers yet, they begin to change their attitude to a more gentle caring way and doing what they can to protect the tiny life inside them in many different ways. Its that life growing inside them that started those mothering instincts. Its those instincts that protect it from harm until it is able to survive outside the womb and until it can live apart from its mother later in life. Even beyond that point, any mother will protect her young from everything...

The physicist who sparked a revolution in biology Erwin Schrödinger introduced some of the most important concepts in biology, including the idea of a 'code' of life Share 642 inShare9 Email Redeye tree frog Insights from biology and computing built upon Schrödinger's genius, changing our view of life forever. Photograph: Rick Sammon/AP Seventy years ago, on 5 February 1943, the Nobel prizewinning quantum physicist Erwin Schrödinger gave the first of three public lectures at Trinity College, Dublin. His topic was an unusual one for a physicist: "What is Life?" The following year the lectures were turned into a book of the same name. One of Schrödinger's key aims was to explain how living things apparently defy the second law of thermodynamics – according to which all order in the universe tends to break down. It was this that led my colleague Professor Brian Cox to use Schrödinger as the starting point of his BBC series Wonders of Life, leading to What is Life? shooting up the Amazon sales chart. But Schrödinger's book contains something far more important than his attempt to fuse physics and biology. In that lecture 70 years ago, he introduced some of the most important concepts in the history of biology, which continue to frame how we see life. At a time when it was thought that proteins, not DNA, were the hereditary material, Schrödinger...

This includes that the scientific method begins with a question based on an observation, and then a hypothesis and prediction are made, experiments are conducted (which need to be reliable, include a variable and a control), and lastly findings are reported. It has been a long time since I have gone over the basics of the scientific method. This video helped me review what I find so fundamental and second nature. Also, I think it is helpful to note that as the textbook states, “These steps guide scientific investigation, but working scientist typically do not follow them rigidly.” This video is an interesting tool to review the scientific method and how it is viewed by the student rappers. ...the truth from lies and delusions. The scientific method is just a list of steps that one needs to follow when solving a problem. The procedures for scientific methods are: a. Questions and Observation: One must observe some aspect of the universe and ask questions about it. Do research about the observation. b. Experiment and Evidence: Invent a tentative description, called a hypothesis that is consistent with what you have observed .Use the hypothesis to make guesses or predictions .Test those predictions by experiments or further observations and modify the hypothesis in the light of your results. c. Analyzing the date and draw conclusions from the experiments d. Publishing our final results into journals or a display board for other professionals to examine our scientific work. When consistency is obtained the hypothesis becomes a theory and provides a coherent set of propositions which explain a class of phenomena. A theory is then a framework within which observations are explained and predictions are made. What is the ``scientific method''?. (n.d.). What is the ``scientific method''?. ...straight. The world is dark, and I can only see the road a few feet in front of the van. As I watched the only thing visible, I saw it as also how God directs our life. With the light we shine it can only reach out a few if maybe just one step ahead. The road is laid out and finished, yet there is no way to know where it goes. Then there are the free ways, where everything is lit up. You are on fire for God, but when you return to be on your own, there is just your light again. It was crazy when another car came, and what seemed to be such a small light, actually shone very brightly to others. The light has such a power for piercing the darkness. It was also interesting, because although the driver was awake and driving the vehicle, everyone else was sleeping. So sometimes, groups of christians can become luke warm, and fall asleep in their faith, until the time comes where they need to wake up, and get going. Also there were lights from all the cars that passed, fog lights for the overview faith, slow and steady, headlights for the consistent moving forward, and highlights for when you are on fire for God. But the lights that are different colors, may seem the same but they are as the false prophets. They are the different religions. It is hard to tell when you have no knowledge, no truth. What Is Life?

...1. A media piece I found for the scientific method is a song that is used in science classrooms. It’s a very basic song that goes step by step about the scientific method that a student in grade school or high school could understand. It goes through the steps of the scientific method in probably the simplest way possible. Although it is very basic it still gets across the necessary parts that are needed to create a hypothesis and designing an experiment. It helped me to understand the scientific method better because it was simpler than anything that I had read so far. It was very easy to understand and just gave me another way to learn the scientific method. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA86dYxrg4Q 2. To understand the basic chemistry concepts that are involved in biology I found an article that is used as a resource for teachers. It explains that in order to understand biology you also need to understand some basic chemistry. The article states that, “Biology is about living things - organisms. All living organisms are made of chemicals.” The article goes on to describe specific individual concepts needed in the basic understanding of chemistry such as atoms, molecules and different types of bonds. The article makes it easier to see how involved chemistry is when dealing with biology concepts. Laying out basic parts of chemistry and describing its role in biology makes it less confusing and makes it easier to grasp each concept without getting overwhelmed. ...

What Is the Meaning of Life?

...Meaning of life is a deep philosophical question. It may be viewed by different perspectives of individuals. But one is true: there is no life if there is no meaning in it. No matter what we do, there is something we live for—there is a meaning of life because we are born. Life is a period of time through which a person lives, which includes sleeping, eating, working, resting, thinking, and so on. “Doing nothing” does not exist for a human being. The proportion of deeds such as leisure (sleep, rest) versus work (thinking, developing, working, communicating) constitute the meaning of life. Life is worth living I think; but how one lives determines the depth of ones’s life meaning. For everybody meaning of life is different. “Others may have loftier parts to enact; but my mission in this world, Bartleby, is to furnish you with office-room for such period as you may see fit to remain” (H. Melville “Bartleby, the Scrivener”, quote 167), were Melville’s words considering life of Bartleby. For a long period of time life of strange Bartleby coincided with life of scrifeners’ office chief, which generally has changed the meaning of chief`s life. But what was the meaning of Bartleby`s life? After a long story about his everyday deeds I would conclude that there was no meaning of his life. Nothing seemed important for him, nothing was interesting for him. He seemed to have no values and no desires. His life was empty. He lived, but at the same time he had no purpose. He was an...

What Are the Values in Life

...What are the Values in Life? Grand Canyon University Legal and Ethical Principles in Healthcare HLT-305 Professor Chornick January 10, 2014 What are the Values in Life? I think the answers to these questions are going to vary quite a bit from person to person. To me an ideal is what motivates a person and makes them who they are. The most important to me, would have to be allowing other people the respect and dignity I feel human beings should get. I think keeping as many options as possible open to oneself in life is important as well. The distinction between right and wrong, and good and evil is also important to me. Worth isn’t necessarily how much money or how many assets a person can accumulate. Worth to me is the do’s and don’ts, and the shoulds and shouldn’ts I live by in order to be accepted by others (Saban, 2013). If a person feels good about what they have accomplished, their worth increases. If a person is a little insecure about themnselves, their self worth might tend to be a little on the low side. According to Aristotle, a virtue is something learned through practice at a very young age (Sparknotes, 2013). I think some of the important virtues a person should possess are friendliness, accountability for one’s actions, compassion, dignity, reverence, meaning the sacredness of human life, nobility or having high moral standards, and understanding. I remember reading somewhere once that if admirable character traits are called virtues, then their opposites...

What Is the Meaning of Life?

...Tasia Barefield PHIL 104 - 003 Professor Steinbock 2-19-13 What is the Meaning of Life? After reading A Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor R. Frankl and short story The Grand Inquisitor on the Nature of Man by Fyodor Dostoevsky, one may begin to question freedom and the meaning of life is. Both books give their readers an abundance of information for them to decide for themselves if these two things go hand in hand. After reading both books I came to realize that a person does not need to be free to have a meaning of life. A person can find happiness in any situation they are placed in when they just have to find a reason to be happy. The Grand Inquisitor on the Nature of Man is a short story from the novel The Brothers Karamazov. The story about human nature and freedom is told by Ivan to his younger brother Alyosha. Alyosha just so happens to be a Monk and Ivan questions if there is a God. Their discussion is very dramatic and causes its readers to assume Ivan’s standpoint on religious faith. It almost seems as if Ivan is trying to get Alyosha to really think about his faith. He never says what he truly believes in; he kept his role as storyteller throughout the whole story. Dostoevsky’s story is about Jesus returning to earth to the city of Seville, during the Spanish Inquisition. He explains that the people automatically recognized him when they first saw him. Ivan explains to Alyosha saying: He comes silently and unannounced;...

What Is the Christian Life

...The Christian Life The only way I felt I could express what living out a Christian Life is through a sermon. I am trying to be creative but I hope this isn’t too out of the box. I hope this is what you are searching for. What is the Christian Life? (Sermon Format) At the end of Apostle Paul’s ministry he looked back on his work and said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (II Timothy 4:7). When it comes to the Race of Life and the Christian Life, I think we have a series of choices. Every morning when we wake up you have a choices. * 1st- We can choose not to run, but if we don’t run we can’t win or we won’t succeed and we are surely not going to honor God. * 2nd- , We can choose to run but not run our best; and if we don’t run your best we are sure to lose and again are we truly going to honor God by doing this? * 3rd- , We can choose to run, meaning run our best, and strive for the prize by focusing on the finish, which is what God has asked of us. That’s exactly what the Apostle Paul wanted us to do in this passage of Scripture. If we are going to run the race and win the race, we are going to have to focus on the finish. The Christian Life is starts by knowing Jesus Christ as our one and only Savior which is which delivers what we are saved from. After making that decision I think we then have to find our purpose and determine what we are saved for. GALATIANS 6:7-10 says, 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked;...

What to and What Not: Adapting to College Life

...requires us to have a strong ability to adapt. According to Organista, a blogger, “Moving into a new environment and meeting new people means leaving everything that’s familiar. The past may have been great, something that’s hard to leave behind; or maybe it was more difficult, you struggled just to get through, and what you’re facing may be a welcome change”. We can make these new changes as an inspiration to be better. We may encounter stress and anxiety, but we have to surpass it. We may consider stressors such as figuring out new living arrangements, redefining your role in the community, managing finances, and long distance relationship with your parents, how you will deal with your new classmates, and even your roommates can mean extra demands that you may not have been prepared for. Adapting to changes, learning new coping mechanisms, or revisiting some familiar ones is all important strategies that can help you feel grounded. People would always quote, “you have to dance with the rhythm of the environment” which is true. We have to adapt to our new environment. Life is survival of the fittest. But how will we overcome anxiety, stress, and adapting to college life? First, we got to have a good time management. By having an organized schedule, you can stay on track of your priorities and tackle each day in a proactive fashion. Second, we have to stay fit and healthy. We must implement a healthy lifestyle. We won’t be successful if we are always ill. Third, we ask help...
