...Writing is a major part of any career. As a Health Science major, I did not realize how big of a role reading, writing and communicating plays in the health sciences field until I start taking my degree specific classes. All of the writing thus far has helped me realize how important being a good writer is, and helped me to see some of my strengths and weaknesses. I have never truly liked writing especially in the academic setting, but I know how important it is. Writing is a good way of expressing yourself and reflecting and analyzing your thoughts. I have never been confident in my writing skills, but I have seen major improvement over the year and hope to continue to grow as a reader and a writer. Improvements in My Writing I have saw...

...most of my time writing poetry and letters so that is where the descriptive comes from and that is what works best for me. For example, I enjoy reading this kind of work just for enjoyment so it is often how I write on a daily basis. Throughout the narrative portion of writing I like to tell a story. I enjoy expressing my thoughts. Furthermore, I tend to use more adjectives and adverbs as well as figurative language and imagery, to create detail that allows the reader to envision the scenery and events in their minds. I learned that by using this process it allows me to get my point across easier for I and the reader to grasp the concept of what I am discussing at the time. I have tried other writing styles as well, others such as persuasive writing don’t work for me because with real life experiences I am never trying to persuade someone to purchase or do anything. First semester and throughout the second semester I have noticed a lot of improvement in my writing. For example, I have understood the importance of keeping my reader interested in what I am talking about from beginning to end and also allowing it to flow and by that I simply learned to not make my essay or paper choppy, I break up the different arguments or points that I am trying to get across in subtopics and that makes my work easier to understand and read. As far as critical thinking I simply make my judgments clear and well thought out. I know that I was not always this way when it came to writing papers;...

...class so far. I have learned a lot about myself as a writer. I have found that I tend to write in first person more than I should. It is not always bad to write that way, but it is not the most formal way to write. When I write I have to concentrate on not using pronouns such as I, me, and myself. I have learned that writing is not as easy as I thought it was. Writing takes time and planning. To have a nice, well written paper, I have to take time to go though it a few times to check for mistakes and errors. The biggest challenge for me so far has been time management. I am in high school and I tend to remember homework for my physical classes better than this one. I also have a part-time job and volunteer two to three times a week. Both of these things tend to get in my way when...

...while having my bath, conceived an entire new book—a sequel to a Room of One’s Own—about the sexual life of women: to be called Professions for Women perhaps—Lord how exciting!” More than a year and a half later, on October 11, 1932, Virginia Woolf began to write her new book: “THE PARGITERS: An Essay based upon a paper read to the London/National Society for women’s service.” “The Pargiters” evolved into The Years and was published in 1937. The book that eventually did become the sequel to A Room of One’s Own was Three Guineas (1938), and its first working title was “Professions for Women.” The essay printed here concentrates on that Victorian phantom known as the Angel in the House (borrowed from Coventry Patmore’s poem celebrating domestic bliss)—that selfless, sacrificial woman in the nineteenth century whose sole purpose in life was to soothe, to flatter, and to comfort the male half of the world’s population. “Killing the Angel in the House,” wrote Virginia Woolf, “was part of the occupation of a woman writer.” That has proved to be a prophetic statement, for today, not only in the domain of letters, but in the entire professional world, women are still engaged in that deadly contest in their struggle for social and economic equality. --Mitchell A . Leaska When your secretary invited me to come here, she told me that your Society is concerned with the employment of women and she suggested that I might tell you something about my own professional experiences. It is true...

This memo is to address my writing experience during college career. It mainly focused on what was the most helpful writing assignments I have received, my views on how academic writings are different than writings outside of school, and what I want to learn in this professional writing class. During my college career so far, ENGL101 is the only class I took that was focusing only on improving writing skills. However, during most of my major courses,...

...Reflect on your experiences as a writer so far – in high school, in other college courses, at home, and in the workplace. What do you value in writing? How do you write differently, depending on your readers? Do you write for your own personal pleasure? Writing has always been a hobby for me. From the time I was a child all the way up until my adult life, I often found myself writing short stories for fun. Writing is an outlet. It enables you to empty your mind of all of your thoughts and ideas and write them down on paper; while trying to make an attempt to persuade your audience. My experiences as a writer all tie in together. When I was in the 11th grade, I decided to sign up for creative writing courses. These courses were considered electives and I looked at them as an easy A. Creative writing taught me how to properly and effectively get my message across without error and in the appropriate context. My writing style depends on who my audience is. If I am trying to persuade someone, I am going to take a proposal or an argumentative approach. If I am telling a personal experience, I’m using a friendly approach. My writing style varies depending on the situation. If I am writing an essay, I’m going to try my best to write properly. If I’m texting, I’m going to use free formed words in a sense that I get my message across as quickly as possible. If I’m typing an email at work, I have to make sure that it is grammatically correct, and that my message is professional...

...Writing is an activity people take part in every day. It is a way to express the true side of yourself that others cannot see- a way to let out the feelings held inside. Those who cannot verbally express themselves may turn to writing. Many ways to do that would be writing a poem, letter, song lyric, or a poem. In my past writing experiences, I have learned to grow as a writer like a small seed grows into a beautiful flower. A test we call TCAP was my first writing test. It was a short essay that we had been given which was required to be five paragraphs long. The worst part was the surprise topic; they would not tell us until right before starting to write and then expected us to write a good paper over an unknown topic. It is like giving a little kid a new toy without instructions. I thought it was very silly at the time, but now I realize that it showed me how to think creatively on the spot. Writing is a creative, mentally collective process done by most every day. It is a way to express the feelings of those who participate in this activity. As a writer myself, I use this as an escape or vacation from the issues of reality. When beginning writing your ideas, you must prepare and arrange as if you were preparing for a trip. Decide what might be needed by making a list of the things that that would properly prepare, as well as any extra items that may be useful later on. The extras may be needed if anything goes wrong. Next, the writing must start before it can end...

...Essay 1 Writing Experiences My Writing Experiences 101 Ebony Harris Freshman Composition 1010-004 Cherrlyn Eller 2/6/2012 My Writing Experiences 101 Writing can be an intimidating task if you are not equipped with the knowledge and techniques to write a successful well-structured paper. More importantly in order to excel at any craft it takes practice and critique to make anyone an established writer. As an economics major and accounting minor, formal papers, essays and exerts are expected of me to write. These types of papers include research working papers that illustrate results based around a thesis. Through my college career I’ve had a lot of experience writing working papers , as well as evaluation papers based off of sample working papers I’ve read and expressed my stance. In this essay I will illustrate what experiences I’ve had in the past with writing and highlight any strengths and weaknesses I’ve experienced in each area. In many of my economic courses a lot of our topics of discussion were based on theory and evidence to support a writer’s research. For instance my instructor Alexander Padilla challenged his classes to read many working papers and write what our thoughts and educated opinions concerning the publications were. A lot of times he challenged our intellect by discussing more controversial subjects which initially were not in my comfort zone but highlighted many social phenomena’s our society faces today. For instance we read an article published...

...Robert Branch What do you expect some of the differences will be between your master’s degree program and the doctoral program? Deactivated Christopher Stevens 2 posts Re:Day 2 Discussion Question Day 2 Discussion Question: What do you expect some of the differences will be between your master’s degree program and the doctoral program? The differences between my master’s degree program and the doctoral program are in the whole of me. There has been a complete change in my reasons for pursuing another advanced degree: I now audit and acknowledge my motivational factors and professional values that drive my pursuit for lifelong learning and academic success, and my spiritual wellness is now evident and a reliable resource for good health. When I reflect on and realty-check my master’s degree journey, my motivations were about becoming gainfully employed and achieving a new credential. My values were about establishing my career and acquiring the benefits thereof. I was young, ambitious, and ready to change the world. Then, life happened. Life’s experience unlocked the door and invited me to be open to all possibilities; to take complete ownership of my journey; to cultivate a spiritual relationship with a higher order; and to know that divine intervention exceeds intelligence and is simply necessary. The key difference is the seasoning of my life. The seasoning that hones you and places you at a new crossroad to reach higher...

...Writing and Myself | Matthew McMahonUNIV104-1402B-18: Academic and Career SuccessJune 22, 2014 | When I first enrolled into this course, I felt all different kinds of emotions and wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from UNIV104. I would have thoughts in my head leading up to this class spinning in my head every night before the first day. Some thoughts like, “Maybe this will be my best class!” and “This class will be easy because I love writing!” were good thoughts that helped me boost my confidence about my college course. Other thoughts loomed in my head as well such as, “Do I really belong in this class?”, and “I’m probably going to fail this class with just one assignment!” Such thoughts as these brought my spirits and gave me a pessimistic outlook on this class. But now that I am done with this class, I find myself to be more at ease with myself and have a newfound confidence in the way that write. Writing has been an important form of expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult for me because I can’t always seem to find the right words to say. This has led me to be very shy in class. With writing, I feel that I am more expressive and have more control over what I want to say. Writing is therapeutic for me, whatever I cannot say directly I can just pour out my heart and soul. I have been keeping a journal for the past eight years and it has done wonders for me. I find myself not only...

...Meeks Midterm 08 March 2013 Why one college course is more rewarding than the other There are a few different types of classes in college. First, there are the classes in my major, which is Biology, that are directly relevant to my field of study. Second, there are classes that are fun and interesting, but completely optional. Then there’s a third kind: required classes that don’t necessarily relate to anything I’m studying, usually called general education or in my case, First Year Experience. The other category is the most frustrating. These are the classes where I usually feel like I’m not having fun or learning anything useful. However, these classes aren’t always the huge waste of time and money that many students think they are. One of my general requirements turned out to be the most rewarding class I’ve taken so far in college. That class was Public Speaking! This class didn’t have things a standard college class would have. I learned far more than I would have in a traditional class were we did a lot of reading, bookwork, and homework assignments. There were no big reading assignments! Nobody likes reading textbooks all the time. They aren’t fun to read, and I usually don’t learn well when I’m bored out of my mind. Public Speaking wasn’t taught out of a textbook, so there were no huge reading assignments for seventy-five percent of the class to blow off. Sure, there were a few small readings, but they were painless enough that students could just share...

...Project 1 – Academic writing Personal Essay If there's one thing you've had a lot of experience with at this point in your life, it's our class topic—education and personal development. You've been through at least twelve years of formal schooling working towards your development, and you've probably had plenty of other life experiences that could be considered educational with development as an end. This first piece is informal. Think of it as a chance to reflect on one of those experiences by writing about it. The key question you'll answer is "How has this experience affected the way I think/feel about school education or learning and how it contribute to your development of abilities?" You're answering the key question for an audience you identify. You might write to your classmates, in which case you could think of this piece as your contribution to our conversation on the topic of education and personal development. You might write to friends who are still in the high school you graduated from recently, in which case you'll need to remember that they haven't been reading and talking about the ideas we have in this class. You might write to a relative or close friend elsewhere, perhaps someone who shared the experience with you. Keep in mind the kinds of things your readers/classmates will understand already and what you'll need to explain and/or describe in greater detail. Please note your target audience at the top of each draft as you revise. Your goals as a writer...

...This is my writing experiences and history. I started with creative writing which I never completed and for school and then writing an essay on a subject which I just read a book on for homeschooling. When there was a deadline I always got it finished and as quick as possible and then making sure there is no grammar or spelling mistakes. My biggest weakness is that I procrastinate and will not sometimes finish a project. I will get anything done on time if there is a set deadline but otherwise will not usually get finished. My approach to English assignments is to get an idea, and then get it written or typed down, and then work on the grammar and spelling, and look for any missed punctuation. I spell much better than I did years ago from...
