After nearly 16 years of being the star of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Jon Stewart is stepping down from his hosting duties and will be replaced by newcomer Trevor Noah. In today’s media it is nearly impossible it is to find an impartial source of news media, but The Daily Show does just that.

In Jamie Warner’s article titled “The Dissident Humor of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Warner discusses culture jamming and its relation to politics. Culture jamming is essentially the rise against mainstream corporations and advertising, which in the case of The Daily Show’s tactic, is political branding. Today, politicians are using the same strategies of branding that marketers use for creating loyal relationships with consumers (Warner).

...“real” world. o Creators of media products use entertainment media to comment on the real social world. Readers and audiences develop at least some sense of the social world through their exposure to both entertainment media and news media. · Third – Concerns the troublesome term real. o The concept of a “real” world may seem like a quaint artifact from the past. o Social constructionist perspective. § No representation of reality can ever be totally “true” or “real” because it must inevitably frame an issue and choose to include and exclude certain components of a multifaceted reality. o Fourth- Seems to imply that the media should reflect society. o For many people, media are an escape from the realities of daily life. o Therefore, how “real” media products are is irrelevant to many people. However, it is not necessary to believe that the media should accurately reflect society in order to compare media representations with the social world. Gaps between media content and social reality raise interesting questions that warrant our attention. · The Significance of Content: five reasons why studying media content is significant o...

...language and organisational discourses are presented from the empirical data on “Aspects of Organisational Culture and Change” in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire to demonstrate the epistemological and ontological dilemmas faced by researchers in organisational analysis. Symbolic interactionism and stories are also used to highlight the importance of speech actors within an organisational change context in order to surface some of these dilemmas in business studies in general and management research in particular. These two provide alternative positions to Strauss and Quinn’s “maintained” analysis of how organisations and managers implement change interventions and employees’ reactions to these. Amongst some of my principal objectives is to demonstrate what can be contributed when researchers focus on what can be considered credible and valid knowledge that can be generalised in organisational and management studies. Keywords: language, methodological dilemmas, epistemology, theory and practice. 1. Introduction This paper focuses on the exploration of some of the philosophical and practical dilemmas faced by researchers in business and management sciences. I examine Strauss and Quinn’s (1997) methodological approach to the study of organisational and management practices to point out some of these dilemmas especially in the context of how employees experience organisational culture change. I question the rather...

Case Study

...Consumer behavior is a process. • Marketers need to understand the wants and needs of different consumer segments. • The Web is changing consumer behavior. • Consumer behavior is related to other issues in our lives. • Consumer activities can be harmful to individuals and to society. • A wide range of specialists study consumer behavior. • There are two major perspectives on understanding and studying consumer behavior. CHAPTER SUMMARY After reading this chapter, students should understand that: Consumers use products to help them define their identities in different settings. A consumer may purchase, use, and dispose of a product, but different people may perform these functions. In addition, we can think of consumers as role players who need different products to help them play their various parts. Consumer behavior is a process. Consumer behavior is the study of the processes involved when individuals or groups select, purchase, use, or dispose of products, services, ideas, or experiences to satisfy needs and desires. Marketers need to understand the wants and needs of different consumer segments. Market segmentation is an important aspect of consumer behavior. Consumers can be segmented according to many dimensions, including product usage, demographics (the objective aspects of a population, such as age and sex), and psychographics (psychological and lifestyle characteristics). Emerging developments, such as the new emphasis on relationship marketing...

Medicare Fraud

...Medicare Fraud: The History, Incidence, Costs and Institutional Remedies John H Everett Wayland Baptist Medicare Fraud: The History, Incidence, Costs and Institutional Remedies What is Medicare fraud? ("F&A," 2011, p. 1) states “Medicare fraud happens when Medicare is billed for services or supplies you never got. Medicare fraud costs Medicare a lot of money each year.” What is Medicare abuse? ("F&A," 2011, p. 1) defines this as “Abuse occurs when doctors or suppliers don’t follow good medical practices, resulting in unnecessary costs to Medicare, improper payment, or services that aren’t medically necessary.” In reviewing the definitions of fraud and abuse by Medicare it may be hard for some people to understand if they do not live in the healthcare world daily. In an effort to help shed some light on this, we will look at the history of Medicare fraud. It has been around since the Civil War, when the False Claims Act (FCA) was created. It was also called the Qui Tam Statue meaning “he who sues for the king as himself.” ("FCA," 2011, p. 1) “The law was targeted at stopping dishonest suppliers to the military Union military at a time when the war effort made it all but impossible for the government to investigate and prosecute the fraud itself. Today it serves a similar purpose because of the enormous size of the federal government and the variety or programs under which it expends taxpayer funds.” In 1986 the FCA has been revised over the...

...hacktivists during Operation Allied Force in 1999, that included taking down and defacing various NATO and US Government websites, several successful virus propagation attempts on military servers and countless spamming storms. This particular case raises curious questions about the legal definition of term cyberconflict itself, magnitude of the damage from a potential cyberattack on U.S. Government by terrorists and the level of preparedness of key military and intelligence units for the cyberwar. The cyberterrorism threat is real, however it’s essential to recognize that preserving the state of continuous distress over computer vulnerabilities can be profitable. Based on this research, cultural differences play a huge role in the world of computer hackers who decide what entity to attack and how, also the scale of a cyberattack doesn’t matter as economic damage can be devastating regardless of its size. Global governments need to continue working on creating workable laws that accurately describe the problem of cyberattacks and effectively enforce the solution. The modern world still has a long way to go before all security threats are addressed, appropriate defence is in place and all the critical computer infrastructure is protected from hackers,...

Economic Geography

...ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY Y U K O A O YA M A J A M E S T. M U R P H Y SUSAN HANSON KEY CONCEPTS IN key concepts in economic geography The Key Concepts in Human Geography series is intended to provide a set of companion texts for the core fields of the discipline. To date, students and academics have been relatively poorly served with regards to detailed discussions of the key concepts that geographers use to think about and understand the world. Dictionary entries are usually terse and restricted in their depth of explanation. Student textbooks tend to provide broad overviews of particular topics or the philosophy of Human Geography, but rarely provide a detailed overview of particular concepts, their premises, development over time and empirical use. Research monographs most often focus on particular issues and a limited number of concepts at a very advanced level, so do not offer an expansive and accessible overview of the variety of concepts in use within a subdiscipline. The Key Concepts in Human Geography series seeks to fill this gap, providing detailed description and discussion of the concepts that are at the heart of theoretical and empirical research in contemporary Human Geography. Each book consists of an introductory chapter that outlines the major conceptual developments over time along with approximately twenty-five entries on the core concepts that constitute the theoretical toolkit of geographers working within a specific subdiscipline. Each entry provides...
