What Is the Meaning Beauty?

When most people think of the word “beautiful,” they think of models and movie stars. I admit I used to be one of them. I used to wish I was skinnier, had fuller lips, or eyes that were a vivid shade of blue, green, or hazel. My friends and I would talk for hours about how we wanted to be tall, beautiful women with airbrushed skin like models. Now my perspective has drastically changed.

The day that I discovered what true beauty really is, I was with my parents and little brothers at McDonald's. We decided to sit in the Playplace, so my brothers could play with all the other kids while we waited for our food. Since Mickey D's only has tables with four chairs, I'm always the one to get booted to a nearby table to sit by myself. Usually, I'm a little peeved, but this time, it worked out perfectly. As I apathetically surveyed the other customers, I was suddenly captivated by my subject. She was sitting at a table two tables away and I could look at her without her knowing. Now, I wasn't being creepy-stalker about it. A glance here, a look there, pretending to look out the window.

The half-dozen children (all about the same age) were what originally caught my attention – that and the rapid-fire Spanish I've missed since living in southern Arizona.

As I continued to watch the mother with her children, I became more and more in awe of them. The mother had an ageless quality about her. I could tell that in her youth she had been pretty, not the traditional beautiful, but a warm, inviting one. Her skin was a light brown, smooth and soft-looking, a little at odds with the fine lines around her

Beauty Defined

...19 November 2010 Definition Essay Beauty To say that beauty is defined through the eye of the beholder is an accurate statement, yet quite cliche. Beauty is a something in a person or a thing that gives great pleasure to the mind and senses. Beauty is youth, a captivating smile, an alluring waterfall, and a sunset overlooking the vast ocean. There is no simple definition for this word and that in and of its self is beautiful. Although our worldly views of beauty have been shaken, twisted and contorted, the true meaning of beauty is beyond the single sentence Websters definition. Ideal beauty of the physical body is strived for daily in our society and all over the world. We have constructed our own meaning of beauty and strive for it. To us, beauty is pleasing eyes and a warm smile. Beauty is long blonde hair with bronze skin and skyscraper legs.To some, beauty is association with other people who have been defined as beautiful by others, because of their physical features. To be included with them, comes the title of beauty. Although these physical features are attractive, they do not accurately define beauty. This is such a shallow definition of the word. Overtimes, the meaning and definition of this word has been altered and redefined according to society and what it deems as attractive. Having an emotional well-belling is attractive to some. In history, symmetry of the body has been viewed as beautiful since it suggest the absence of physical defects and deformities...

Shakespear

...that comparing his beloved’s beauty to a summer’s day is not a correct comparison. Shakespeare’s choice of words and imagery provides the reader with extensive ground to diverge between two genres of poetry. It is unclear whether sonnet 18 is a love poem or it is in fact a poem about poetry, the poem is expansive in its meaning. The sonnet is structured in an argumentative form whereby the first quatrain introduces and idea, the second quatrain discusses the idea and the final quatrain expresses the poet’s views on what true beauty entails. The use of punctuation in the poem affects how the argument moves form one quatrain to the other. The tone of the poem shifts as the argument progresses. Sonnet 18 is extensive in its meaning; it may be easy to conclude that the poem is the poet’s declaration of love to his beloved. But it could also be argued that the poet’s intention for writing the sonnet may be to express that his poem will live on as long as men have eyes to see it. If the poem is defined as a love poem then the intended effect of the poem to the hearer would be to emphasize that her beauty is eternal unlike a summer’s day. Her beauty will last for eternity but the sun will not have the same pleasure. The mere fact that the poem is written down consolidates the poet’s idea that his beloved’s beauty is eternal. The poet makes it...

Plotinus vs Plato

...James Shelinsky The Meaning of the Arts Instructor: Josh Gillon 03/08/13 Plotinus vs. Plato Plotinus and Plato both see the nature of beauty as a product of a higher consciousness in the result of self-control. However, they both seem to interpret the idea in a different way. When it comes to the understanding of the nature of beauty the clear difference between Plato and Plotinus is that Plotinus believes that to understand the nature of beauty you must become Godlike and purified of all evil through the study of the “good” in beauty with self-control. Plato, on the other hand, believes that to understand beauty you must use self-control to resist the desire to possess what one may first see as beautiful to fully know the true nature of beauty. To Plato, one must learn to become a mirror image of that, which brings him desire through observation, rather than become pure or godlike as Plotinus believes. “There is no greater good than this that either human self-control or divine madness can offer a man” (Phaedrus 256B-256C). Plotinus believes that true beauty comes from absolute good which comes from the many forms of beauty that one may see or feel pleasure through. He believes to understand that “The soul must first be accustomed to look at beautiful practices, then beautiful works of men who are called “good”, and then to look at the soul of those who produce these beautiful works”(Plotinus 62). What this means is that Plotinus believes that you cannot see the...

Poetry Comparison

...and perhaps most well known sonnet. Using renowned style and diction, Shakespeare causes the reader to marvel at the meaning of this poem. The theme of love is clear throughout this work as the author is obviously writing to a woman he is in love with. Shakespeare uses metaphors and similes to bring to mind just how much he cares for the woman of his interest. The title itself raises the question just who or what Shakespeare is wishing to compare. This title sets the tones of love and beauty for the reader to grasp a better meaning of as they continue reading. The personal context finds the author writing about a remarkable beautiful woman. The comparison makes it clear that Shakespeare is infatuated with this woman’s beauty. Written in the seventeenth century the language of this poem is old English, making it quaint and complex. The rhyme scheme is in line with a sonnet. Every line has the ability to stand alone and has its own imagery. The imagery throughout this poem is very imaginative. This descriptive imagery causes the reader to be able to bring to life this beautiful woman as Shakespeare chooses to compare this lovely individual to the glow of a summer’s day. The question Shakespeare raises in the title is rhetorical, meaning that he has already answered it and does expect a response. Shakespeare uses descriptive words to make understanding the beauty of this woman just out of reach, as though she is too beautiful to ever be fully understood. The first quatrain brings...

Beauty

...Definition : Beauty Beauty is a subjective word and is defined differently from every person. Audrey Hepburn, a beautiful woman both inside and out once said, “The beauty of a woman does not lies on the clothes that she wear, the figure that she carries, or the way she comb her hair. The beauty of woman must be seen from her eyes because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.” To me, beauty is defined by the measurement of your personality and morality. However, people nowadays tend to define beauty through what they see in social rather than the inner beauty itself. The media has effectively brainwashed our society into accepting a false, even potentially dangerous definition of beauty. They want us to believe to having the closest to correct bust line and waist line with lipstick and mascara on is decent enough to show our beauty. One example that proves the significance of outer beauty in our society is the increase of beauty products and services that we have today. All of these products and services emphasize the beauty on the outside, not the inside which in truth shows the truly beauty of ourselves. It is undeniable people nowadays invest more on their appearance as they believe to media’s interpretation of beauty. As you can see, most salons and spas are fully booked, nail salon chairs were occupied, and the sales of beauty products increase from day to day. The influence of media is too strong that people only judge appearance to define beauty instead...

What Is Beauty?- the Uglies Book Review

...What Is Beauty? In the future, “uglies”, who are normal looking people in our society today, must get an operation to make them pretty when they become sixteen. Tally Youngblood is a typical “ugly”, and lives in Uglyville with other people like herself. She cannot wait until she turns pretty, then she will live in Prettyville and constantly be surrounded beautiful people. Tally admires these beautiful people from afar and wishes she could be one of them. She does not look at inner beauty and only sees what is on the outside of people. Because of this, she views herself and the other people in her town as ugly, when in reality these people are really the beautiful ones since their brains are not affected. They have the ability to make good decisions because their entire mindsets have not been altered. Unfortunately, much of society today also views beauty as being attractive on the outside; however, many people in our current society also look inside people and get to see beauty for what it really is and what it was intended to be. There are many people with “ugly” looks who are still beautiful because of their inner beauty. People can be average-looking and beautiful because of what they are made up of inside. Also, people can be beautiful on the inside and outside. Magnarelli 2 There are many people who have walked this earth that show us the true meaning of beauty, such as Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus Christ, and his mother, Mary. What enables the brand to be so successful? Why is Dove today synonymous with care and beauty? We believe that the answers to these questions can be found in changes that took place almost a decade ago and shaped perspectives, values, corporate culture and point of view of the brand and, consequently, also of Dove´s customers and the public in general. 2 Brand Management in Unilever Because of global decentralization and the lack of transparency in all operations Unilever decided to change its organization structure with the aim to create a unified global identity. ...to a summer's day? | Shall I compare you to a summer's day? | Thou art more lovely and more temperate. | You are more beautiful and gentle. | Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, | Stormy winds will shake the May flowers, | And summer's lease hath all too short a date. | and summer lasts for too short of a time. | Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, | Sometimes the sun is too hot, | And often is his gold complexion dimm'd, | and many times it is overcast, | And every fair from fair sometime declines, | and everything beautiful eventually decays, | By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd. | either by some unforseen circumstance, or nature's course. | But thy eternal summer shall not fade | But your beauty will never fade | Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest, | or lose its inherent loveliness, | Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, | even Death will not be able to claim you, | When in eternal lines to time thou growest. | when in my eternal poetry you will grow. | So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, | As long as there are people who see and breathe, | So long lives this and this gives life to thee. | this will live and give you life. | SONNET 29 | PARAPHRASE | When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes, | When I’ve fallen out of favor with fortune and men, | I all alone beweep my outcast state | All alone I weep over my position as a social outcast, | And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless...

...pieces I have chosen both speak of endings and changes. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” describes a sunrise and the beauty of it and how that beauty fades as the sun continues to rise. In “I Used to Live Here Once” the main character is remembering her childhood home and in the story visits the home and describes the changes. I choose these pieces because they are both about endings and change and use symbolism to describe the changes. These pieces both show the change in a very detailed way even though one is a poem and the other a story. In comparison they may not look the same but when you read the words in both you can imagine what is being seen and feel that you can see it fade, as nothing lasts forever. In the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” I found it is full of symbolism. "Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold, Her early leaf's a flower, But only so an hour, Then leaf subsides to leaf, So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day, Nothing gold can stay.” (as cited in Clugston, 2010) In the poem the first line states “Natures first green is gold” the symbolism I find in this line is green refers to new life or birth, often times you hear of someone young being considered green. This is a reference to being new. When the sun first comes up everything looks gold. Gold to me a reference to the colors created by the rising sun and refers to what we all cherish. Gold has always been something people seek to own, its considered a treasure. So in saying...

Unmasking Beauty

...Unveiling Beauty “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This quotation was firstly heard in Greek in the 3rd century. This means that various people could interpret beauty in different ways. So what is beauty then? According to Oxford Dictionary, beauty is “A combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.” On the other hand, Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as, “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” Based from these stated definitions, which is a more appropriate meaning of beauty? Where and how do these perspectives come from? From these descriptions about beauty, we can say that beauty has various meanings to people and media mainly influences these perspectives. Initially, the way a person looks plays an important role in our society. Our generation becomes conscious on aesthetic beauty and they base this on the trend nowadays. “Youth, clear skin, a symmetrical face and body, feminine facial features, and an hourglass figure —are those indicating that a woman would be a healthy, fertile candidate to pass on a man's genes.” This is an example said by Amy Alkon of how women should look for them to be seen as appealing and for men to be easily attracted to them eventually. Most women in this era struggle on numerous ways on how to become beautiful and maintain their physical appearances even at...

Kinds of Research Theory

...Aesthetician" redirects here. For a cosmetologist who specializes in the study of skin care, see Esthetician. Aesthetics (/ɛsˈθɛtɪks/; also spelled æsthetics and esthetics) is a branch ofphilosophy dealing with the nature of art, beauty, and taste, with the creation and appreciation of beauty.[1][2] It is more scientifically defined as the study ofsensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentimentand taste.[3] More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature."[4][5] More specific aesthetic theory, often with practical implications, relating to a particular branch of the arts is divided into areas of aesthetics such as art theory, literary theory, film theory and music theory. An example from art theory is aesthetic theory as a set of principles underlying the work of a particular artist or artistic movement: such as the Cubist aesthetic.[6] Contents Edit The word aesthetic is derived from the Greek αἰσθητικός (aisthetikos, meaning "esthetic, sensitive, sentient"), which in turn was derived from αἰσθάνομαι (aisthanomai, meaning "I perceive, feel, sense").[7] The term "aesthetics" was appropriated and coined with new meaning in the German form Æsthetik(modern spelling Ästhetik) by Alexander Baumgarten in 1735. Aesthetics and the philosophy of artEdit Aesthetics is for the artist as Ornithology is for the birds. — Barnett Newman[8][9] For some, aesthetics is considered a synonym for the philosophy of...

Oscar Wilde's Aesthete Analysis

...Looking at a painting on the internet is not remotely the same experience as seeing the work in real life. Walter Benjamin suggested that this is partially because photography is an imperfect medium in terms of capturing the true essence of an object, and partially because the physical and historical presence of a work of art in space and time has significance to us. Although Oscar Wilde and his aesthetes would disagree, in art, beauty comes from the viewer’s perceived connection with the artist, of understanding his/her ideas and of perceiving the artist’s subjective truths. Beauty seeks to connect us on a deep, primordial level to the human experience. Art, at its core, seeks to tell stories and reveal mystic truths about the human condition....
