...What makes a leader? What is the outline or process as to how a person gains the characteristics of a leader? Throughout the history of America in hard times we have called on a leader. Traditionally this leader has come in the form of the president; Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and now Barrack Obama. Is Obama, as an individual ready and capable of leading the country to another boom or will this new “American Jobs Act” plan implode beneath him? “You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?” Cliché as it may be, this statement holds much weight when thought about in regards to the “Jobs” speech, this statement or mindset must be followed. For an individual to be swept away with competent word command and a humble tone is concerning. What do individuals charge themselves when it comes to learning about political topics? We tend to have an over reliance on media, letting rhetorical style and safety blanket terms comfort us into feeling informed. The reality is not every person is honest, whether it’s the postman or the president we as humans possess a flaw, in that we are not perfect. I am not stating that the “Jobs” plan is deceitful, but that as citizens we must inform ourselves so that we do not misjudge information given to us. To achieve similar success to days past, we as a country need to start participating. Without the citizens there is no government, we operate as government for the people, by the people. Barrack Obama’s...

...I think for anyone to be a good and successful leader they have to be on the same level as the people below them. You can’t run around big headed all the time and not take anything into consideration from other people. There is no better way to get on that level than what Daniel Goleman describes as emotional intelligence. I don’t think as a leader you can be successful without relating to people especially on an emotional level. I could personally use a little help in all of the areas described in this article. The one that stands out most to me is empathy. I tend to walk around big headed and lack compassion or empathy for other people. I think it stems from where I came from and some of the things I have gone through. Nobody every showed me this type of understanding and so I just grew up thinking like this. I tend to be tough with my kids when something goes wrong instead understanding the problem and feeling sorry for them. I have gotten better over time and I think I am improving. I think in an organizational viewpoint you have to understand people’s lives and understand that everyone is different and everyone’s home life is different. If you can’t empathize with people, than you will never get to know anyone and eventually fail as a leader. The second one that stands out most to me is the self awareness component. I don’t always recognize my mood, whether it’s good or bad, and how it affects people around me. I do know that my wife confronts me when I’m in a bad mood...

...It's easy to get carried away with a position of power, so the best leaders are those who use their power for the betterment of everyone, not abuse their power for their own personal betterment. Furthermore, effective communication is also one of the characteristic of a good and efficient leader. He should be able to put across what needs to be done and how. At the same time, he should be willing to accept relevant suggestions from his subordinates. He should have the ability to listen, question, analyze and observe effectively. He should believe that actions speak louder than words. A leader who constantly changes his or her tune will confuse the team members and this will lower their productivity. A leader must therefore be consistent in his actions, his words, and in his thoughts as well. Leaders who are biased never make good leaders, so he should be completely neutral and should display consistency that amazes everyone. Thus, an efficient and good leader must also know how to co -operate with his team. He should get to know his team members should not appear as an overly strict and rigid personality. Finally as a good and efficient leader, a leader must have passion. They should not make the necessary courageous and difficult decisions and carry them into action. So, the people around the world should give respect for all the leaders. Thus, we also should encourage the leaders by giving importance to them and also become their followers. 3) Qualities of a successful person ...

...What makes a great leader? There are many schools of thought and mountains of research in attempting to answer that question. Answering that particular question is a monumental task and given the scope it would be impossible for me to answer that question here. What I will do is take a look at the given scenario and determine what kinds of leader each of the 3 executives are based on the attributes and characteristics of each. With the scenario given I have determined that Executive A should be classified as a “Level 5” leader, Executive B should be classified as a Transactional leader and Executive C should be classified as a Transformational leader. Based on the information given Executive A is a true level 5 leader. According to Jim Collins who developed the concept of level 5 leaders from a 1996 study, he “found that these leaders have humility, and they don't seek success for their own glory; rather, success is necessary so that the team and organization can thrive.” (Level 5 Leadership – Achieving “Greatness” as a Leader (n.d.). Retrieved December 30, 2012, fromhttp://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/level-5-leadership.htm). Executive A has the humility and drive associated with leaders of that classification. He attributes the company’s successes to those who work under him and takes personal accountability for any failures. I believe this takes pressure off of leaders under him and allowing them to be creative without fearing that they will be blamed for failure. Executive...

...What makes an effective leader? Discuss different qualities. Leadership is a process that helps a group of people to achieve their goals. Each of us has certain criteria of what characteristics an effective leader should possess. However, different people have different opinions about leadership and the qualities which make the leader effective. On the one hand, there are people who believe that effective leaders are born with those qualities and have big potential to become effective leaders in the future. On the other hand, there are people who think that leadership is something which can be learned. They believe that we all have the leadership potential, just as we all have the ability to run. Some people may be better than others, but each of us has a starting point to build on with training and practice. In my opinion there are four important qualities that any effective leader posses and I discuss each one of them separately below. Firstly, a ‘must’ for anyone aiming to become an effective leader is his/her knowledge. The knowledge in your field of work is essential because the more specialized you are the more you will be able to solve the problems you encounter on every-day basis and be able to guide your subordinates appropriately. Moreover, a general knowledge is always an advantage to you and your work as a leader. This is because, whatever your work is, being able to run a meeting, determine the goals and the objectives of your organization is something you...

...What makes an effective Executive/leader? An effective executive is the one who diligently work towards identifying the best way forward for his/her organization, takes responsible decisions and actions to implement them and motivate his/her employees and co-workers to achieve higher standards of productivity and excellence. There are few important traits that an effective leader need to possess, i.e. a clear vision about goals and objectives, a thorough understanding of his/her team’s needs and abilities, self-assessment ability and decisiveness. One of the most important aspects of being an effective executive or leader is the ability to communicate. On one hand, leader should be able to perceive the problems and requirements of people he leads. On the other hand, he should share his vision and plans with the team to keep everyone informed and motivated. In large organizations, it becomes very important and rather difficult to keep all employees aligned with the overall organizational goals and values. The leader needs to ensure that the information system in the organization is efficient and thus, each individual is aware of organizational objectives and policies. An executive/leader should be open to new experiences, new opportunities, new ideas and feedback on his decisions and actions. Firstly, it improves decision-making ability in a dynamic external environment where organization needs to adapt to changing consumer demand and competition. Secondly, this creates a...

...Leadership: What Makes a Great Leader? Leadership can be defined as a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs those individuals in a manner that will be most beneficial to them or an organization. Great leadership skills are a collection of many different characteristics. These characteristics help to make and shape the great leaders of many organizations. An individual may naturally possess certain characteristics that empower them to be a great leader, but it is various experiences that help to shape the best leaders. These individuals are usually well rounded. Those who lead are called manager, supervisor, or leader and they possess the authority to accomplish certain tasks and objectives within the organization. For an individual to be a great leader, they should understand the needs and the mission of the organization. Every leader leads his/her followers in a specific direction. Through motivation and negotiation a leader is able to resolve conflicts and achieve standards. One example of a great leader is Steve Jobs. A recent article in Forbes magazine referred to Steve Jobs as an excellent CEO. Steve Jobs has taken Apple to new heights. Apple, although an aging company, has recently reemerged as a leading computer giant. The introduction of the iPhone to the cell phone market has proven to be a key reason why Apple has once again become a major contender. In addition, Apple introduced the Macbook and this provided...

...these, often exemplified by protagonists in novels and television, one can examine the ways leaders are defined and are distinct from the general population. In examining these defining elements using insights from classic literature, modern television, and a variety of theoretical approaches to leadership featured in Northouse’s leadership text, it becomes apparent that leaders can know they are working for a good cause through their intuition and search for knowledge and meaning. Further, leaders verify the justness of their cause by practicing delegation, observation, and integrity. First and foremost, a leader can be sure they are working towards a good cause when they seek information, meaning, and purpose within an objective. Good leaders observe their surroundings, carefully taking in a plethora of information from various perspectives about a situation, and then decide upon the best plan of action. For example, in 1984, Winston’s initial mistrust in his government comes primarily from his observations...

...1. Clearly define the ethical problem. a. The ethical problem is weather I should do the “right” thing and report SFC Sharp. Who I understand to be an all around good leader. For a possible security breach without talking to SFC Sharp first to get all the facts straight. 2. Employ applicable laws and regulations. a. Every unit should have an SOP for dealing with the handling of secret material. I would check the SOP first and see what AR’s apply then go from there. 3. Reflect on the ethical values and their ramifications. a. The Army values that I find applicable to this situation are duty, loyalty, Integrity, and respect. I will take time to reflect on each of these values as I feel they apply. Duty: I believe that it is my duty to do the right thing here and gather all the facts of the situation from all parties involved. Before developing a course of action that may hinder the careers of both myself and SFC Sharp. Loyalty: My loyalties are both with my unit and the NCO corp. I feel I need to do what’s best for both. Integrity: If I do not take the time and develop the best COA for this situation. My character as an NCO will be compromised. Respect: Knowing that SFC Sharp is a good NCO I owe it to him to discuss this matter with him personally before taking it to higher. Because it may have been a simple mistake. One that may not have to jeopardize his career if it is handled internally first. 4. Consider the applicable morale principles...

...What Makes an Army Leader Practical Exercise ■ Step 1: Clearly define the ethical problem There are documents marked as secret wedged between the wall and the side of the desk. Also, the documents were marked for destruction 2 weeks ago. This action was certified by SFC Sharp himself. There is the possibility that the documents may have fallen off accidentally and subsequently overlooked. There is also the possibility that SFC Sharp was hiding these documents for dishonorable reasons. I also believe that SGT Day's opinion is flawed by the fact that he has worked with SFC Sharp for a while. I believe that he too is reacting unethically as he should be looking further into the issue as well instead of ignoring it. ■ Step 2: Employ applicable Laws and regulations FM 6-22: 4-32. If leaders inadvertently pass on bad information, they should correct it as soon as they discover the error. Leaders of integrity do the right thing not because it is convenient or because they have no other choice. They choose the path of truth because their character permits nothing less. AR 600-100: Chapter 2 - Responsibilities: 2–1. General Every leader will— a. Set and exemplify the highest ethical and professional standards as embodied in the Army Values. b. ...Money Talks … to Online Opinion Leaders What Motivates Opinion Leaders To Make Social-Network Referrals? MENGZE SHI Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto mshi@rotman.utoronto.ca ANDREA C. WOJNICKI Independent marketing consultant Andrea.Wojnicki@ gmail.com This study investigated the effectiveness of intrinsic versus extrinsic motivations for consumers’ online social-network referrals, specifically across “opinion leaders” and “non–opinion leaders.” The authors utilized a unique dataset that matched a survey with an online field experiment. The empirical results indicated “money talks”—that is, online referral rates were higher when extrinsic rewards were conferred. Notably, the effect of an extrinsic reward was significantly stronger among opinion leaders. In this paper, the authors highlight the significance of reputational concerns and referral motivations in this context. Opinion leaders may have developed a reputation of intrinsically motivated referrals across their social networks, shielding them from potential loss of social capital associated with extrinsic rewards. INTRODUCTION Given the commercially and academically documented impact of social networks in the marketplace, many marketers seek to harness the power of consumer referrals or word of mouth (WOM), whether it be online through social media (Kaiser, Kröckel, and Bodendorf, 2013) or offline. In the quest to inspire consumers to talk, some marketers offer rewards (i.e., discounts or gift certificates)...

...To what extent do you think a leader can make a significant difference to the achievement of a business’ corporation aims? (40) Leaders motivate people. They inspire people to do things they wouldn’t do otherwise. Leaders’ power comes from their personalities – people do what their leaders tell them to do because they want to. Managers are not always good leaders. Managers set objectives for their department and for the people in it. They organise resources to get the job done and achieve their objectives. Their power comes from their position – employees do what their managers tell them to do because they have to. Managers who are good leaders can persuade people that the decisions they make and the objectives they set are the best ones. There are many different types of leaders; people who style themselves on military leaders for example. Leaders need to make tough decisions and act quickly, but that shouldn’t instil a culture of fear among employees. One person who is seen to be a good leader is Richard Branson; most people in the virgin offices around the world would have heard a speech from him at some point. He states, ‘of course, there will be times when strong and decisive leadership is necessary, to make sure the right moves are made. If you place the emphasis on getting the little things right, and address the everyday problems that come up, you can encourage a culture of attention to detail.’ This shows that he can be a very inspirational leader as good leadership...
