...Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner focuses on our economy and the study of incentives. The two authors discuss comparisons that seem so foreign such as “What do school teachers and sumo wrestlers have in common?” and “How is the Ku Klux Klan like a group of real-estate agents?” Questions like these stir up the novel and essentially unravel the untold stories of life and consumption. Core economic principals are discovered within each story of the book. The title Freakonomics in itself has a humorous connotation with the combination of two words: freak and economics. Freak, by definition, means abnormality or oddity and most people might familiarize economics solely with finance or commerce. However, Levitt and Dubner break this common misconception and reveal how...

...Cornelius Jacobi Adams is my name, but what is the real meaning behind such a unique and interesting name. When Mrs Beddingfield assigned this essay, I didn’t know anything but a few pieces of information about my name. Cornelius was just a name my mother gave me because she knew I would be smart so she wanted a name to fit in with that, and Cornelius sounded quite interesting and intelligent. I really don’t know anything about my middle name, Jacobi, except for the fact that it just sounded good. My last name, Adams, comes from my grandmother’s name. Adams was her name when she got married and she had it ever since. I would like to discover more about my name and the real meaning behind it. I would also like to know where my name came from and where did it originate from. By using the Internet, a personal interview, and a book, I discovered interesting fact about my first, middle, and last names. What I Learned My first name, Cornelius is not as popular today as it was in the 16th through the 18th centuries. It is found in the bible. In the new Testament, Cornelius is found in Acts as a wise...

...whom would not look at it right? In 3 months Google plus has managed to gross over 25 million users which makes it the fastest growing social media platform so far that we have seen. They each have their own pros and cons but it basically comes down to what you prefer the most. One aspect of Google plus that I found very cool was that you can have circles of friends and you can place people in the circles that you wish. I have labeled one circle strictly for “family” another strictly for “friends” and lastly one strictly for “basketball and golf”. You can also choose whose statuses you choose to read, if you are tired about hearing about the annual family cookout on Google plus you can switch from your “family” circle to your “friends” circle and see what they are doing at the moment. I thought that the circles aspect of Google plus was something awesome and something I think will eventually draw tons of users in. Another pro about Google plus is you can limit the people who see your statuses. For example if you don’t want your parents to see the stunts you tried to pull last night, you can restrict your statuses to people who are strictly in friends circles that your parents are not. This would have been incredibly useful in my younger teenage years, but o well I got by. The last thing that I found awesome about Google plus is the video chat feature that they have. The video chats are run through Skype and can potentially link you with 10 different users during a call. This could...

...A majority of adoptions are rather depressing and heart-wrenching tales that are full of smoke screens and dreary details that can really affect the adoptee. When my mother told me that I was adopted, I knew, but I was still shocked to a degree. My family is a group of Southern Methodist, ultra-conservative, military, white individuals, who look the complete opposite of me. Not only am I just not a different shade of color, but also I am of a completely different race. My adoption from South Korea at the age of three was a blessing, but being comfortable about who I was, was the greatest challenge. In all family photos, I was the one that stood out, and it was not because of a goofy smile or a silly sweater. It was because I was simply a dark-haired, tan, South Korean against a white canvas. Starting school and trying to explain to people that my uber-athletic, short, white brother, Colsen, was in fact my brother, could have been part of the show “Punked” due to people’s reactions. Their mouths dropped, and always began with an awkward pause, and then the generic question, “Well you are adopted then right?” The question used to be the hardest one to answer because it was asked so many times and always ended with pity. The question itself depressed me because it made me feel as if I did not belong, and made me...

...vital. That is the concept of real life experiences. The debate of what to be educated really means has been going on for centuries, yet the answer isn’t esoteric at all! The scintillating Henry David Thoreau amazed scholars of his philosophy that one simply doesn’t just go to school to be educated, but one has to experience the world in order to be prepared for it. He lived in a small house on Walden Pond and lived off of the land. He quoted “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had...

...Thematic Questions 1. What is a crucible and how is it used? Justify Miller’s choice of title for his play. A crucible is a ceramic container that can withstand very high temperature and is used for metal, glass and pigment production as well as a number of modern laboratory processes. Miller’s choice of the title “The Crucible” is due to the same reason as the courtroom being referred to as a crucible: using the heat of questioning and scrutiny, they burned away all the impurities, i.e. lies and half-truths, to get the purified product the “truth”. 2. How do Hale’s preconceptions influence his interpretation of events? How does his interpretation change? What are the implications of his conversion? Hale’s preconceptions has influenced his interpretation of events in that he initially thought that he had the authority over the town due to his extensive knowledge of witchcraft. He expected to find witches, however his interpretation changes throughout the play as he realises that innocent townspeople are being falsely accused, such as John Proctor. The implications of his conversion are when he encourages the accused to confess, i.e. the good people to lie, even though he believes that he is doing the “Devil’s work”. 3. Proctor calls Hale “Pontius Pilate.” Explain the allusion. Do you agree or disagree? The allusion is that Pontius Pilate was the ruler in Bethlehem who ordered the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at the order of the Jewish leadership, despite the...

...Descartes: Can this be real? Am I in a dream? This must be real since I have conscious thoughts that I can manipulate. I remember everything in life and who I am, but I can not use any of my senses. They would have deceived me anyways, they have done so in the past and will so again. What is this? Socrates: You are not dreaming, for I am here as well. As for reality, I believe reality is twofold. Matter and a spirit reality. Based on the information I have gathered and from listening to you, it seems our minds have been separated from our bodies. Do not feel discouraged for this is a good thing. The body constantly has to deal with sensory appetites, which is like you said deceitful. Our body is not our true self. Our true self is our mind...

...On Zits’ second to last flight in the book, he was inside a pilot named Jimmy. Jimmy’s character struggles very much with the burden of being betrayed by his close companion, Abbad, whom he taught to fly planes only to find out later that he committed an act of terrorism with that ability. Jimmy recalls a memory he has when he said, “‘[Abbad], you are my best friend,’ … ‘[and] you are my brother,’ Abbad said. Oh, Abbad, you are a murderer. Oh, Abbad, you are a betrayer” (130). In this quote, Jimmy shows readers that he had a very close relationship with Abbad and now only feels that he is a murderer because of him and an immense betrayer. This is important because it is an example that proves everyone is capable of betraying, even the closest people in your life. It is relevant, especially to Zits since it shows him betrayal can come from any person. Every time people trust others they are at risk of being betrayed. All Zits knew of his father his whole life was...
