White Robes
They taught me that black people was a disease, a disease that intended to infest the humanity. I turned eighteen, it was the day that I had been looking forward to, I could finally join the Ku Klux Klan. My parents had told me so much about these people, or what you would call them; a failure to mankind. The day I turned eighteen my parents bought me the Ku Klux Klans robe, my father knew the grand wizard, so I did not have to wait or anything. I still remember when the grand wizard came to me, told me that the black people was having a gathering at the black church. We were waiting outside the church waiting for them to finish, I was anxious, really anxious, waiting there silently. I had some brass knuckles on. Finally they came out, we rushed at them like wild animals, I grabbed him at the shirt. First punch struck his chin. He no time to react before the second punch hit him. Blood, I could see blood from his chin falling down, that's when the leader of our group yelled that we were finished. We went back to our hiding place. we began celebrating. Beers to everyone. Again had they beaten the negroes, as was also my first assignment. Our leader, Calvin, came over to me, took my hand, shooked it and said:“ This boy was born to beat Negroes ”. The next day I woke up, I had a rough night and I could still feel my knuckles, I thought that I broke one of them. The blood was still there, but who cares, it was a victory. I came home, the smile on my parents faces, asked if I could tell them everything that happened that night. I was a success for them, my parents was KKK members before me and their parents before them. A never ending chain of family members. I thought my parents wanted me to be a lawyer or a doctor, but no, becoming a KKK member were their biggest dream. We were supported by the town so we did not have to work, we all had a salary and it all depended on which rank you had. I was in the back garden, what a beautiful day it was, the light , the flowers, everything were just perfect. The door knocked, I went to the door, it was the Grand Wizard, smiling, he told me that they had a surprise, and everyone were gathered. I went straight to my room, grabbed my robe and hurried over there. When we arrived, there was a field. KKK members everywhere. loud music. Some sort of celebration, when suddenly the music stopped, a man came out starting yelling something. I could not hear it, they took a cross out, then the Grand Wizard took my hand and took me to the cross right in front of me, there was a Negro tied to the cross. They raised the cross, put firewood underneath it and poured gasoline. They gave me a torch with fire, I took it and set fire to the wood, I saw a tear roll down his cheek, he looked at me, saying:“ What have I done to deserve this? ". I just stood there, looking at the fire. I was burning, my soul, myself, on fire, just like the lynched negro. Never again.

The Burial of Count Orgaz

...This painting is the most intriguing for El Greco’s use of two focal points. In El Greco’s career The Burial of Count Orgaz is widely accepted as his greatest work. In describing the painting itself it is divided into two sections, one being a burial scene of Count Orgaz in the lower half portion of the artwork, and a scene of heaven with Christ and the saints swirling overhead among thin silky clouds. The two distinct sections of this artwork give the painting two focal points, which the eyes are drawn towards. The section of the artwork depicting heaven has Christ as a focal point, he is centered at the very top of the painting with virtually every figure around him looking up with some motioning towards him. Christ is dressed in white robe, and the figures surrounding Christ vary from Saints to musicians, angles, multitudes of followers, and the Virgin Mary. The figures all seem to be swirling among silky clouds around Christ which gives each figure a distinct position and proportion in the painting, some closer up and distinctive, other more further away and faded. The burial scene directly below the heavens has the Count Orgaz as the focal point and he is positioned near the lowest part of the painting and perpendicular to Christ. The mourners around the Count Orgaz are dressed in formal coats of black and all are similarly positioned in the background. The Count Orgaz himself is richly dressed in the foreground, in plates of black armor with gold ornations, and he is...

...themselves in their greatest braveries. Before a fire upon a seat like a bedstead, he sat covered with a great robe, made of raccoon skins, and all the tails hanging by. On either hand did sit a young wench of 16 or 18 years, and along on each side the house, two rows of men, and behind them as many women, with all their heads and shoulders painted red; many of their heads bedecked with the white down of birds; but every one with something: and a great chain of white beads about their necks. At his entrance before the King, all the people gave a great shout. The Queen of Appamatuck was appointed to bring him water to wash his hands, and another brought him a bunch of feathers, instead of a towel to dry them. Having feasted him after their best barbarous manner they could, a long consultation was held, but the conclusion was, two great stones were brought before Powhatan: then as many as could laid hands on him, dragged him to them, and thereon laid his head, and being ready with their clubs, to beat out his brains, Pocahontas the King’s dearest daughter, when no entreaty could prevail, got his head in her arms, and laid her own upon his to save his from death: whereat the Emperor was contented he should live to make him hatchets, and her bells, beads, and copper; for they thought him as well of all occupations as themselves. For the King himself will make his own robes, shoes, bows, arrows, pots; plant, hunt, or do any thing so well as the rest. They say he bore a pleasant...

My Best Day Ever

...how important family means to me.       On March 22, 1979, it was a warm, beautiful, breezy, summer day, and I could hear the chirping of baby birds in their nest. Upon my face shined the bright sun through my bedroom window. This day represented my birth right of turning fourteen years old, and I needed to figure out what to wear on this special occasion. As I walked toward my closet door, there was a breeze of warm spring sunflowers gathering in each corner of my bedroom. As I inhaled this delightful smell, I thought of my favorite sunflower dress to wear. The length went below my knees and it had two straps on each shoulder. The base color of my dress was pure white cotton material with medium sunflowers patterns around the bottom. I chose my flat flip-flop scandals and brushed my hair into a ponytail with a white ribbon tied in a bow. At that moment in my life, I felt like a beautiful young lady. As I stood in front of the mirror admiring myself, a loud knock rattle from the other side of my bedroom door. I opened the door, and there stood my sisters and brothers with the excitement of “Happy Birthday” roaring off their tongues. My eyes began to fill with tears just knowing that my family was as excited as I was about my special day. We all decided to run...

The Story Behind the Moon Cakes of Beijing

...the unique Beijing-style moon cakes have satisfied the taste buds(味蕾) of locals for generations. They may not look as fancy as Cantonese-style moon cakes, but the Beijing versions have their own unique features. The handmade, hard-crusted moon cakes are made of rock sugar, walnut kernels(核桃仁), pumpkin seeds(南瓜子) and qinghongsi(青红丝), or candied tangerine peel(陈皮) slices. "The most popular ones among Beijingers are zilaihong and zilaibai. Zilaihong uses red sugar in the dough, while zilaibai uses white sugar. The taste is simple but pure," said Chi Xiangdong, former Owner of Dao Xiang Cun. And there’s an interesting story behind zilaibai and zilaihong. Legend has that long ago a serious plague hit Beijing. To help the sick people, Chang’e the mythical Moon Goddess sent her servant the Jade Rabbit, which made two kinds of medicine, one red and one white. The medicine gradually evolved into zilaibai and zilaihong moon cakes, which preserved the red and white colors. Although it’s just a legend, ever since then, zilaibai and zilaihong moon cakes have always been linked to rabbits. "It’s actually a kind of toy for the kids, but it evokes memories from the past and definitely adds more fun to the festival," Chi Xiangdong said. Now, with more variations of moon cakes on the market, traditional Beijing moon cakes have begun to fade from public view. However, for some, the memories the cakes represent are the most precious. "When I was a boy, I always...

...very appealing to the eye, and marketing use this color’s attractiveness as an advantage. All of these ads have a strong use of pathos and ethos, they use stuff and persons with an important well known background, like the Einstein picture, who is famous for his energy theories and they took a good advantage of that, and by adding a little humor they can get more attention. The way they are fighting the war against France is pretty much as trying to make them look more important than France itself, like if France is lost and its dependant from Red Bull. By making war to France, they are getting more fame. All of these pictures contain black and white to make the viewer see the Red Bull drink better than the ad, that way they can know what is first, and then will focus their attention into the picture. Also, they are in black and white because they are telling you how boring everything is without Red Bull, and the drink Red Bull is in its colors blue, red, and silver, meaning that if you drink Red Bull your day will brighten up. In the picture with the old man is lifting into the air with his bicycle, there is other people in the background, and they are still in the ground, they cannot fly, because they don’t have Red Bull. So if you don’t get Red Bull you can’t fly and everyone loves flying, which is the background meaning for energy. They used an old man for this ad to represent that no matter what age you are, you can always get lots of energy. ...

The Effect of Light in the Growth of Plant

...other light is available. Artificial lights allow regular people to plant whole gardens in places where no plant would ordinarily grow. Which Is the Better Colour

...Which is the better colour, black or white? Colour is known as the ‘fill’ of objects, environment and even the skin of some people around us. It is defined as a visual sensation differing with wavelengths which results from the light that they may emit or transmit. My question is; ‘which is the better colour out of black or white?’ Black may not be considered a colour while white might and vice versa; however the attractiveness and appeal of these two ‘colours’ to those who perceive it is my main focus. Regardless of which colour is more suitable to a person’s standards; I am answering this question by thoroughly comparing the two different colours and will attempt to reach a conclusion of which is the dominant colour. First off I will start with the colour black. Black is normally affiliated with feelings of depression which can be reflected through various things such as accessories or clothing. Black can cause powerful feelings of isolation and imply an inconspicuous nature of somebody who is wearing all black so they are not recognised. Black is a pure colour; the opposite of colours filled with vibrancy and passion and contains a much more direct approach. When black is worn, it can be perceived as sophisticated e.g. a person in an all-black suit for work or rebellious e.g. the common teenage punk rock attire. The colour black is known to stimulate an atmosphere of mysteriousness due to the secretive nature of the colour. Black is the most common colour in sophisticated...

...ACA 122 Advertisements and Your Health I discovered that after watching a commercial for Victoria’s Secret that I had to have their newest bra. In my opinion, the bra looked very sexy and would definitely impress my husband. When the model looked into the camera, it was as if she was speaking directly to me. I had to have this bra in the exact black and white color she was wearing. I wanted to look sexy and be confident just like the girl in the advertisement. Many of my bras come from Victoria’s Secret so I had no problem running into the store to make this particular purchase. I was so confident that I didn’t even bother to try it out before leaving the store. When I put this bra on to go out on a date with my husband I was in shock! It was the worst bra I have ever felt in my life. The straps cut down into my shoulders leaving painful red marks. I could also feel the underwire cutting into my skin. I am currently using a fade cream to get rid of the scars that the bra left behind. I intend to continue to shop at Victoria’s Secret but I will not assume that all their products are good just because some model appears to sexy and comfortable. I will not let a model trick me into thinking that a product is right for me just because of the way it looks. The bra probably left her in pain just as it did me. The only difference is that she got paid to suffer and I didn’t. I also intend to try on every bra that I purchase before leaving the store. In the future...

White Whale

...color white. Because of this imagery, the formalist criticism can be used to further analyze the text. Formalism analyzes texts under the assumption that we will only understand a text within the writing’s own form. The imagery of the “whiteness of the whale” consumes the entire 42nd chapter of Moby Dick. Because white, in many cultures, is associated with beauty and goodness, Melville talks about the images of white marbles and pearls and how the whiteness these objects make them more desirable. Not only does white depict beauty but it is also a symbol of power and dominance. For example Melville refers to the color white as the “imperial color”, mentioning white man’s dominance over “every dusky tribe”. To further illustrate the “goodness” of whiteness Melville relates the color to the “innocence of brides”, and the divineness of the wild white horse. Another attribute Melville associates with whiteness is “holiness”, mentioning that all priests wear. The color white symbolizes many different positive characteristics throughout this chapter. Melville mentions the association between this color and traits like innocence, purity, and goodness. Immediately after discussing the goodness of whiteness, he identifies that the color can also have a negative connotation. The color white also serves as a serious contradiction in itself as it makes things that are awful and evil in nature seem pure and righteous. For example in animals such as the white shark...

...it all together. I went to a local store and bought a 20 x 24 canvas, some fan brush and the acrylic paint necessary to express the fall colors I see in my imagination. I put a lot of thought into what colors I want to incorporate into my painting to express the dark and gloomy. The color black immediately popped into mind. I started to paint my entire 20 x 24 canvas with a thick layer of black acrylic paint and set it aside for 24 hours to dry. While waiting for the layer of black acrylic paint to dry, I thought about what colors I wanted to use to express warm and bright on a dark and gloomy background. I thought of the bright orange leaves against gray gloomy sky and came up with a bright orange red to represent the leaves and an off white color to represent the gray gloomy sky. From this point on I had to come up with an idea to put the two acrylic paint colors on this black background to make it look randomly scattered. I started a test run on black...
