Also, Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding (1988) asked young students to record their time outside of class and time reading correlated to many aspects of reading achievement, and included vocabulary and comprehension (Greaney 1980). Rice (1997) also found that adults who reported reading more had superior levels of vocabulary. However, Krashen (1985, 1989) himself has cautioned that the Input Hypothesis may not be the only way learning is occurring and this fits within the framework of the study proposed. In learning environments all over the world the use of the English language as the medium of instruction is very common and increasing (Graddol 2006). This puts many schools in a situation where books and materials are not in the native language, but in English. This creates a circumstance where English reading skills, both vocabulary and reading speed become very important. This means that most students that are using and learning in English are at a high intermediate or advanced level (see section on Reading Fluency for more). Irvine (2011) asked Swedish university students taking classes taught in English about their experiences with English Textbooks.
