“Whoever You Want to Be” “You are Asian, so go study,” “You are black, try that sport,” “Hey White, don’t be racist just go to parties,” “Hey Mexican, can you get some drugs for me?” This is the reality of society. We say racism is gone, but this is how we view each race and define each race. In fact, this is the reality of how each race of child is influenced and raised. Racism still exists not because we haven’t talked enough about it, but because we never try to change it. Likewise, born in a foreign country, I faced this unchangeable problem as an international student with different views. Also through these diverse experiences I came to frame my identity racially and personally throughout my life. “Hey, is racism harsh in America?” “How fast are black people? Do they actually carry guns?” These are questions that I was asked when I went back to Korea this summer. Unfortunately, Internet is a huge network nowadays and it affects everyone in the world. Those questions were not randomly asked, but because that is what people see in movies and news reports. Most racial stereotypes are framed according to what is in the media, the reason they are constructed. For example, recently there was a huge issue in Texas about a 14 year old Muslim genius boy who was arrested because his invention, a homemade clock, was assumed to be a bomb by the teacher. He was arrested and handcuffed because he was a Muslim. I doubt this would have happened if it were another race. Looking at this phenomenon, no one can deny that personal identity and race identity are both consciously and unconsciously created in this society. Likewise, I cannot deny the fact that I am viewed as a smart Asian who studies 24 hours and does not do anything else. However, unfortunately my personal life is not far away from the stereotypes that people have about Asian. Asian actually value education more than anything else. It is because education has been important for Asian for a long time. My life in Korea was just like the stereotype of Asians. I was forced to study most of my days and was told that best colleges are the first step to a successful life. In fact, most of Asians who study abroad are told that our goals in America is to get into a good college and in order to receive a better education for a better job. This is ironic because stereotypes are not always just made up. I was personally influenced and shaped through environmental pressure without having a chance to expand my dream. Still and in the future I will be told of this until I become the next Bill Gates. I was raised as a “typical” Asian family and most Asians are; therefore, unfortunately, I cannot deny the fact that many Asians are somewhat obsessed with grades and studying. However, when I came to college and saw many different races and collaborated with them, my racial identity and thoughts were changed. Also after reading about Obama’s life and how he overcame the racial identity, I saw a possibility of change in this world. I realized that challenging myself and trying new things despite my race, like Obama did in the book, is what changes the world. Now I try to face racism and show that I as an Asians can perhaps love sports more than black people (and also be better). I came to realize words and Stereotypes are just unconscious situations in which I framed myself that form people’s view of myself. Race, Color, identity are words that have definitive definitions in this world; however these words are similar in that they are defined by the views of humankind. Race, color, and identity are things created by people of this word. If a society defines one of these words differently, that becomes the definition of the word. An object contains all colors, and its apparent color is just what it reflects; therefore in reality every object contains all colors. Identity can always change according to one’s behavior. These words are just words describing how people view one; they are not who one is. Looking at people like Obama makes me think that maybe one day, the definition of identity will be defined “whoever you want to be.”

Who Is The Father Gabriel's Decision

...Gabriel’s or Rodrigo’s, is the better one? Objection 1: Father Gabriel’s decision was the better decision because he was following the example of Jesus Christ who said, “Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:24-25). Objection 2: Father Gabriel’s decision was the better decision because violence is essentially an impersonal and wordless solution. Violent behavior is usually used to achieve something by force or to punish or get rid of a person instead of coming “face to face” with them. We will never conquer the enemy “by force of arms, by the bullet...

Success in Islam

...is possible for those who look to God, the Quran and the authentic traditions of Prophet Muhammad for guidance. Success is easily attainable and today we will discuss a few ways that we can achieve success in this life and secure the ultimate success. Righteousness The Prophet Muhammad left us with a very good working definition of righteousness. He said, “…Righteousness is that with which the soul is tranquil and the heart is tranquil, but sin is that which rouses suspicion in the soul and is perplexing in the breast, even if people give you a decision in its favour.”[1] One of the things that we as human being define as success is the ability to sleep well at night, to live with a clear conscience and here we see that righteousness provides this. Righteousness includes following the commandments of God, striving to do all acts of worship including prayer, charity and fasting with a good intention and a sincere heart. “Whoever works righteousness — whether male or female — while he (or she) is a true believer verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter).” (Quran 16:97) Kindness A true believer is known for his or her kind demeanour. They strive to see the good in everything and everyone. They are the first to give from that which they love to those less fortunate or in need. A believer...

The Meaning of Life

...at a higher level in school and some students will go to extreme lengths to just get a decent grade. As you well know academic honesty is a big thing when completing assignments and test in college. But honesty comes down to the core of who we are, from are family’s to are work place. It creates an invisible untrustworthy factor between the student and professor. It basically comes down to cheating, which means to use another person’s ideas or answers for your own. It’s also known as intellectual theft. Academic honesty is not a victimless crime, and you may wonder why, but it has many factors. Taking credit for something that isn’t yours or stealing it can actually put you in jail. Students these days have a lot of pressure on them, which causes them to resort to desperate measures. Some other reasons is because they lack the knowledge or skill for the course or they are just plain lazy. One last thing is that they didn’t even know they were cheating at all because they didn’t use proper citation. One thing I have learned from this article is that, I didn’t know it was as widespread as I initially thought, which really surprised me. The conclusions of the article are extremely accurate when compared to other course material, because you should just be academically honest throughout your educational journey. One bible verse that comes to mind is (Proverbs 10:9) “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out”. A couple things...

...preacher, the government to tell anyone they have no right to marry the person they love? Who I love shouldn’t matter to anyone I’m not killing anybody I’m not living for them but for myself. As a lesbian woman I have rights just like heterosexual woman so why should I be denied to marry the woman I love? They are so much other things going on in the world but politicians are worrying about gays and lesbians being legally able to marry. Bishops and preachers are worried about the bible but no one follows the ten commandants and no sin is greater than the next sin. Heterosexual couples have the right to marry whoever they want, what makes a heterosexual couple more entitles than homosexual couples to exercise their right to marry. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, if that is so true why are the government keep denying my rights to marry who ever I want. You have grown people with power telling other grown people telling them they can’t do something that pertain to their own life. America can tolerate parents going free from killing their daughter, and a murderer going free from killing an unarm teenager, but can’t tolerate seeing two people love each other. Now that’s sick! Finance

...many different Bible verses that talked about finances, I came across one in Ecclesiastes 5:10 that really stood out to me. It states, “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless (Ecclesiastes 5:10, New International Version).” This verse simply means that it is in our human nature to want more than what we have. Unfortunately, our society is consumed with money and wealth. There is nothing wrong with having money, but once it starts consuming your life, it becomes a problem. The saying “money doesn’t buy happiness” is probably one of the most accurate statements that have ever been made. People will start to make money an idol in their lives and this affects their relationship with God. God wants us to enjoy the things of this world, but once we start to put it above him, he will just take it away. This has become a problem in my own life. My whole life my family has supported me and paid for everything. This past year I got a job and started taking on a whole load of new responsibilities. I no longer rely on my parents for money because I have a job that helps support me every month. Although I am only making car payments, paying for food, and gas, I have been stressing out and putting too much of a focus on money. I work a minimum wage job and sometimes I want to add another job, on top of school, so I can earn more money. I know I have the rest of my life to work and I need to relax and focus...

New Testament Controversy

...mean, and how we should interpret it. You can say it is like a lesson study, which helps people who are confused. | Decrypting the Encrypted | The Bible contains many controversial verses in it. This does not mean that they are not the truth. Today we are going to examine the context of five controversial Bible verses in order to see what is actually being said, either metaphorically, allegorically or literally. Before you continue reading all the verses are quoted from the NIV. * Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” Does Jesus really mean that we should hate our parents, our siblings, and our children? What is He saying? Jesus was speaking to the crowd about discipleship. He was stressing the importance of putting God first above everyone, including family. Humans have a tendency to idolize their family and so he was saying that anyone that would become Jesus’ disciple must count the cost and it is supremely high and if a believer is to trust in Christ, they should renounce everyone and everything for His sake, even family. When Jesus was speaking to the crowd one man told him that his mother and brothers wanted to see Him but Jesus said “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven...

Calvinism vs Arminianism

...sovereignty of God, the depravity of humankind, and the doctrine of predestination.” -Merriam-Webster Dictionary John Calvin was a great reformation theologian who lived from 1509-1564. “The system of Calvinism adheres to a very high view of scripture and seeks to derive its theological formulations based solely on God’s word. It focuses on God’s sovereignty, stating that God is able and willing by virtue of his omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence, to do whatever He desires with His creation. It also maintains that within the Bible are the following teachings: That God, by his sovereign grace predestines people into salvation; that Jesus died only for those predestined; that God regenerates the individual where he is then able and wants to choose God; and that it is impossible for those who are redeemed to lose their salvation.” (Slick) Calvinism has five points which can be known by this acronym: T.U.L.I.P....

The Gospel Of John Research Paper

...Introduction In John’s Gospel, John provides clear evidence that Jesus is the Son of God and that by believing in Him believers in Christ may have eternal life. In the Gospel of John, it is easily discovered that John discusses the issue of sin compared to the other Gospels. John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Therefore, John makes it very clear that unless sin is cleansed through faith in Jesus Christ, people will perish eternally. Thusly, this scripture illustrates the ultimate demonstration of God’s love for believers by giving the gift of eternal life through the sacrifice and resurrection of His only Son, Jesus Christ. Further, despite there being a final judgement in the future, eternal life is in the preset-tense. For example, in John 5:24 Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my words and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to...

Servant Leadership

...servant leader, we must first take a look at its modern day origin and definition. The phrase “Servant Leadership” was originally coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as Leader, an essay that he first published in 1970. In that essay, he said: “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first; perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature” (Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, 2012). Though the term servant leadership is a modern phrasing, the concept is derived from a biblical perspective that Jesus exemplified in his life and ministry. Jesus, in Matthew 20:26-28 says it very succinctly, "You have observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It is not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be...

Argumentative Essay: Should Community College Be Free?

...I believe that community college shouldn’t be free because there's already a way in which someone doesn't have to pay for tuition, the pell grants basically covers your tuition and more, and there’s going to be a lot of competition because students varying from low income to upper & middle class. Making college free sounds like a good idea, who wouldn't want to go to college and pay nothing? The idea can benefit a lot of people, but there's no need for it to be free because according to Felipe Bezerra, a student at Rio Hondo College, “about half of the state's community college students qualify for those waivers.” It wouldn't really make a difference to many students because a lot of them are going to have their tuition covered by fee waivers. They're going to realize that they went through some hassle to not pay for tuition, when at the end, it ended up being...

Why Does Evil Still Exist

...God is considered to be the supreme good, the ideal model of perfection. Then why does evil still exist? The bible states that God did not create the world in the idea of evil, even though he had knowledge of it. It was a man who brought upon evil through only serving the needs of himself discouraging away from God. When God created man and the woman he did not intend for them to be corrupted by evil as they were made from his image. For example, Adam and Eve were both created in Gods image and were seen as perfect and pure until they disobeyed God and intended to their own desires. By eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This demonstrates that God is not the creator of evil for it is man's selfish ways, which brought...

Human Sexuality

...heterosexual couples. I am someone who has always believed that everyone should have the same rights no matter what regardless of sexuality. I have had many homosexual friends and I always sympathized with the social stigma that they would have on them, and that was back when I was I guess you could say I was straight back then. So even way before I found myself having to deal with the same dilemmas as my friends I thought that keeping simple rights from people was wrong. I guess you could say I was an advocate in the war against social stigmas, advocating for equal rights for everyone no matter what sexual orientation one is. Homosexuality has been a topic of debate for some time now. There are people that firmly believe that loving or engaging in sex with someone of the same gender is completely wrong, and some of these people base their beliefs on their religious path. Some preach that by doing so the people involved in these acts will go to hell. There are even some individuals out there that form or part of groups that protest homosexuality and same sex relationships. My question to them is simple. What would you do if it was your child? What would you do if it was you who felt like that? Would you want the same rights in your life and in your relationship as everyone else? The answers to these questions are complicated for some people. To me they are really simple. There are family’s that disown their children for being with someone of their same gender. There are people that deny...
