Formal/Informal Learning Essay 1

...years, between grade school and high school and now as an adult still trying to finish my undergraduate degree 10 years after I started it, I find that I’m the type of learner that must be interested in the topic or have a purpose for completing the class. Ever since I was a little girl, I was surrounded by distractions in my life that didn’t allow for me to properly focus on school. I was always able to complete the bare minimum to get by, but never really applied myself to my course studies, unless it was something that I was completely interested in. Studies that, looking back, actually allowed for my brain to rest from the chaotic life it dealt with outside of the classroom. Growing up I always enjoyed the extra-curricular activities as opposed to the general requirements, for example English and History, Economics and Government. Because I struggled with being able to focus while in school, I feel today as an adult I suffer from not knowing about some of the key elements to life. And even though today I realize not knowing these things hinders me at times, I still tend to not have a desire to pursue them to better understand. And the reason for this, are the distractions in my life today. I’ve recognized a pattern in my childhood and in my adulthood and rather than taking responsibility, and taking time out of my busy life to learn and grow as an adult I chose to make excuses. I chose to delay educating myself in these areas that are just as important as the areas I chose...

Persuasive Essay For High School

...As we grow up people expect us to just know what we’re going to be as adults. What we are going to do when you grow up, How we’re going to act like grown-ups. But they never actually teach us how to be grown-ups. High School's should be focusing on more important classes such as teaching us how to do our own taxes, how to keep our credit score up, how to save. Instead, once we learn algebra, algebra two, geometry we have to continue on with pre-Calc and other things we may not even need to know for our future occupations. I think the school board should add classes that teach us basic life skills we will need as adults. Our high school curriculum should just add classes like that into our daily schedules. Or allow students to choose if they...

Why College Is Important

...Assignment 1 “Why college education is important to me” Achieving Academic Excellence February 6th, 2014 The purpose of this essay is to show the importance of a college education and to provide many reasons why a college education would be important to me. I will incorporate a few quoted references along with some statistical data and my personal opinion. About twenty years ago I couldn’t give an answer to “why college is important to me”. I did enroll in a college and lasted about three semesters. I didn’t do well in many of my classes because I had poor study habits, lacked maturity, was never really focused, and just didn’t have any real motivation and goals set for myself. I never really gave it much thought. The point is I just didn’t take advantage of what college would mean to me and to my future. I wanted to enter the work force right away because I thought that I could land a good job without a college education. After fifteen years of doing different jobs and not making enough money to support a family on my own, I was finally at a crossroads. What am I going to do with my life? Do I continue to struggle? Those were really good questions. I realized that it wasn’t possible to land good jobs without better knowledge and the only way possible is to go back to school. I did some soul searching and came to the conclusion that if I am going to achieve something in this life and qualify for many positions then I must go back to college and work very hard for a degree...

Dating, Friendship, and Cliques

...Cliques, Friendship & Dating Cliques As a teenager, having a social life takes major precedence in shaping other people’s perceptions of an identity or even the light that they see themselves in. Often times, people make judgements about a person's value based on the type of friends they have. Our friends are a great support system in such a transitional part of our lives. We laugh alongside them, as well as suffer losses together. Most times our friendships are a positive aspect of how we define ourselves, but when friends become exclusive, it can seriously hurt those being left out. A clique is a group of friends that excludes certain people in a purposeful manner. There may be one or two controlling members who influence the rest of the group. This type of peer pressure can cause people to act differently or behave in an uncharacteristic manner. These actions can stem from insecurities or the desire to gain popularity. People feel more powerful by putting others down, but deep down it doesn’t help to tear down the self-confidence and respect of another. (Coping With Cliques 2). Girls have a tendency to form cliques more frequently than boys, but all members of a social community are affected by this kind of behavior. Often times teens will feel trapped in a clique or be afraid that if they speak up to stop things, the group will turn on them next. They take a passive approach to the situation in order to avoid being a victim. However, there is no true sense of belonging...
