William Apess was born in 1798 and was multi-racial, having American Indian, European, and African American heritage. He became an indentured servant at the age of 5 and worked for a family of white farmers, this family ensured that William received an education. In “An Indian’s Looking-Glass for the White Man” he stated his belief that the white man and Indian were equals and would be judged by God on their righteousness, not the color of their skin. He addressed the need for the removal of prejudice and the promotion of it towards the Indian people. Throughout the essay William takes issue with the treatment and hijacking of the Indian peoples rights, land and freedom. William points out that even those who would befriend the Indian peoples
