...Cathy Hoos February 23, 2014 Deviance, Crime and Social Control ASSIGNMENT 8A Briefly describe an act of deviance (one that is not illegal) that you have observed. Explain why you consider this behavior to be deviant. How do we punish individuals who engage in this behavior? The act of deviance that I observed and one that still stands out in my mind today occurred back in 1993. I was a Jazzercise instructor teaching classes at a facility in New Jersey. Jazzercise is a choreographed exercise program that attracts mostly women. I had been teaching at this facility for several months and had a nice sized clientele, all of which were women. One night a gentleman arrived at class and signed up for a session. He did take me by surprise, seeing as I had only women customers at that point, although I knew of other classes in the area that had men on their clientele list. Anyway, Michael enjoyed the class and was coming regularly; no outstanding differences were noticed at that point. As time went on though, he started arriving wearing women’s leotards and spandex tights. He also had his nails nicely manicured and was wearing makeup. This was definitely a deviant behavior in my eyes, because he violated the standards of expectations in this situation and went against social norms. When he first arrived, he was wearing a t-shirt and shorts to work out in. As he seemed to get more comfortable with the group, that’s when we started to notice the change. It was gradual...

...truck driver for Winn-Dixie Stores and a twenty-year employee, had an impeccable and unblemished work record.61 He was punctual, trustworthy, and an exceptionally productive employee. Most co-workers viewed him as an asset to the organization. But none of that appeared to matter when Oiler was fired. The reason: Oiler was a cross-dresser. On his own time, Oiler changed his persona, becoming Donna, complete with wearing women's clothing, a wig, and makeup. Frequently out in public with his wife—in restaurants, at church—Donna maintained a dignified public appearance, bothering no one, and simply went on with his personal life as he chose. Management at Winn-Dixie, however, saw things differently. Shortly after they learned of his cross-dressing behavior, Oiler was fired. This happened in spite of the realization that his out-of-work behavior had absolutely no adverse effect on his job performance. Rather, Winn-Dixie's position was that if he was seen in public by someone who recognized him as a Winn-Dixie employee, the company's image could be damaged. Oiler sued the company for wrongfully terminating him on the basis of sex discrimination. He claimed that cross-dressing was nothing more than his “not conforming to gender stereotype as a man.” During the trial, records reinforced that there was not one shred of evidence that any of Oiler's out-of-work activities affected his ability to work. Nonetheless, the court ruled in Winn-Dixie's favor, citing that there are no federal or state laws that protect the rights of “transgendered” employees. Although Winn-Dixie won at the trial, they experienced an...

...threatened. I feel that the decision to fire Oiler was based off of someone’s personal feelings towards Oiler being a cross dresser which is very unprofessional, a company should not fire anyone based on personal feelings but instead on how could this effect the company. On the clock Oiler was a very professional employee for twenty years. Not only was Oiler’s employee rights violated but his civil rights also. The seventh Amendment to the civil rights act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in hiring based on sex, religion, and national origin. The Fifth Amendment has an explicit requirement that the federal government not deprive any individual of life, liberty, or property without due process of the law. By firing Oiler for cross dressing is depriving him of living his life in which I do not believe that companies should legally be able to fire employee’s for this or any other action that is personally done outside of the work place. 2) Some of the consequences I see for companies that punish employees for certain off the job behaviors are many law suits especially if the behaviors have absolutely nothing to do with the company. There are many things that could happen to employers who practice this, one example is as seen in...

...revolution in 30 years, the restaurant chain will introduce the grilled chicken salad at 1,235 of its branches with a choice of Caesar dressing, or the lighter option of a drizzle of balsamic. However, anyone hoping the salad option will help battle the bulge should read the nutritional information on the McDonald's website. It shows that ditching the burger for a salad is no good for slimmers. For with dressing and croutons it contains 425 calories and 21.4g of fat, compared with the 253 calories and 7.7g of fat in the standard burger. Adding a portion of fries to your burger brings the calorie count to 459 - still less fatty than the salad at 16.7g. Super-sized portions ditched Last month McDonald's announced it will ditch its super-size portion of fries and soft drinks at British outlets by the end of the year, amid a backlash against firms blamed for a an "obesity epidemic". Medical experts have drawn a direct link between increasing obesity and giant portions of everything from fast food to chocolate bars and crisps. A super-size portion of fries at McDonald's contains 486 calories, more than double the 206 calories in a regular serving. McDonald's said of its salad that without the creamy dressing and croutons, the fat falls away and the less calorific balsamic vinegar dressing contains just 2g of fat. A spokeswoman added: "Free of dressing a chicken salad has only 222 calories. It's the Italian cheese that makes the difference". Read more: http://www.dailymail.co...

Crossdressing and the One Sex Model

...Bernhard Werner Cross-Dressing in Early Modern Drama and Prose September 11, 2012 The One Sex Model and Cross Dressing: “Assaulted and Pursued Chastity” “Behind every great man there’s a great woman”. If we had to define the term ‘’early modern’’, it would sure be a task that would not be easy to solve. The most of us would clearly try to define this term with the answer; everything that has not been written in old English can be seen as modern. But as it is often the case, the devil is in the details, and we have to take a closer look at other aspects that could lead us to the answer. We could for example ask ourselves in which time period we should categorize the early modern era. This is the parting of the ways, but we can set a round figure if we put our focus on the time after the late middle age, from 1500 to 1800. During this period of time people were not only developing there sense for new, and for that time unknown things, such as the human body but also evolving theories and a new philosophies of how fundamental things should work in society. At this point it might be the case that the question of what this facts have to do with cross dressing, could occur. As mentioned before, medical researches evolved, and people came up with new theories in order to form a so called standard for a society. A society that we can surely now categorize as one with somehow artifice moral values. One of these Theories is the “one-sex model” or “one-sex theory”. In this...

...Name: Ali Almas Student Number: S00155721 Apprentice Ireland 2010 Experiential Marketing Apprentice Ireland 2010 Experiential Marketing Q1: identify and discuss any organisational issues within each team which you feel merits discussion. (These issues can be negative or positive or indeed a mixture of both). One issue that arises in Niamh team is when her team members suggest two ideas, first was of a juggler who will juggle and the second idea was of a model dressed in bikinis with a large snake. When Niamh is informed about these ideas, she agrees on the juggler but when she hears the idea of the model dressed in bikinis she straight away says no to that idea. This is where I see that Niamh has good perception skills because she knew that people were needed to be kept happy because the managers from her brands were going to visit this event, so that’s why she agreed on this idea. At the event we do see that the juggler is entertaining people and nobody complained about the juggler. The moment Niamh hears the idea of a model dressed in bikinis she gave a false expression and then says no to this idea, even though her team said that she made a bad decision. It would have looked cool and would have been a centre piece plus her team said that she was playing it too safe but Niamh rejects this idea. In my opinion I think that Niamh made a good decision of rejecting the model idea because she has to percept each idea as to what effect will it have on all...

Glasgow 5th of March

...With a ragged diamond of plate glass.” The first two lines of the poem appeals to the reader a metaphor “ragged diamond.” The use of the word ragged to describe the glass suggests something broken or torn. The second image is of “a young man and his girl falling backwards into a shop-window.” This is written in the present tense. The reason for this is to create a sense of immediacy. This gives the reader a sense of almost being a witness to this event. The next image in the poem is a violent one “The young man’s face is bristling with fragments of glass” it is as if the man has a beard made of glass. The use of the word “bristling” shows us that the man has fragments of glass puncturing his face. The reader is then left to wonder how the glass came to be stuck to his face. The comparison with a beard is deliberately ironic and shocking. “and the girl’s leg has caught on the broken window” The poet’s choice of words is very important here. “Caught” suggests something that has trapped the girls leg is trapped by the shattered plate glass and she is probably seriously injured. The poet draws even more attention to the violent detail, “And spurts arterial blood over her wet-look white coat. The poet used both sound imagery “spurts”, and visual imagery. The implication of the bloods colour is suggested by the word arterial. Clearly an artery has been cut which puts the girl in grave danger. “ This contrast with the white coat again drawing attention the blood...
