Worst News Ever
I started noticing my dad’s facial color turning pale from his regular white color the week before finals week last semester. I did not think anything of this because he has on going health problems so I just assumed it had to do with that. I kept to my normal routine of going to school, wrestling practice, doing my homework, and wrestling on the weekends at the tournaments. Right as I pulled into the parking lot at WHCCL so I could take my Math 15 final, I get a text from my sister telling me to go home right when I get done taking my final. Which to me was really suspicious because she never before texted me to tell me to go home right after my class. I called my mom immediately once I got out of class because she texted me telling me to call her. That is when I got hit with the horrible news! My dad was in the hospital in Coalinga because he had a pre-stroke while he was working. Once I heard that from my mom, I immediately ran to my car and sped back home to Coalinga. I called my mom when I was about two miles away from the hospital when she told me “I and your dad are at Doctor Apodaceas office because all the tests they ran on him at the emergency room came back negative and Dr. Apodacea (our family doctor) wanted to see him so for me just to go home there till they got home.” When she told me that it was as if a semi-truck had been lifted off of my shoulders with relief that my dad was okay. I waited about fifteen minutes for them to get home. Once they got home I gave my dad a big hug. I had a feeling things were still bad with my dad’s health, because he had a super worried look on his that I have only saw when my grandma Maria was on life support two different occasions and when his father Angel was emitted to the hospital for his pacemaker having malfunctions. I asked him how he was

American Dream

...of knowing my family is still in Haiti is the worst pain I have ever felt. It’s worse than the sores on my hands from the splinters of my rake, even worse than the beatings and burns I got from the Haiti officials.  This (ms mac said identify) is by far the worst pain I have ever felt in my life.             While I was in Haiti, I befriended the American missionaries; I had no idea of the price I would pay because of our friendship.  After attackers dragged me out of my house and beat  me almost to death, they proceeded in burning my face to give me the mark of a traitor.  The next day the U. S. Coastguard found me almost dead.  They took me out of Haiti and brought me to America.  This would be wonderful if only I had my wife and three children here with me. It has been six long, lonely years since I have seen them.  The first month in this new country I used a borrowed lawnmower to cut a neighbor’s grass.  The people around town started asking me to do the same for them.  When I made enough money, I bought a new lawnmower and gave it  to the man who had let me borrow his; it was my way of saying thank you.  Even though I send most of the money I make back to my family, I did manage to save up enough for a used truck.  With the truck came new opportunities, which widened the range of lawns I could mow.  When winter came, my small mowing operation became obsolete.  I found myself looking in the newspaper for new jobs.  I asked myself, “Who will hire an illegal Haitian immigrant...

Domestic Violence Persuasive Speech

...Have you ever been suspicious about something and then just dismissed it because you were probably overlooking it? Have you ever felt guilty because you were so oblivious to something that shouldn’t have been ignored? Domestic violence is one of the most serious crimes in the world because it is so hard to get away from it, if your younger then 18 you can’t leave home without your parent’s consent and if it is your parent abusing you then its close to impossible to get away. Many people who go through domestic violence are embarrassed because the people that should be there for them and protect them are the ones that are making their life a living hell. The fact that it is so serious and common should be a warning signal but people don’t realise that it could be happening to their friends or family, they don’t realise it is all around them because it isn’t happening to them. I wish I was more observant, I so desperately want everything to go back to the way they were before, but take backs and do overs aren’t real and no matter how much I try she is never coming back. You are probably wondering what I am...

Children

...Through many generations, there’s always a group that is shunned upon and misunderstood, the children. I’m sure you’ve heard your parents say things about this generation being worse than the past and your grandparents saying your generation is even WORSE than your parent’s. This is a never-ending cycle due to technologic and commodity increase over the years. You’ve obviously heard your dad tell you in his days he had to read books or newspapers to get information, and brag about you having it so easy and how it makes you lazy. Sadly, this current generation will most certainly fall on the same path as the previous ones, yes you will tell your children that back in your days things were different, yes you will get mad at their behavior, and yes things will remain the same forever. Now, there are always people collectively saying these previous things are legitimate and that child behavior has been progressively worse(which would mean we should be demons by now), this same exaggeration is the one that makes it FEEL like children have gotten progressively worse. We as human beings notice things, and we are bound to pay more attention to the bad than to the good, reason being that we were made to solve problems. This also comes at a cost though, since we are very observant to problems this means there will undoubtedly be problems we just can’t or are hard to fix. If we can’t fix something we feel disgusted, we feel mad; these feelings are what makes us have to take those problems...

Personal Narrative: My First Experience With Abusive Relationships

...My first encounter with an abusive relationship was at the tender age of nine. I had lived with my grandparents ever since I was born due to my mother being very young and devastated because the person she thought would be her one true love for the rest of her life had left her without a trace of why or where to. Therefore, my grandma was the person who took care of me since birth. She taught me from a very young age that love was the most important thing in the world and so that is what I believed. But that was all about to change. After nine years, my mom found someone else and we were all extremely happy for her! She seemed more motivated in life and overall happier. She began spending time with me and I really enjoyed being around her. Overtime we got closer and learned more and more about each other. It was nice to have someone else there for me apart from my grandparents. But I had no idea what was coming. On February 2009, my mom announced to the family that she was pregnant. My grandparents looked worried but nevertheless they congratulated her and told her they would be there for whatever she needed. My mom followed by telling them that she was planning on moving in with her boyfriend and starting the family she had...

...build an artificial, straight channel that was much larger than the normal flow of the river.  The channel was extra-large to allow it to take the biggest flows that would occur during very severe rainfalls.  The channel was made as straight as possible so that the water could move away from the area as fast as possible. This did not work and flooding was made worse. Unfortunately, it was found that moving more water faster only made the flooding far worse downstream.  This often resulted in ever bigger channels having to be built, at ever increasing costs. 2.What do these channels look like? (Paste in some pictures!) The channel has been straightened using methods such as putting fences up and using concrete to keep the channel flowing in a straight line. This has resulted in the death of the river; this is where dangerous and ugly materials are used. The width varies from about 1m to several metres. 3.What are the problems with this approach? Unfortunately, it was found that moving more water faster only made the flooding far worse downstream.  This often resulted in ever bigger channels having to be built, at ever increasing costs.  Ironically, channelizing is now often blamed for some of the worst flooding caused by rivers. This approach is an eyesore to the public and is very dangerous towards small children who could fall into the river and potentially hurt themselves. This also affects the wildlife, e.g. fish, because plants will no longer grow on the bed of the...

...tJacobi Benoit Alex Linden English 101 8/26/14 Crime In New Orleans Growing up in New Orleans, I have seen a lot. On January 10,2008 my view on crime in New Orleans changed. I remember being at one of my classmates birthday party. We were all having a good time at this teem club. We were all dancing, drinking, and having fun. After about two hours there was a fight. It was one of my friends and some other boys. Everybody got scared and started running. The club owner began to push us. Any person who was around the fight and in it got pushed out of the club. That included me. All you heard was big boom. That was the door slamming. When he shut the door there were about fifteen of us left outside. So many people were running downing the street screaming as the fight continued. I ran and hid behind a pay phone. The pay phone was only a few feet away from the fight. Breathing hard, afraid to go any other way. Within five minutes the fight was over. Then were gun shots. Pow , pow, pow ,pow, pow, and pow. My eyes were closed. When I opened them I could see my friend face down. He was shot down multiple times. All I heard was a car that sped off. After the gun shots, stopped the club owner open the door. So many people ran out. We were all crying and screaming. “Call the police”. “Somebody help him”. I was terrified. My hands, legs, and feet were trembling. After about twenty minutes the police and ambulance arrived. So many people were at the crime scene. Just hurt by everything...

...‘Diana’, and he is seemingly surprised to see her. Diana passes him the baby and mentions, that a mysterious he is chasing her. When she has made the young man promise that he won’t ever tell her son anything and that he will take care of him, Diana runs away without further explanation. She leaves her baby to be raised by the young man, Jerry. We spring forward in time, and now Diana’s baby is a fully grown teenager, presented as the protagonist of the comic. His name is Max, and he is several times referred to as a ‘troublemaker’. He lives with his ‘so-called’ uncle. Whether he is a real uncle or not, is unknown, but considering the short prequel about the mother handing away little baby-Max to Jerry, Jerry might just as well be a friend of the mother, calling himself Max’s uncle as a kind of an alibi. But under all circumstances, Jerry was the one who raised Max, and now they live together like a small family. Max and Jerry move around a lot. They never stay for a long time at one place, and Max is really fed up with that – he would probably rather just stay at one place, go to one school, make some friends and live like any other ordinary teenager. The story itself starts with Max and his uncle arriving to their new home. While Max helps Jerry with carrying the moving boxes, a tree in their new garden catches his attention– he might have a hunch that there is something wrong with it. Though his premonition he moves on ignoring the tree. When he gets...

The Mass Media

...influence. The media is affecting children, the youth and society in general. According to the studies by the Kaiser Family Foundation there was a 400% increase from 1976 to 1996 in sexual references. Not to mention all of the television shows that influence crime, drugs and drinking alcohol. If children learn by observing, imitating and making behaviors their own, then why are all of these negative influences on the mass media? People are trying to understand why the crime rate is so high in the youth population, maybe they should take a look at what they are watching on a day to day basis. Now day’s children have an extremely easy access to the media. Sometimes parents will even hand their children the remote, or buy them a new video game to act is if it were a babysitter. What people need to know is; children learn by observing, imitating and making behaviors their own, so all of the things they are watching on T.V. or see in a movie have a very high influence on the way they will think or act. The media can affect children’s body image and self esteem through unrealistic expectations of beauty, body weight and physical appearance, especially in girls. This may result in eating disorders by some adolescents. When children fall short of their own expectations, based on media images, self esteem can...

The Book Report---- a Thousand Splendid Suns

...and less predictable and he stretches himself, very effectively, to look at the events of the last 35 years in Afghanistan from a woman's point of view. Hosseini does an excellent job of referencing the global and regional political issues in the story without making them a main plot point. The large events are a backdrop, a scene setting device that serves as a canvass for the personal tribulations the main characters endure. In doing this, he avoids being overtly preachy and opinionated. The result is a narrative that keeps its focus on the subjects of the story, while exposing the reader to the cultural and moral pitfalls of Afghanistan during this time frame and, more generally, of any authoritarian society. The story itself gives me new respect for the struggle of the Afghan people, particularly the women, and what they have endured over the past four decades. One point the story makes is that nobody in Afghanistan has escaped loss -- loss of family members, loss of friends,...

Whose Fate Is Worse: Antigone or Creon

...In the classic childrens book Winnie the Pooh, the author writes, “If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you.” This quote portrays how important living life with your loved ones is, even if that means you must die before them just so you wont have to ever imagine life without them. In the play Antigone, it is often debated who has a worse fate, Creon or Antigone. Both of their stories end tragically, with Antigone dying and with every member of Creons family dying. Even though both Antignoe and Creon’s stories had tragic ending, Creons ending was more tragic due to the fact that he forever must live with the guilt of his actions. When Creon doesn’t listen to his all-knowing prophet Tiresias, it is already know that his own fate is not going to be good. Creon had always taken the advice of this prophet however, when the prophet tells Creon that he should not kill Antigone, he doesn’t listen. Creon states, “Since these hairs of mine grew white from the black they once were, he has never spoken a word of a lie to our city. I know, I know. My mind is all bewildered. To yield is terrible. But by my opposition to destroy my very being with a self-destructive curse must also be reckoned in what is terrible” (Sophocles 1390-1393). Even though Creon is aware that Tiresias has been right about everything before, he still choses to kill Antigone. Because he makes this clear mistake in not taking the advice of Tiresias, it...

Change In Ender's Game

...A common perception is that change is only for the better or for the worse, and while Ender Wiggin thinks he has changed for the worse other people think he has changed for the better. In Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, the Earth is under attack. Ender, a brilliant young boy, qualifies for battle school, where, over a course of many years, he strives to be the best student at his age. Throughout Ender’s journey through battle school, he becomes an outcast from being the the smartest kid in his class who gives up on the game of battle school all because of his (kid) role-models opening Enders eyes to the real issues. Being the smartest kid among a group of smart kids in battle school is like a call for isolation. Ender being an outcast was caused by the constant envy of other lanches (other kids in his class). Only one kid ever had the nerve to even say, “I noticed you eating all alone” (42) to Ender and try to be a friend. Teachers never made it any easier for him. Colonel Graff spoke highly of Ender, which only made other kids resent him more. To stop the mistreatment Ender used the reason why they didn’t like him, his brain, by hacking into Bernard's, the meanest kid’s, message system and...

Marching Band Research Paper

...Ever since 4th grade, I have been part of the school band. My instrument was always the euphonium, even if carrying it around was difficult. Once I started high school, I joined the marching band. Things were rocky at first, but I slowly became friends with almost everyone in the band. The marching band felt like a second family to me. Everything went well until 11th grade when I came across the worst student I have ever interacted with, who I will refer to as Mantis. I first met Mantis at a band camp during the summer. At first glance, they seemed like normal ninth graders. They were outgoing and would talk to everyone, especially me. I assumed it was because they thought I was funny, so I enjoyed their company. However, they would quickly become...

How Did Economists Get It so Wrong Abstract

...Introduction How did economist get everything so wrong? This question is a great question to ask and if you ask the author of the article that was published on the New York Times in September 2, 2009, Mr. Paul Krugman. His response would be that is the economist own fault and problem to why in 2008 the economy fail and we went on a recession. The reason to why he says that it is the economist own fault to why we went on recession was that the economist thought that they had figured out the perfect economy policy due to their research and mathematical formulas that made them think that they had solved the mystery of a perfect non recession economy. So what I mean is that in a way they thought there research and thoughts were bullet proof of recessions and even worse another great depression. Furthermore, in this article Paul goes into deep detail to why economists are the way they are and also if they would ever change their beliefs in the future. However Paul does mention in this article that there are very few economist that did predict that a recession would happen in the future, but due to the fact of hoe cocky economist were with their formula an research that they actually laughed at the these few economist, but at it is said whoever laughs last laughs better. Article Background In this article Paul gives a total description of how we reached our recession in 2008 and he starts giving out details from the history of economy and how the first great depression...
