...Writing 101: My Trials and Tribulations Writing 101 As my first English college course nears its end, I can’t help but be proud of the minor yet significant improvements I have made throughout the last eight weeks. I enrolled in WRTG 101S to meet my general education requirements, but also to refresh my reading and writing skills, as it provides the foundation for most other college courses. When I began WRTG 101S, I was uneasy with the quality of my research, formatting, and writing; now I am confident in my ability to produce well-written literature. Over the past eight weeks, I have learned much about the writing process and the importance of prewriting, writing, and revising to ensure a quality end product. Since being introduced to college writing and the writing process during a conference assignment in week one, I have applied these skills to all of my writing projects, which have yielded successful results. These steps allow me to progress through any writing assignment in an organized and efficient manner. This process was especially helpful in the cause and effect essay. This was the first essay I had completed in 10 years, since graduating high school. I was very anxious and nervous about the assignment since I had not written academic pieces in quite some time. Honestly, I still become anxious when approached with any type of writing assignment. This is due to my desire to excel in all that I encounter. I now, however, feel more at ease in knowing that I have specific...

... the teachers may have their own perspectives and beliefs underlying their practices. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the way teachers give written feedback to pupils’ writing, belief of their practices and factors that influencing their belief on practices in written feedback. A number of writing exercise books selected from upper level primary pupils are collected to be analysed and a few follow- up interviews being done to elicit the information data required for the purpose of this study. The results shows that most teachers focus more on the language form, giving uncoded error feedback and less written commentary given in writing. It is assumed that the factors that influence these practices are mainly because of examination culture, the time constraints and the teacher’s personal belief of written feedback. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction Written feedback is a long-standing educational practice that can arguably be linked to almost everything we learn (Evans, Hartshorn, McCollum, & Wolfersberger, 2010; Hattie & Timperley, 2007). According to Hyland & Hyland (2006), teacher written feedback is designed to carry a heavy informational load, offering commentary on the form and content or other aspects of a text to encourage pupils to develop their writing and consolidate learning. The...

...Are Writing Deficiencies Creating a Lost Generation of Business Writers? ZANE K. QUIBLE FRANCES GRIFFIN OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA ABSTRACT. Business professionals and instructors often view writing skills as one of the most important qualifications that employees should possess. However, many business employees, including recent college graduates, have serious writing deficiencies, especially in their ability to use standard English. As a result, American businesses spend billions of dollars annually to remediate these writing deficiencies (College Board, the National Commission on Writing for America’s Families, Schools, and Colleges, 2004). In this article, the authors examine possible reasons for these deficiencies and offer evidence that a modified context-based approach, the glossing approach, and consistent error marking can reduce the number of sentence-level errors students make. Keywords: context-based approach, grammar, punctuation, rules-based approach, writing deficiencies Copyright © 2007 Heldref Publications T hat many employers in the United States are dissatisfied with their employees’ writing skills is not a surprise to individuals who frequently peruse the professional literature in nearly any academic field or discipline (Gray, Emerson, & MacKay, 2005; Wise, 2005). Although the expressions of dismay are frequent and often strong, educators have done little to rectify the situation. Costs of Employees’ Poor Writing Skills material to...

...Process Improvement Module 3 DECISION-MAKING TOOLS DECISION-MAKING TOOLS 1 Basic Tools for Process Improvement What are team Decision-Making Tools? Two tools frequently used by teams to make decisions are Multivoting and Nominal Group Technique. While idea-generating tools such as Brainstorming produce a list of possible alternatives, Multivoting and Nominal Group Technique help to identify the important or popular items or prioritize the items on a list (Viewgraph 1). NOTE: It is important to remember that not all decisions are made in a team situation. Of those decisions that are made by teams, not every one is going to be made using these tools. How does a team select the right tool to use? ! Try Multivoting if you need to: > Reduce a long list of ideas and assign priorities quickly and with a high degree of team agreement > Identify the important items on a list ! Try Nominal Group Technique if you need a more structured approach to: > Generate, clarify, and evaluate a sizable list of ideas, problems, or issues > Prioritize the items on a list 2 DECISION-MAKING TOOLS Basic Tools for Process Improvement Tools for Making Decisions • Multivoting > Reduces long lists of ideas > Identifies important items • Nominal Group Technique > Generates ideas > Prioritizes items DECISION-MAKING TOOLS VIEWGRAPH 1 DECISION-MAKING TOOLS 3 Basic Tools for Process Improvement 4 DECISION-MAKING TOOLS Basic Tools for Process Improvement MULTIVOTING ...

...During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class “Introduction to Writing 101S”. I have learned different writing techniques, different forms of citation formatting, and how to find and properly use different sources; through class exercises and writing the different types of papers I was able to learn those skills, but, when it comes to writing, I still need improvement in order to use a proper grammar, commas, create a statement thesis, and writ a references in APA format. I can remember the first few days of class, the feeling of being hit with the harsh and abrupt reality that I actually had to work hard this semester. Uncomfortable at first, I gradually caught on to the quick but efficient pace our teacher had required from us. Although there was a significant amount of work this semester, I look back now with a smile. I feel that all that work truly paid off, because now, I feel confident that I could write a much better essay then I use to. And it’s very important for me because it was the first English class that I ever took in my academic experience. I have learned how to focus on well combining of grammar, writing mechanics, and citation format. Expanding a writing ability can be difficult and often times frustrating, but when done well, writing can change the opinions of thousands. In Introduction to Writing 101S I learned that the first step in writing an essay is to read and comment the articles that belongs to the essay’s topic. Another important...

...Task 1 (C) – JIT2 Risk Management C. Recommendations Create an implementation plan in which you recommend ways of implementing, monitoring and adjusting the BCP. For the task of creating a Business Continuity Plan (BCP), I will follow a logical and systematic formula for implementation, monitoring and reviewing the plan for United Health Group. The goal is to minimize the impact of any disruption by containing it within a predictable and predetermined period of time. To do this, I recommend that this plan be developed and implemented with as many preventative controls, contingency resources, and procedures designed to allow the organization to quicky bounce back from any long-term business interruption. With this document I’ll present a workable DR plan that focuses not only on safeguarding critical data but also on the restoration of all normal business functions. The process for developing a sound Disaster Recovery plan will involve many layers of detail from the obvious to the not so obvious. Since disasters are by their nature unpredictable, this DR plan must be thorough enough to provide a certain amount of relief to know that if one does occur, the affects on the business will not be catastrophic. Disaster Recovery Topics: 1. Secure executive-level leadership commitment Senior leadership buy-in and support is critical to the long-term success of any enterprise level initiative. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plans are no different. Further...

... I knew that I had made too many mistakes in learning English. Those mistakes are translating English into different languages, don’t learn vocabulary as much as I can, and don’t read and write enough. First of all, every language is unique. They usually have different grammar and use of vocabulary, which means learning English by translating it into different languages will lead to an inevitable defeat. For example, I have worked hard on learning a lot of vocabulary by translating them into Chinese. I thought it was a good idea to build up my vocabulary in order to read and write better. However, those translation processes were hugely disappointing. At that time, I failed to express my idea accurately by those translated vocabulary. As a consequence, good grade and improvement seemed untouchable. Also, when I either wrote or read, I had to use Chinese to think about the passage. As a result, I didn’t do it well and did it very slowly. When I came to the USA, I desperately and completely stopped translation. Just a year of time, my English was obviously and generally improved. I attribute my success to the stop of translation. Second, I would like to show about how best we can utilize our English skills by learning more vocabulary. When I came here, I bought a book about the Second World War. The book is very thick and has too many new words for me. While I started reading, I could only read 5 pages...

...Steps to a Successful Exercise Enclosed you will find everything needed to conduct a TTX that conforms to Federal Emergency Management Agency Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) standards. All recommended actions in this guide assume that you will begin planning three months or more before the desired TTX date. The intent is to improve the overall recovery capabilities and actions and the collective decisionmaking process. ...seemed to describe the needs in my current career. According to the profile, “conventional occupations frequently involve following set procedures and routines” (University of Phoenix, 2014). In my role as a trainer and Continuous Improvement, this was my job description exactly. The Social Aspect perfectly aligns with my strong communication skills and mentoring roles I have adopted with many employees. The last of the profile indicated ‘realistic’ aptitude, which lends itself to “practical, hands-on problems and solutions” (University of Phoenix, 2014) which is also the goal of Lean Six Sigma and Continuous Improvement. I cannot say I agreed with the career matches, but in all other aspects, the profile was correct. The Career Plan Building Activity: Competencies was completed a while ago, and I cannot recall the questions it uses to assess to competencies. The report does not provide detail, but I can comment on the results I have available. The highest competency listed was writing, followed by applying expertise, adapting to change, researching, logical thinking and cooperating. I am pleased to see research and logical thinking were listed in my skill set. In my opinion, these core competencies are key to applying critical thinking when writing or evaluating arguments. It is vital to establish the credibility of a source when researching an...
