...Xcom 285 Final Business Writing Portfolio Business Writing Portfolio Pamela Williams-Rue XCOM/285 Essentials of Managerial Communication Axia College Xcom285 has taught me many valuable assets that I can use in my future, but I believe that the most valuable thing that I have learned is that communications is not just talking. Communications is about listening and writing as well. It is important in business communications to understand that to effectively communicate one need’s to tune into everything that is going on around him or her. This means that he or she needs to understand the audience, the purpose of, and the most effective way to deliver or receive the message. When discussing resources businesses use to effectively communicate, I learned other methods of communications, what role those methods play in our daily activities, and ideas on how to use them. It was great to take those trends and focus on using them effectively to reach a specific audience, and what characteristics of the audience need to be considered when trying to ensure that the audience is being reached effectively. One of the more interesting assignments was the cross culture communications matrix. The reason I found this interesting was because it gave me a better understanding of the diversifications of the world. It was also fun to read about what was considered socially acceptable, un-acceptable, and the norm for different parts of the world. Week eight’s discussion about the laws and policies...

...Business Communication Trends June 1st, 2014 XCOM/285 Essentials of Managerial Communication Communication plays a huge role in my day-to-day activities at work. From communicating with the maintenance person what vats need new oil in them, to letting my grill and service managers know which crew people need breaks at what time. Written communication also plays a huge role in the beginning of our manager shifts. Reading the message’s left before our shift starts in very important, this keeps up up-to-date on what is going on between us the managers and the crew people as well. It also allows to see what if we were plus or minus sales from the day before and if we came out under our projected labor percent. For example, if we were plus on labor the day before we know we have to do all we can to cut more hours and make up for the previous day. Communication helps manage food safety getting, stock, prep and overall operations on the floor getting done. The trends vary from shift to shift and manager to manager. If the day starts out with good communication and things getting done in a timely fashion the day can run very smooth. However say the opening manager had a few calls in and the restaurant became busy right at 7am, then they will probably feel over whelmed and not perform at their fullest potential. This can lead to people calling in, which may not communicated verbally or wrote down. Advertising plays another huge role in communication. The new trend we have going...

...Advancements in Communication Name Essentials of Managerial Communication XCOM/285 Date Professor Technological Advancements in Communication Communication is necessary to run a business, and communication can take place in different forms. Two common types of communication are oral communication, and electronic communication. Technological advancements have improved business communication efforts, and save a business time and money. Although some businesspeople resist change, the advancements in communication still follow what is traditionally considered business communication. Oral communication can take place face-to-face, via the telephone. Electronic communication can take place via instant message, e-mail, and through announcements online. Some people prefer one method over the other, but both methods can be equally effective if all participants have good communication skills. Oral communication provides a slight advantage over electronic communication because participants can receive immediate clarification on any misunderstanding. The tone and message of electronic communication can be misinterpreted, and clarification may take several electronic communications until the message is clear. Today many businesspeople do not have time to meet face-to-face, or conduct business orally, so new technological advancements allow businesses to meet the needs of all people involved. New communication tools...

...Business Writing Portfolio Heather Wassell XCOM/285 Essentials of Managerial Communication University of Phoenix At this point you will begin to put your work together. There are a few steps to think about when doing this also. These steps are used in both business and academic writing. 1. Planning. You have already accomplished a good deal of this with the above steps but now you have to decide how you want to put your ideas together. How to start you work, how to set it up and how to finish. Ask yourself which idea will best be described in which section of the work. How do you want to wrap up the work? You want to leave the audience without questions. 2. Writing. Put your words on paper or on screen. This is probably the easiest step of writing shockingly enough. You have plenty of steps to make your perfect but just getting them on paper or screen is easy. 3. Revising and editing. I put these in the same step because they are basically the same thing. You edit and then revise your work so that it is final and what you were trying to say. Step 4: Talk to your audience. When you are writing an essay for a group of people, you have to know “who” those people are. If you do not know who they are then you will lose them. They will be left with questions and won’t have received the information they were meant to interrupt. This will help you understand what tone you will need to use and it will also help you know how to word your work. You have to know what relationships...

...Assignment: Business Communication Trends Dale Lopez XCOM/285 Essentials of Managerial Communication Mark Eutsler March 13, 2011 Business depends on communication. Growing, and succeeding in business depends on the ability to communicate effectively with people internally, and externally. The three basic purposes of business and administrative communication are to inform, to request or persuade, and to build goodwill. Most messages have more than one purpose. People must communicate to plan products and services, hire, train, and motivate workers, coordinate manufacturing and delivery, persuade customers to buy, and bill them for the sale. Indeed, for many businesses and nonprofit and government organizations, the “product” is information or services rather than something tangible. Information and services are created, and delivered by communication. In every organization, communication is the way people express thoughts, and get work done. (Chapter 1, Page 4, Business Communication, Management, and Success) Informal listening, speaking, and working in groups are just as important as writing formal documents and giving formal oral presentations. As a newcomer in an organization, people need to listen to others both to find out what they are supposed to do and to learn about the values, and culture of the organization. Informal discussions on recent sports, daily headlines and about what is happening at work, connects you to the grapevine, which is an informal source of...

...Privacy Policies and Laws Debate XCOM/285 Essentials of Managerial Communication When thinking about privacy laws and policies, it is safe to clearly state that I am for them. Many people feel that some employers go over board when it comes to this kind of thing but in this age of technology, having privacy polices is not only right it is essential to maintain the respect of the people who work for and with people. There is much evidence that even with privacy policies in place the some employees still use company communications for personal use. There is no clearer evidence of this than that fact the government had to pass laws of privacy laws to protect companies that felt they needed to watch their employee’s use of their communications for any personal use of company communications. These laws were passed so angry employees who were caught using company communications for private things could not go back and sue companies for invasion of their privacy. The ironic part of employees getting upset over what they perceive as an invasion of their privacy is the fact most companies make employees sign privacy agreement policies and then get angry when they get caught breaking them. Privacy policies are not just to protect employers from employees using their communications for private business, but privacy policies are needed to protect companies from viruses that can come in through private emails or...

...Tuition Reimbursement Implementation XCOM 285 Essentials of Managerial Communication Tuition Reimbursement Implementation The popularity of tuition reimbursement programs is growing across America’s businesses. Some believe that tuition reimbursement for employees is only encouraging them to seek jobs elsewhere after the employee receives his or her degree. However, studies outlined by Pattie, M., Benson, G., & Baruch, Y., in Tuition Reimbursement, Perceived Organizational Support (2006) disclose that employers who take an active role in the education process with the employee are more likely to have higher ratios of employee retention after graduation. New Opportunities for Employees Career growth and advancement are two elements employees value about their jobs. It is essential for an employee to feel a sense of accomplishment when allowed to apply the skills gained through education to the employees current job rather than feeling as though they need to change jobs to apply his or her degree. Tuition reimbursement programs when coupled with career growth and advancement for employees can be extremely effective and lucrative for companies. For example, implement an incentive program for a raise or a promotion for employees close to graduation acknowledging their latest accomplishment. This type of tactical move by an employer encourages employee retention, making him or her feel valuable and important in their job. Employees feel valued when an employer...

...Associate Level Material Appendix H Business Writing Portfolio XCOM/285 Essentials of Managerial Communication University of Phoenix Reflection During this course XCOM/285 Essentials of Managerial Communication I have learned many new tools that I really never paid attention to before. I have been working in an office for ten years now and I realized that when we hear the work communication we automatically think about a phone conversation, email between people, or just a meeting in person. Taking this class has really opened up my eyes and that communication is really not only about how you feel about something and the way that you communicate it is the way that you can listen and read what other people are actually telling you. Since taking this class I have made it a strong point to make sure I am really paying attention to what the other person has to say. Whether it is on the phone, through emails or in person, I make it a point that I fully understand what the reciprocator is saying and what they really want. Once I really pay attention to this I am able to communicate back and once this happens we will be able to carry on good communication. I have also noticed that if I have any questions I know that the only way I will be able to understand is to ask the questions that I need to ask an order to full understand what is needed or wanted from me.
