...Year-Round Education One of the big issues today in the United States seems to be school reform; everyone seems to agree that we need to improve our nation’s schools. There have been several solutions suggested, such as: reforming curriculum, implementing national tests, and improving the quality of teachers. One specific solution may be to change the school calendar from the traditional school session of nine months, to a year-round term. Supposedly, this new calendar better facilitates learning. Year-round education has the potential to bring economy, accountability, and educational efficiency to the schools. While Year-Round schooling can save money, the impact on academic achievement is uncertain (Graves, McMullen and Rouse). This type of school system impacts students, teachers, parents and the community in both positive and negative ways. The traditional school calendar has been in effect for more than a century. Students have relied on a 180-day school year with a long summer vacation. Originally, the school calendar was organized so that children would have the summer off to help their parents work on the farm. Although most communities no longer depend heavily on agriculture and children no longer carry on the responsibilities they once did, our society continues to follow the traditional school calendar. The debate surrounding YRE (Year-Round Education) generally focuses on five broad categories: professional staffing and development, administrative...

...Honors English 18 April 2017 YEAR-ROUND SCHOOLING: IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION In the article, “Should American Schools Go Year Round?” Sindhu Nair suggests the current academic calendar is past its time: This schedule was established when the United States was still a largely agrarian nation. At that time, this system was implemented because children were often needed to work in the fields during the summer. Since those reasons no longer make sense in this modern world, many people are advocating a shift away from this ‘antiquated’ nine month school year in favor of year round education. Used in most American schools, the current school calendar, designed in the late 1800’s, no longer meets the...

...SWOT Analysis Toni Dominguez BUS/210 August 10, 2014 Melanie Wright SWOT Analysis A SWOT analysis is used to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of a business. Hill (n.d.) " SWOT analysis is a process where the management team identifies the internal and external factors that will affect the company’s future performance" (para. 1). A SWOT analysis is typically used at the beginning stages of the business, after a business plan has been completed, to determine any potential risks or assets. However, an analysis can be completed anytime a change is made internally or externally that can impact the business and is recommended for review of your business every 6 months (Shouldis, 2012).. The Java Culture coffee has completed their business plan for a new coffee shop in a prime location near University of Oregon. They are looking to provide a comfortable and relaxing shop for customers to enjoy coffee with friends while providing excellent customer service. The owners have secured their financing, determined their budget for employees and the day to day needs of the business, lease, and forecasted sales based off the market for the first year. Now the owners will need to complete a SWOT analysis to determine any unseen risks or assets to their business that might be impacting to their success. A SWOT analysis will start with the strengths in the business. In reviewing the business plan for the Java Culture coffee shop they have many...

...hiring process for new associates used to begin in the fall. The process after that can be broken up into three stages. Each of these stages helped the company make a decision about the candidate and is a key decision point for the firm. The working process is mainly divided in three stages: The purpose of the first one is to see if the candidate has real interest on the company by conducting informal interviews with students in the office in advance of official first- round interviews. These interviews were not part of formal process, that process was to know how serious and enthusiastic the candidates were and a chance to learn more about the firm. In this round interviewers are also instructed to test for culture fit. In the second one the candidates have an interview with an associate who will decide if they have the profile to be promoted into the final round. In this last filter 30 candidates are invited to the Giants Stadium where senior employees interview them five half-hour sessions with short breaks. When the interviews are done, the seniors hold a meeting where they decide which candidates must hire. Candidates invited to Super Saturday will be given the case study to...
