How old is the earth believed to be? Multiple-choice answers include the following choices: A) 4.5 billion years old; B) 500,000 years old; C) less than 10,000 years old; D) It was not created; it evolved. How a person answers the question likely provides a clue as to which camp they fall in regards to creation. If “C” was chosen, less than 10,000 years old, they most likely would be dubbed a Young Earth Creationist. A person’s understanding of the tenets of Young Earth Creationism (YEC) will affect how they view the creation story.
Believed to be the Young Earth Creationism’s founder, Archbishop James Ussher (1581-1561) declared in his writings, Annals of the Old Testament, deduced from the fist origins of the World, that the earth was created in 4004 B.C. (Moore, 2008). The 6000-year …show more content…
While it is in Scripture, and thus aligns with their literal belief of the Bible, it also provides explanation to the entire fossil record; “the creationist view is that every fossilized animal died in the carnage of the Flood” (Hitt, 1996, para. 20). Common thought was that trilobites settled within the sediment and then fossilized. Experiments have shown, however, different results. Rather, when exposed to air, the fossils would rot quickly, rather than the slow fossilization as is commonly believed. In addition, experiments have also shown that if no oxygen were present, then advanced decomposition would take place (Hitt, 1996). The resulting conclusion from these experiments is fossilization occurred quickly based on physical world data and Young Earth Creationists believe it was due to a catastrophic event; they believe it was Noah’s Flood in Genesis 6 (Hitt, 1996). With the fossil question resolved another significant claim made by YEC is that dinosaurs and humans co-existed. In fact, in Job 40 and 41, God speaks of Behemoth and Leviathan who YEC claim could, in fact, be

Creationism vs. Evolutionism

...In the history of science vs. religion there has been no issues more intensely debated than evolution vs. creationism. In the age old debate of creationism versus evolution, many people have given their lifelong work to supporting one side of this debate. But what we must consider are the facts. Theories will only get us so far in life, but the facts, the hard evidence, will convince a doubting person to believe if they will only consider the evidence. Through my research I hope to uncover that very evidence to show those who still doubt the real truth. Creation and Evolution are two major beliefs that people follow as a guideline. The two philosophies have different effects on our lives and the make-up of who we are and what we believe. Creation is a belief followed by many people and generally speaking the Holy Bible serves as a guideline and a set of instructions to show how the earth was formed and to guide us through life. Science backs up this Holy Book it is a very reliable source of the history of the world. There are many questions in life that man has always longed to find the answers to and the questions are: Who am I, why am I here, how did everything get here, and where will I go when I die? Well if you believe in evolution then you came from non-living material that all came together from the big bang. There is no purpose to life, you have no one to answer to, so if it feels good than do it and when you die then you will be recycled into a plant. We supposedly...

Evolution Versus Creationism

...ENG121 Evolution vs. Creationism The debate between evolutionism and creationism began thousands of years ago and the battle between the two streams of thought continues to this day. While creationists believe in a god who is the absolute creator of heaven and earth less than 10,000 years ago, evolutionists believe that the universe began billions of years ago with life started as just a single cell bacteria evolving slowly into everything we see today. “What’s the difference between creationism and evolution?” Charles Darwin’s work on evolution is the most recognized throughout history and the evidence that he discovered supporting evolution changed how many people viewed the history of our universe. His main research project was on a process called natural selection, the idea that survival of the fittest has been a main determinant is shaping how the earth and all living things appear today. Charles Darwin discuses this idea of Natural Selection in his essay “Natural Selection”, detailing evidence supporting his theory. This paper will discuss Darwin’s essay but will also go into further detail of his discoveries, other evolutionary milestones and finally comparing and contrasting the evolutionary argument to the creationism point of view. The idea of evolution first came about in the 1600’s when European naturalists started to question the current theories about how our universe was created. In 1666 the first evidence of evolution was discovered when a couple of fishermen...

Young Earth vs Old Earth

...Comparison Essay: Big Bang Theory vs Young Earth Lee Physical Science March 3, 2012 Introduction Mankind has been giving the nature to explore and search for the beginnings of his existence. The beginnings are most debated over two separate views. The Big Bang Theory and the Six Day Creation have been a battle front for centuries. The “greatest minds in physics,” have pondered the beginning of the universe. Curiosity has led to questions of how the universe began. (LaRocco and Rothstein) Most scientists would teach that the earth has always been in existence. The debates focus either from a religious point of view or a secular or worldly point of view. These two thoughts will be compared and discussed in this paper. The Big Bang Theory The people who believe this theory think the universe began because of a large explosion. Many scientists teach this Big Bang happened some 15 Billion years ago. This event was an explosion “filling all of space with all of the particles of the embryonic universe.” (LaRocco &Rothstein) This theory is about ridiculous, because it is not really plausible to believe anything it states. How can an empty earth just happenstance into existence? This is exactly why they call it a theory. There is no evidence anywhere to prove this theory. Six-Day Creation While there are many people who believe in the evolution of the universe, there are believers that follow the Biblical creation model. To these people...

Dinosaur Extinction

...still a major mystery of earth history. In this review article, extinctions in the geological record will be briefly mentioned. Many of the imaginative theories for the extinction of the dinosaurs will also be presented. Within the uniformitarian paradigm, the meteorite impact theory, once considered ‘outrageous’, now is the dominant theory. However, the volcanic theory is still believed by a majority of paleontologists. Both theories have their strengths and weaknesses. The unscientific behavior of those involved in the meteorite paradigm change will be briefly explored. Evidence that the dinosaurs died in a cataclysm of global proportions will be presented, such as the huge water-laid dinosaur graveyards found over the earth. Occasional nonspecific bone-beds and the rarity of fossils of very young dinosaurs suggest a catastrophic death and burial. The billions of dinosaur tracks recently discovered provide testimony to unusual, stressful conditions. Nests, eggs, and babies are a challenge to a Flood model, but there are enough unknowns associated with the data that solid conclusions are difficult to draw. The part that impacts and volcanism play in a Flood paradigm will be briefly discussed. The question of whether the K/T boundary and the extinction of the dinosaurs should be considered a synchronous event within the Flood will be considered. Introduction Dinosaurs bring wonder to children and adults alike. That such great beasts once roamed the earth is hard to imagine. Even...
