Youth Violence Ever since the horrible tragedy at Columbine High School, there has been a number of recent school shootings in America. Youth violence is a main issue in today’s society. Many people fear what causes youngsters to be so violent, committing atrocious. There are many wonders that go around about why young adolescents commit such violent crimes. These questions vary from why kids take guns to school, or how do we know if they are putting others in danger, what signs are there, what should be looked at, and what can be done to stop these acts of violence. I remember watching the MTV special “Warning Signs”; it explained the violence in our society today. In the video they talked with young adolescents and asked them questions dealing with crimes they have been institutionalized for. The video also explained warning signs of someone who may be planning to commit an act of violence. Study has shown that anger plays a major role in ones behavior problem. Aggression is any form of behavior intended to harm or injure another living being. There are many reasons why someone acts in an aggressive way. The potential influence of violent video games on youth violence remains an issue of concern for psychologists, policymakers and the general public. Although several prospective studies of video game violence effects have been conducted, none have employed well validated measures of youth violence, nor considered video game violence effects in context with other influences on youth violence such as family environment, peer delinquency, and depressive symptoms. The current study builds upon previous research in a sample of 302 (52.3% female) mostly Hispanic youth. Results indicated that current levels of depressive symptoms were a strong predictor of serious aggression and violence across most outcome measures. Depressive symptoms also interacted with antisocial traits so that antisocial individuals with depressive symptoms were most inclined toward youth violence. Neither video game violence exposure, nor television violence exposure, were prospective predictors of serious acts of youth aggression or violence. These results are put into the context of criminological data on serious acts of violence among youth.

Youth violence is one of the most talk about and discussed problem in most city and schools around the country. The problem received increased public attention since the school shootings and violent acts that have occurred in recent years. It is a topic that is of great importance in class and people especially teachers should be well informed so that they will be prepared in dealing with these children involved in the violent acts. Violence among youth, especially in schools, is one of American society’s most pressing concerns.
Violence is a learned behavior. Children often experience violence for the first time in their lives in their homes or in their community. This first taste of violence may occur with their parents, family members or their friends. Studies have shown that children who witness violent acts, either as a victim or as a victimizer, are more likely to grow up to become mixed up in violence. For many young people who have already developed a pattern of violent behavior, the probability that this way of life will endure into their adult lives is very likely. Aggression is often learned very early in a child's life. For the growing trend in youth violence to subside parents and many others must make every attempt to educate them selves and to apply methods that will reduce and ultimately prevent much of this violent behavior. Violence among teenagers is on the rise, and has been since the early 1980's. This is due to the increase of violence in the media, the astounding availability of firearms and the lack of proper guidance in the home. It also states that homicide is the second leading cause of death for persons 15-24 and is the leading cause of death for African-American and Hispanic youths in this age group. Many people today wonder why so many children are committing crimes. Children today are so far more advance then children of the pass. Many children spend so much time in playing video games and watching television. Parents today are in the dark about what their children are doing, which lead into children going an extra step in finding out things the hard way. Though some experts claim that family structures are the cause for youth violence, many notice that video games, music, and television are increasing violence in youth today.
There are some benefits to video games for children but, in most cases these games are hard to find. Although there are a few games that are educational and help kids with their learning experiences, most of the top rated games contained violence. Take for example the whole series of Grand Theft Auto. You probably can get an idea of what goes on in the game just by the title of the game. What kind of influence does a game like Grand Theft Auto have on the youth?

One of the biggest problems which the United States is faced with is juvenile crime, including violence, especially in our schools. This outburst of violence with our juveniles is frightening, and sometimes I question myself about wanting to be in the situation; but then I just remember why I want to be there and the questions disappear. I just feel that we, as parents, need to take care and claim responsibility for our children. Trust me, I understand how difficult it is to be a single parent, working full-time, and trying to create a better life for your family, but this all can be done and you can still raise a normal, outstanding, loving child.
I realize that sometimes things seem so overwhelming, but if you take a step back and look at the big picture, you will feel differently. These juveniles just normally want some attention, or are having some difficulty in life and feel that there is no other way to resolve issues than with violence or attention getting tantrums. To me violence is not only a physical conflict, but I feel that sometimes the mental violence that these juveniles dish out is worse to take. II. The ratings range from 'Early Childhood' to 'Adults Only.' To buy a game rated 'Teen,' kids only have to be over thirteen. For 'Mature,' they must be over seventeen to buy it
"America's Army," which is distributed by the United States Army and encourages young players to consider military careers. The game is highly technologically advanced and allows players to go through the Army's basic training, learn the Army's philosophy and eventually go on Special Forces missions. The article questions the morality of "America's Army," which trades on the very violent tendencies that critics of video games accuse the medium of promoting. The game works against efforts to reduce childrens' exposure to violence.
In one recent experimental study (Valadez and Ferguson 2012), violent and non-violent video game conditions carefully matched on competitiveness, pace of action and difficulty were found to have little influence on either hostility or visuospatial cognition using a well-validated outcome instrument.
Bullying is increasing among students in schools nationwide, maintains Izzy Kalman in the following viewpoint. Although some news media have painted a portrait of school shooters such as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold as bullies rather than victims, Kalman insists that school shooters do not commit mass killings because they want to bully people, but because they feel like victims. To fight bullying, Kalman argues that we must understand that we are all bullies and victims, it just depends from whose point of view we are looking. Izzy Kalman is a nationally certified school psychologist who has been working in schools and private practice since 1978. He is the author of Bullies to Buddies: How to Turn Your Enemies into Friends and other publications for dealing with bullying and relationship problems.
As most of you are aware, Columbine launched the modern world's war against bullies. Our experts concluded that since the great majority of school shootings are perpetrated by victims of bullying, we need to get rid of bullies. If we can only make bullies disappear, no kids will be victims, and no one will have any motivation to shoot up their schools. So with ten years of massive anti-bully education, why is bullying becoming a more intensive problem? Why isn't it going down?
In case you have been oblivious to recent news, the month-and-a-half period preceding the tenth Columbine anniversary had more high-profile mass shootings than any six-week period in history. The most horrific took place in the city of Binghamton, New York, where my own son happens to go to college. Without exception, every one of these shootings was committed by someone feeling like a victim ... of their ex-spouse, of their boss, of other students, of the economy. Why are so many people going on angry shooting rampages?
Of course the following cannot be the only explanation for these shootings, because each shooter has his own history, constitution and motives, but the massive anti-bully education we have been getting since Columbine can only have served to contribute to people's anger towards, and desire for revenge against, their perceived bullies. After years of hearing endlessly that bullies are incredibly dangerous, that bullies shouldn't be tolerated, that bullies should be punished and expelled, and that society must protect us from bullies, is it any wonder that some of us eventually crack when society fails to protect us from bullies, and pick up guns to solve our problems once and for all?
(Before I continue, I must ask you to please refrain from making the ridiculous complaint that I am "pro-bully" and "anti-victim." No one cares about victims more than I do. But "bully" and "victim" are not objective diagnoses. They are subjective experiences. We are all bullies and victims. It just depends whose point of view we are looking from. Whenever we are angry at people, we feel we are their victims, but they are likely to feel we are their bullies.) and its team of psychiatrists and psychologists have reached an entirely different conclusion.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, five percent of American children have ADHD, but studies reveal more than 11 percent of American children are diagnosed with the condition.
What may be more alarming is that there is increasing evidence that ADHD may not be the epidemic that some are claiming, and in fact, may not even be an actual condition.
"There’s a societal trend to look for the quick fix, the magic bullet that will correct disruptive behaviors," said David Rubin, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. "But for those looking for a quick solution to escalating behaviors at home, the hard truth is there is unlikely to be a quick fix."
Psychologist and parenting columnist John Rosemond echoes this sentiment, asserting that childhood misbehavior resulting from lack of discipline is incorrectly diagnosed as ADHD. As such, it is turning a discipline problem into a psychological problem.
