“Anatomy and Physiology of the Zombie

A Discussion of Why They Cannot Exist”

Looking at whether it is feasible or not for the existence of zombies, I look to the integumentary system for any possibility. I will examine the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and the aging process.
The integumentary system is the largest organ in the body, it includes the skin, hair, nails, exocrine glands, sensory receptors, and the subcutaneous tissue. On average, the skin weighs about ten pounds and has an area of about 20 square feet. It serves as a barrier between the human body and the environment. Some environmental dangers are chemicals, ultra violet light, and physical damage.
The first layer of the skin is the epidermis which covers almost the entire body. It is made up of squamous epithelial cells that are stacked up on one another. These cells produce and store keratin which makes it water resistant. Even though the epidermis is very thin it is made up of four layers.
The innermost layer is the stratum germinativum, this is where mitosis takes place. New cells are being produced constantly, while this is happening the older cells are being pushed toward the outer surface of the skin. The new cells produce keratin, in the keratinocytes, and as they move away from the blood supply they die and shed off. Approximately 8% of the epidermis is made up of melanocytes. The melanocytes produce melanin which protects the skin from the harmful UV rays.
The living keratinocytes also synthesize defensins, which play an important role when the epidermis is injured. They act against bacteria, fungi, and viruses by rupturing the membranes of the pathogen.
The epidermis also produces vitamin D. The cells of the epidermis contain cholesterol, that when exposed to the sun changes into vitamin D. Calcium and phosphorus can not be absorbed by the intestines with out the aid of vitamin D. There are other benefits to this vitamin such as bone and muscle strength, regulation of insulin, and protection against certain cancers and the flu.
The outermost layer of the epidermis is the stratum corneum. This layer has two important roles. The first being that it provides a barrier to prevent pathogens from entering the body. One way is by the flaking off of the dead cells and the second is by the secretion of sebum that inhibits growth of bacteria. The second role of this layer is the prevention of water entry and over saturating the cells.
A zombie is a non-living creature that can not exist because its skin does not contain any living cells. A zombie skin cells do not under go mitosis to produce new skin cells that are lost from flaking, the zombies skin does not produce sebum to protect it from pathogens, nor does it produce vitamin D to be used by the body to build strong bones and muscles.
The dermis is the deep layer of the skin underneath the epidermis. It is made of dense irregular connective tissue along with nerve tissue, blood, and blood vessels. The dermis is much thicker than the epidermis and gives the skin its strength and elasticity, and the resistance to wrinkling and sagging. The dermis also has accessory structures which include the hair and nail follicles, sensory receptors, glands, and blood vessels.
At the base of the hair follicle are sensory nerve fibers that surround the root of the hair. When a hair moves or has been removed the nerve ending allows humans to feel this. One of the main functions of hair is to act as a sensory touch receptor. The sebaceous glands are also associated with the hair follicle, they produce an oily secretion to help condition the hair and surrounding skin.
With the dermis we also find the nail follicle. Nails protect the ends of the fingers and toes from injury and give fingers the ability to pick up small objects. Nails consist of highly keratinized modified epidermal cells. The nail arises from the nail bed and forms a lunula. This is where mitosis takes place. The new cells produce keratin and then they die.
The sensory receptors are found in the dermis. They sense touch, pressure, heat, cold, itch, and pain. Their purpose is to inform the brain of the external environment and its effect on the skin which interprets the impulses as a specific sensation.
Exocrine glands are made of epithelial tissue. There are three major types of glands in the human body. The first is the sebaceous glands, open into the hair follicle or onto the skins surface and secretes an oily substance called sebum. The purpose is to inhibit the growth of bacteria and to prevent drying out of the hair and skin. Secondly, is the ceruminous gland which is located in the ear canal. This gland secretes cerumen which keeps the surface of the eardrum pliable and prevents it from drying out. Lastly, is the sweat glands of which there are two types. Apocrine glands are found at the underarm and the genital area and normally are triggered during stressful or emotional situations. Eccrine glands are found all over the body, but may be more abundant on the forehead, upper lip, palms, and soles. These glands are stimulated when the body needs to lower its temperature.
Last, but not least, are the blood vessels called arterioles. The smooth muscle within their walls allows for them to open and close when needed, in order to maintain a normal body temperature. When the body is too warm, the arterioles will dilate to increase the blood flow and allow heat to escape. When the body is cold, the arterioles will constrict to decrease the blood flow to keep the heat within the core of the body.
A zombie can not exist due to the fact that the dermis contains many living cells that under go mitosis and need blood flow in order to function. Zombies do not have an operating circulatory system, therefore the cells can not live. The sensory receptors also can not work because the brain is dead, hence the zombie would not have sensation of touch, cold, heat, pain, and etc. Lastly, the exocrine glands would not be able to function, since they would not be receiving signals from the nerve tissue in order to regulate body temperature.
The subcutaneous layer is the inner fat layer of the skin, which has a few different functions. The first is to provide insulation to help maintain the body's temperature when we are in cold environments. Second, is to anchor the layers of the skin to the muscles beneath the skin. Third, is to protect the muscles, bones and organs from injury. And fourth, is to act as a passageway for the blood vessels and nerves from the dermis to the muscles.
A zombie can not exist. As discussed above the zombie does not have a living nervous system or circulatory system. Both of these systems have to operate in order to regulate body temperature an to supply blood to the muscles and nerves.
As people grow older, the layers of the skin become thinner, repairing of the skin process is slower, and the skin starts to wrinkle and sag. The melanocytes die and the hair becomes gray or white. The sweat glands become less active, the skin is more likely to burn, and the amount of fat normally is less, which makes older people more sensitive to the heat and cold. When all of the processes of the skin cease the body dies.

Zombie

...A zombie (Haitian French: zombi, Haitian Creole: zonbi) is a fictional undead being created through the reanimation of a human corpse. Zombies are most commonly found in horror and fantasy genre works. The term comes from Haitian folklore, where a zombie is a dead body reanimated through various methods, most commonly magic. Modern depictions of zombies do not necessarily involve magic but often invoke science fictional methods such as radiation, mental diseases, viruses, scientific accidents, etc.[1][2] The English word "zombie" is first recorded in 1819, in a history of Brazil by the poet Robert Southey, in the form of "zombi".[3] The Oxford English Dictionary gives the origin of the word as West African, and compares it to the Kongo words nzambi (god) and zumbi (fetish). One of the first books to expose Western culture to the concept of the voodoo zombie was The Magic Island by W.B. Seabrook in 1929. This is the sensationalized account of a narrator who encounters voodoo cults in Haiti and their resurrected thralls. Time claimed that the book "introduced 'zombi' into U.S. speech".[4] Zombies have a complex literary heritage, with antecedents ranging from Richard Matheson and H. P. Lovecraft to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein drawing on European folklore of the undead. In 1932, Victor Halperin directed White Zombie, a horror film starring Bela Lugosi. Here zombies are depicted as mindless, unthinking henchmen under the spell of an evil magician. Zombies, often still using...

...these poor people have developed over 100's  of years. In a general comparison to the zombies of  Haiti and the zombies in the " New Dawn of the Dead" movie. The zombies of the movies are made for strictly entertainment purposes and are changed to fit a mold of the producer and writer. The zombies are far fetched whereby; zombies suddenly appear and change humans into more zombies. On the other hand Del Guercio reveals, through Wade Davis, a real voodoo culture on the Isle of Haiti in which, zombies are made of everyday inhabitants for crimes against society and places fear in the average population to know that any member of your family can be placed in a state of zombification through a drug from the puffer fish. The zombie is sold to the plantations of Haiti where, he moves throughout his day slow and lethargically performing his duties for his new plantation master. In the...

Zombie Apocalypse

...Take for example the first African American to run for president of the United States. No one thought he would win and people were still upset he was even nominated. My film is going to cause controversy, much like our now President Barack Obama did, the main character isn’t going to be your typical casting. I want my main character to be a woman, a woman that is educated, not falling while being chased; with her boobs hanging out or relying on the protecting and leadership of a man. This woman will also be a minority. Typically when roles are cast, and not just for zombie films, the main character is always a white man. Based on the data collected by the United States Census Bureau one can infer that while the United States has a majority of white people, white people are not the only race in the United States. (U.S Census Bureau). Can you imagine what it would have been like in a time that shortly followed the Civil Rights movement for a non-minority to have the lead in a film? George Romero could and his movie Night of the Living Dead was released in the year 1968 with a main character that was African American and whom was the final person to be killed. Night of the Living Dead could be described as an iconic movie, not just for its use of zombies, but for the underlying message represented by the zombies...

Zombie Apocalypse Simulations

...scenarios involving animated, cannibalistic humans engulfing the Earth into chaos. Some scientists have posed the question of: could this actually occur in the real world? Due to this, simulators tracking the spread of the virus have been fabricated, research into which parts of the brain could be effected and how has been prompted, and which parts of nature have the probability of turning us into such things has been researched. All of this might seem real. The creation of a zombie apocalypse preparedness plan implemented into high schools could assist in saving lives. That is, if any of this information had real meaning. High schools shouldn't worry about creating a zombie apocalypse plan; it's been shown the brain can be zombiefied, however, lacks how; proof argued such as parasites and fungi are not enough, and while simulators exist showing how an apocalypse could spread, there is no clear sign of how it could all begin. There are theories that propse the human brain has the capability to become that of a zombie, yet does not prove how, only using fictional scenarios has examples. An...

Cause Of The Zombie Apocalypse

...The zombie apocalypse had just broken out, and I was astonished that so many people had died on the first day. Apparently half of the world’s population had been killed by a zombie; but the peculiar thing about all these fatalities, is that all the people were standing still when they were killed. Apparently they didn’t even try and make a run for it when they heard the zombies approaching. Every single one of the deaths had been reported that way, and I, as well as others, had no idea what may have caused this phenomenon. Why would people not try and outrun something that was almost certainly trying to kill or mame you? I reached out to my colleague, who had the information first hand from civilians he had interviewed. When I had gathered...

Zombie Apocalypse Satire

...But the gems reveal themselves rather quickly as demonstrated by the meteoric rise of “The Walking Dead”. The creators of the franchise jumpstarted a dying genre, that of the Zombie Apocalypse. So much so that spinoffs are in production, and imitators abound. All trying to cash in on the mindless consumption of the horrid, as if we ourselves had become the mindless horde. Somewhere within each us the idea of watching a person actually devoured by another is fascinating, the repulsion one might expect; affected. The revulsion feigned, we just can’t get enough. Much is a byproduct of the desire to be a survivor, a warrior. Fearsome and self-sufficient, something our society discourages. Zombie

...In the midst of all children’s fantasies is the idea of how they would survive a zombie apocalypse. If faced with the circumstance of being infected, how would they react? To be a zombie or not to be, that is the question. After weighing the options, even if they seem farfetched, I would hands down want to experience the path of metamorphosis into a zombie. There are many reasons for this conclusion, the two I will discuss are that zombies seem to have no restrictions and no reasoning capabilities. These can be viewed for their positives and negatives in any situation, however I see them as both being very appealing to me. It is very common in this day and age for movies and television shows to include the idea of a zombie or undead monster. From as early as when I was in middle school, I formulated an idea in my mind as to how being a zombie would pan out. Starting with a game called Metal Slug 3, where your character could turn into a zombie, I loved playing as a zombie more then as a human. The feeling of being fearless was very tempting and who doesn’t like projectile vomit evaporating their opponents. Movies, such as Shaun of the Dead, also portrayed being a zombie as less of an end of existence and more of a new beginning. The protagonist’s best friend Ed enjoys some nice PlayStation 2 after being infected, and as unrealistic as it seems, the idea is just so enticing. Although the zombies being discussed in this paper don’t hold these same features, the concept...

...The Keys to Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse A zombie apocalypse occurs when the dead “revive” with the intention to transform the living into zombies. It is quite evident that a zombie apocalypse has never occurred, and that the chance of a zombie apocalypse will ever occur is unlikely. However, such absent inactivity should not lead a person to eliminate the possibility of a zombie apocalypse as a future reality. Unlike natural disasters that often come with a warning, a zombie apocalypse would most likely be absent of any warning – it’s an outbreak that occurs unexpectedly, and spreads rapidly. Due to the unpredictable nature of zombie apocalypses, one should not neglect preparation. While at first glance, it may seem that surviving a zombie apocalypse is impractical; with the proper location, shelter, and weapons, people can in fact survive. Location is a vital factor to consider when preparing for a zombie apocalypse....

The people who will survive are the people who plan ahead for the unthinkable (and have large amounts of money to construct the perfect zombie-proof house). It is obvious to anyone who watches “The Walking Dead” or other pop culture classics where the undead rule that the first and best line of defense is a good shelter. Without proper protection, you are left exposed and vulnerable. However, with a perfectly located, tricked out post-apocalyptic pad, you can rest easy and ride out the apocalypse in luxury. ...to surviving the zombie apocalypse. Initially, shelter must be established. A well concealed building, such as a prison, is an ideal shelter from zombies. It is large enough to accommodate a large body of survivors who are hopefully willing to join the fight against the army of the living dead. Gates, fences, and large open areas surrounding the facility make it easier to locate and fend off any zombies that try to breach the perimeter. The solid structure of the building itself will help further deter intruders. A high outlook post within the shelter will also need to be quartered; from which, a designated “spotter” can survey the surroundings for any posing danger. Additionally and unquestionably, food and water are necessities whether zombies are seeking your flesh or not. In order to maintain proper health and nutrition while fighting the undead, food, water, and any other desired supplies will need to be collected and stored. Chuck Palahniuk's Short Story 'Zombie'

...“If you don’t know what you want, you end up with a lot you don’t.” (Chuck Palahniuk) fits perfectly with his short story Zombie. Most of us really don’t know what we want out of life. We go to college hoping to land a job that will make us money, yet, sacrifice the passion that makes life meaningful. In the short story Zombie, many characters struggle with the lack of purpose, challenge, or opportunities of life. Out of frustration, they choose to do something drastic to get away from it all. Initially, these choices are satisfying. They become a quick fix to a much bigger problem or “A new reality begins”: a reality that again someone does not have the power to control. At least they don’t think they do. So, they get reckless. They make painful decisions that not only affect their own life, but they bleed into those around them. This imagery of frustration and depression is what Palahniuk uses to create eccentric characters in this bold short story. Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Zombie, along with many...
