...their country. The author’s take different approaches to conveying this message, resulting in the texts having different tones. Patriotism as a rationale may convince a person to do something, but it is not enough to comfort them to the point where the consequences become irrelevant. Society has multiple ways to recruit people to enlist in war, yet all the methods conveniently leave out the pain one will endure. In both texts, the authors criticize society’s view of patriotism as a justification for people’s suffering in war. In Pirandello’s War, a woman listens as a fat man explains “the way his son [has] fallen as a hero for his king and his Country, happy and without regrets” (Pirandello 1372). At the end of his story, the women asks, “Then… is your son really dead?” (Pirandello 1372), breaking the fat man’s uplifting spirit by causing him to realize the permanence of his son’s death. He uses patriotism to honour his child's passing and turn it into a prideful story rather than a traumatic event. While it momentarily comforts him, it is not able to permanently rid him of his grief and sadness. In Dulce es Decorum Est, Owen writes “The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori” (Owen l.27-28), which translates to “it is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country.” (qtd. in Kennedy footnote 4). Owen uses this quotation to emphasize that society’s heroic view of dying on behalf of one’s country is a lie, and does not justify enduring the trauma a soldier goes through. Both...

...For many, the beliefs and realizations they hold are often shaped by their early years. Experiences impact and model the way many look at the world. John Wycliffe and John Huss are no different and the early lives of these men give insight into their later teachings. Little is known of John Wycliffe’s early life. He was born sometime between 1320 and 1328, most likely in the Yorkshire town of Wycliff-on-Tees, to a family of lesser nobility and educated at Queen’s College, Oxford, in the 1340s. He received a bachelor’s in the Faculty of Arts in 1356, a bachelor’s of Theology in 1369, and a doctorate in late 1372. There is no doubt that his exposure and witness of the 1349 Black Death and the Hundred Years’ War affected him, but the years...

...Interpersonal Communication Barriers According to Spahos (2010), effective communication is necessary in any organization for several reasons, it helps develop better manager and employee relationships, increases motivation and morale, drives productivity up, and even creates a better connection among an organization’s internal and external customers. Never the less, effective communication is essential towards getting a message across from sender to receiver, preventing misunderstanding and misinterpretation. For my research topic, I want to discuss interpersonal communication barriers within an organization. The company that I choose to incorporate my findings will be FedEx Ground Package Systems, Inc. I have chosen this company because I am familiar with its structure and I will have the ability to conduct live interviews with management, employees, and contractors in order to really understand how the lines of communication work. Moreover, over the past few months since I have been working for FedEx Ground, I have witnessed some barriers of communication that can definitely be improved. What interests me about this topic is that I can evaluate the organization that I work for and identify any barriers of communication among managers, employees, and contractors and hopefully, be able to suggest effective communication techniques to everyone. After further research and all information analyzed, I will be able to examine the most common communication barriers and discuss...

...“OTC” The Ideal Choice Abstract: This paper will focus on comparing the positives and negatives of taking 3 OTC painkillers, Motrin, Tylenol, and Bayer, and will determine which of these is the safest, most beneficial, OTC painkiller. Sources include FDA Reports, a research study, manufacturer’s information and other medical documentation. Nikkos Jackson GE117 Composition 1 It’s 3:15a.m., and you just woke up with a pounding headache. You are running a slight fever, and all you want to do is go to bed. You go into your bathroom cabinet to retrieve some medicine, and in front of you sit Motrin, Tylenol, and Bayer. Which do you choose? What will eliminate all of your symptoms? What is the safest OTC pain reliever that you can take? These are just a few of the questions you may have when deciding which OTC pain reliever is the right choice for you. Although, Motrin, Tylenol, and Bayer serve similar purposes, there are many differences in each drug that makes them affect your body differently, including active ingredients, dosages, and side effects. Motrin is a general use pain reliever and fever reducer. This drug is intended to relieve fever, minor aches and pains throughout the body, as well as headache pain. The active ingredient in Motrin is Ibuprofen. This pain reliever is taken orally, and comes in several different forms. The original form is a tablet, but there have been other forms introduced such as the capsule, and gel capsule. It is recommended that this drug...

This type of damage to the brain may cause extensive paralysis of the opposite side affected. (Bauldoff, 2015, p. 1372) Risk Factors Risk factors for a hemorrhagic CVA would include: hypertension, arteriosclerosis, current aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, sickle cell disease, atrial fibrillation, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, smoking, and drug and alcohol abuse. More nonspecific risk factors may include: obesity, sedentary lifestyle, recent viral and bacterial infections, past history of stroke, family history of stroke, and hormone replacement therapy. My client had a history of hypertension, smoking, and alcohol abuse. My client was driving when he had this episode. Clinical Manifestations Manifestations of a hemorrhagic stroke vary and are dependent on what cerebral vessel was involved and always happen suddenly and usually affects one side. The main manifestation from a rupture of the internal carotid artery is motor loss. Motor loss is a loss of voluntary musculoskeletal control. The most common types of motor loss are hemiplegia or hemiparesis. (Bauldoff, 2015, p. 1372) My client’s condition was left-sided hemiplegia in the upper extremity and hemiparesis in the left extremity. He has lost total control over his left arm and left hand resulting in a left hand contracture and his left lower extremity was greatly weakened...

Abstract The goal of this practicum was to isolate plasmid DNA from Escherichia coli (E. coli), to identify it, to prove that the plasmid is circular and double-stranded and to give bacterial cells new genetic properties via transformation. An unknown plasmid S was isolated from the bacterial stain Escherichia coli (E. coli). Then its purity was determined by calculating the ratio A260/A280. After that, the unknown plasmid S was identified, followed by the determination of its antibiotic resistance gene. Subsequently, a new culture of E. coli DH5α was transformed by using the isolated plasmids where only the transformed cells survived. Finally, the plasmid-DNA was treated with exonuclease V to prove the circular and double-stranded property of plasmid. The isolated plasmid S was identified to be pCTB2 which was found to be have two forms: (I) relaxed & (II) supercoiled. The ratio A260/A280 gave the value of 1.65 indicating the presence of proteins (RNA/contaminated DNA). Furthermore, the plasmids were partially digested...

...of this situation. Zeus sent Hermes, the messenger god, to Calypso’s prison in paradise to order her to release Odysseus. The fact that Odysseus stayed faithful to his wife, even when he was tempted by a beautiful nymph goddess for 7 years, shows that he was an extremely loyal character. Not only is Odysseus faithful to his family when they are separated, but he is still just as faithful and loyal when they are together. The reader sees this when Odysseus meets his son and wife for the first time in 20 years. At first, Penelope does not know who he is, but Odysseus proved his faithfulness when he described their bed. He said “There is our pact and pledge, our secret sign, built into that bed— my handiwork and no one else’s!” (p. 808 line 1372). He remembered his and Penelope’s special symbol of love, the bed, even after years of being separated. This shows true devotion, love, loyalty and faithfulness. Odysseus is one of the most commendable characters in literature and he would still be considered a hero today. Like all modern heroes, Odysseus has bravery, leadership, and intelligence, but he also has a very unique quality that separates him from all other modern heroes. This quality is faithfulness. Overall this quality is the most important character trait that someone can have and Odysseus shows this more than most other heroes. Although Odysseus’s story is slightly different than modern heroes, he is still an extremely admirable character. Through the many trials and tribulations...

...1) Better access to foreign capital markets and investment -Eliminating barriers to cross border investing Accounting information has a significant influences on the behaviour of investors and financial capital markets. The implementation of IFRS for financial reporting in Australia has allowed for better access to foreign capital markets and investment, eliminating barriers to cross border investing. The major benefits include the potential for lesser information asymmetry (Horton, Serafeim and Serafeim, 2012), improved reporting transparency, reduced information costs, increased comparability, accountability and increase in the quality of financial reporting (Ahmed, Neel and Wang, 2013). Therefore markets become more completive and efficient, benefiting investors. A major prospective benefit of implementation of IFRS for financial reporting is the increase in accounting comparability. The enhanced comparability is brought together though increased quality and convergence of accounting standards particularly in areas such as Fair value measurements, business combinations and revenue recognition (Jordan, 2013). The increased comparability hence allows Australian business to facilitate lower costs of capital and have better access foreign capital markets and cross-border investing. On the contrary however comparability may become worse in situations where IFRS implementation is not mandatory and countries have two varying accounting standards. Furthermore the full scope of...

...The Effects of Hand Hygiene Interventions Hand hygiene has been proven to decrease the spread of organisms in all settings community wide. There are many forms of hand hygiene such as: antibacterial hand soap, nonantimicrobial soaps, and antiseptic hand sanitizers. Various techniques and methods can be used when performing hand hygiene. Generally, hand hygiene is the most important procedure in eliminating infections to the body. The studies shown will discuss the effectiveness of hand washing in every setting throughout a community. In my first article that I read, “Effect of Hand Hygiene on Infectious Disease Risk in the Community Setting: A Meta-Analysis”, the authors did a meta-analysis to show the results of the benefits of hand hygiene as for preventing respiratory and gastrointestinal infection related illnesses. The article took a total of thirty intervention studies and created the meta-analysis. The results showed that certain hand hygiene interventions were less effective in respiratory infections such as: hand sanitizers and the teaching of hand hygiene. Hand sanitizers and hand washing education were not directly linked to decreasing the spread of organisms in gastrointestinal or respiratory illnesses, but antibacterial hand soap was. Hand hygiene was proven to be much more effective in the studies to decrease likelihood of the occurrence of illnesses in gastrointestinal infections rather than respiratory infections. In my second article read, “Inexpensive...
