Dr Hasnul Mohamad Salleh Abstracts Upon ascending to Malaysia’s highest public office on April 2009, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak has made waves to all corners of the nation with the introduction of 1Malaysia concept. The concept evolves around culture of excellence, perseverance, acceptance, education, integrity, meritocracy, humility and loyalty. It also encompases NKRAs on six major issues. Since independent, national unity has been made top priority – unity in education, culture, socio-economy, political, regional, etc. 1Malaysia seeks to improve the relations of all Malaysians, regardless of racial, religious or cultural backgrounds. There are certain major concerns that need to be addressed in order to seriously engage in 1Malaysia concept. Without correcting them, all efforts will be in vain. 1Malaysia concept caters the needs of all sector of the plural society and to ensure equal distribution of wealth between racial groups, between states and federal. Integrity on the part of the government and the public sector is one matter. The introduction of NKRAs and KPIs is a laudable move. The managing of all spectrums of unity (not just racial) is to be given proper thinking. In order to move Malaysia towards a better society, identity and future hence unity and integration should promote co-operation between race, beliefs and region as one Malaysia, not as Sarawakian or Sabahan. ...1Malaysia: Beyond the Canvas The 18@8 exhibition signified the inauguration of Wei-Ling Gallery at Brickfields in 2005. Hermetic readings of every chapter for the past few years portrayed varied concerns channelled into different themes. This landmark exhibition has exhibited some of the most compelling works by many a local artist. An important milestone was created when this very same event was replicated beyond the shores of the country, bringing Malaysian Art to Karachi, Pakistan. A show that demarcates the objectives of Wei-Ling Gallery to promote contemporary Malaysian Art, previous instalments provided a platform to two dimensional art works that vetted specific matters. The artists strived to create dialectic works with characteristic impulses. In concurrence with the 5th instalment of the 18@8 exhibition, the gallery posed a new challenge to the participating artists and itself. A turning point for Wei-Ling Gallery is its initiative to orchestrate and curate shows based on its own direction, heartening the artists to widen their tangential perspectives with conceptualized shows. As the gallery is taking the road less travelled in more experimental and cutting edge shows, so do the artists. This vehicle (18@8) presents the artists with an avenue to work beyond the boundaries of individualistic concerns, transgressing beyond the norm of what we expect. With an exploratory ardour, Wei-Ling Gallery conceptualized and challenged the artists to partake in thematic investigations...

...‘1MALAYSIA.’ DISCUSS THIS TERM WITH EXAMPLE AND HOW IT HAS IMPROVED MALAYSIA. Improving government efficiency is an important aspect of 1Malaysia. The use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), metrics and targets more typically used in private business and National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) is thus naturally an important part of the 1Malaysia effort. Najib says the government is committed to carrying out a transformation programmed as its main agenda based on approaches and philosophy of 1Malaysia people first, performance now. Immediately after assuming the office of Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato Ser Najib Tun Razak introduced a series of KPIs in order to measure and improve the efficiency and quality of government services as well as realizing the 1Malaysia concept. Najib said that KPIs were implemented to make sure the people’s satisfaction whether they are satisfied with our service, whether we have solved their problems. Najib's announcement of the KPI effort was generally well-received. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the KPI formula was a measure against which the people could measure the performance of Najib and the government. He said the KPIs would provide motivation for every minister to perform well. The KPIs provide a mechanism for the evaluation of ministries and other government agencies including performance reviews carried out every six months. Each ministry has been required to establish specific KPIs including that focus on policy...

...1Malaysia is about Malaysians working together for the betterment of one another in all forms of opportunity and service. Let us take pride in that we have uplifted the betterment of our neighbour, brother and friend. Perhaps then as 1Malaysia we could appreciate the fact that in the grand scheme of things, we are all part of one great humanity. Honestly, I used to perceive One Malaysia as a political slogan until I read this set up of 1 Malaysia Foundation. Diversity of ethnicity, language and culture can never become one. Thus, the key is to understand, and to be understood. Thereby, all citizens can live in harmony with mutual respects. So, what ONE Malaysia could means most to me, is a fair business playing field. With the advancement of today’s network communication, no one can continue to hide in isolation. We should take the leap and start prospering the country with strong entrepreneur’s ability. We should not confine ourselves to think an earning of one is an expense of another. Let’s be competitive and redefine the standards. To me, It should be something above race and religion. Eventually "Freedom" will prevails. Beside that, 1Malaysia is more like a "one nation sharing the same spirit of patriotism". perhaps we should name it as "1Malaysian", then we're talking about unity. 1Malaysia is more like a "one nation sharing the same spirit of patriotism". perhaps we should name it as "1Malaysian", then we're talking about unity.

... society of Malaysia Maryam Azizullah – Excursion Kuala Lumpur 2014 Multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society of Malaysia Malaysia is known as an Asian Tiger State due to its quick dynamic development and its economic growth after independence, but is characterized by the colonial history and old structures. It is also known for its multi- ethnic and multi-cultural society. Its diversity of races, religions and cultures characterizes the country and influences the everyday lives of the population. The Essay will briefly describe the range of ethnic groups, the related challenges of the past and current issues with a closer look at the new concept of the Government named ‘1Malaysia’. 1. Ethnic groups and religions The Malay population consists of two main ethnic groups, the ‘Bumiputeras’ and the ‘non-Bumiputeras”. The ‘Bumiputeras’ are Malays and other indigenous groups, as for example the ‘Orang Asli’ and constitute the majority with 60.5 % of the population. The second major group consist of Chinese (26 %) and Indian (8%) people, most of whom migrated during the colonial period as foreign workers. Working on tin mines and rubber plantations during the colonial period, they now represent a socioeconomic well established middle-class with high a number of well educated people who are working in the professional white-collar jobs (Chaulia 2003). Beside these three major ethnic groups, there are other ethnic...

TIA was established in 2008, and was renamed 1Malaysia Development Berhad on January 2009. In his announcement on 22 July 2009, Prime Minister Najib Razak said the decision to expand TIA into a federal entity was made to enable its benefits to reach a broad spectrum of Malaysians rather than to the residents of only one state. 1MDB focuses on strategic development projects in the areas of energy, real estate, tourism and agribusiness. 1MDB has a three-tier check-and-balance system comprising a Board of Advisors, a Board of Directors and a senior management team. The Board of Advisors is chaired by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak. Based in the issues of 1MDB, the RM 425 million profit between September the 25th 2009 and March the 31st 2010 raised many criticisms and controversies on the lack of transparency given to 1MDB's accounts. Tony Pua, DAP Member of Parliament for...

...AS MALAYSIANS of all races prepare to commemorate the 53rd Merdeka anniversary, I would like to stress once again the very fundamentals that have brought us together which are the very principles contained in the Rukun Negara, our national philosophy. Through its five tenets (Belief in God; Loyalty to the King and Country; Upholding the Constitution; Rule of Law, and Good Social Behaviour and Morality) the Rukun Negara has formed the principles of our nationhood and these should be inculcated in our younger generation who are the future leaders of our country. The Rukun Negara is our guide for nation-building and should be respected by all. It is a shared vision for national unity and its principles should always be upheld and practised. Many people are taking unity for granted. Even more saddening is that 40 years after the proclamation of the Rukun Negara, it appears that many have forgotten about its five tenets and what they stand for, while others still need to be reminded about the national philosophy. Some have again played to the race gallery for their own personal agenda and selfish ends. This is not a healthy development for in a multi-racial, mutli-religious and multi-cultural country like Malaysia, continuous effort must be made by all Malaysians to nurture and reinforce unity. We must be prepared to reduce our strong sense of ethnicity in order to achieve a “Bangsa Malaysia”. Malaysians should start accepting each other as Malaysians regardless...

...One Malaysia The first thing that comes across my mind when I heard about 1Malaysia is it must be a new political agenda conducted by the government to win people‟s heart. It seems to me that it is a trend for every prime minister to create a vision or measure once they are appointed. I don‟ quite sure about the previous prime minister but I remember Tun Mahathir Muhammad came up with a vision that is Vision 2020. Later, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi came up with Islam Hadhari. Now, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced to achieve 1 Malaysia. As it appears to be sort of political measures, many people think that it is nothing much but a political plan created by the prime ministers so that they have an issue to talk about throughout the years as a prime minister. This is my opinion about one Malaysia. Just like Islam Hadhari that no longer being concerned by people, the same thing might happen to 1Malaysia. Therefore, in this essay, I would like to talk about the success and failures of three measures taken by government to fulfill the objective of realizing the concept of 1 Malaysia. The first thing I would like to talk about is the measures taken to avoid racial polarization in education. There are three different types of school in this country; vernacular school, national school and vision school. The issue that has long been debated is about the relevance of vernacular school. in the article Malaysian vernacular schools to continue to beapart of the education system:...

...their lives. When Cardinal Richelieu's guards appear to arrest d'Artagnan and the three musketeers, the four men win the battle that follows even though they are outnumbered. The reason for their success was that they were united according to their famous motto “All for one and one for all.” This brings me to my topic today that is “1 MALAYSIA” which portrays national unity. 1Malaysia is an on-going programme designed by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak on 16 September 2010, calling for the cabinet, government agencies, and civil servants to more strongly emphasise ethnic harmony, national unity, and efficient governance. An official logo and slogan has been introduced along with the launch of the 1Malaysia concept. The official logo is the symbol of '1' which incorporates the national “Jalur Gemilang” flag and the word Malaysia. RM 38 million has been spent by the government to promote 1 Malaysia since 2010. Improving government efficiency is an important aspect of 1Malaysia.The use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) is an important part of the 1Malaysia effort. This ideology is campaigned throughout the nation with the help of the National Civics Bureau, NGOs, and the media. Furthermore there are 1 Malaysia Clinics, !
