The Habits of Good Students and Bad Students

...The habits of good students and bad students I always believe that the key to an effective study is to learn and adopt good study habits. The difference between good students or bad students depends on how they apply and develop study habits that could help them to study efficiently and effectively. Good students always enjoy some of the great habits that help them to be more productive. The first habit is focusing in the class. That is considered one of the greatest habits to adopt. Because they can learn more, decrease the time of study out the class, take notes and participate with others. The second habit is studying in groups. Students in groups can exchange their notes, reduce distractions if they were studying alone, and learn from each other when they struggle to understand concepts. The third habit is to set a study plan from the first day of school. They always prepare and organize their materials; they prioritize the most important tasks and manage enough time to study before tests. On the other hand, bad students always struggle from the habit of procrastinating and plan to work up to a deadline. This habit causes stress, and make students panic to focus and study. In addition, bad students don’t minimize lifestyle distraction. They don’t pick a quiet environment to study or full of distractions such as technology. Moreover, another bad habit is to study all night and go to school with no sleep. Finally, the most important...

What Makes a Good Student

...What makes a good student? Personally, I am a very visual learner, so I take my own notes and color them with pens and highlighters to draw more attention and make it easier to recall them. Talking out loud when studying is another strategy that I find to be very effective when studying. There is no simple answer when it comes to the question of what makes good student. It’s widely known that everyone learns differently, and some people are more tuned to one way of learning over another. All that being said, it’s a little bit ironic that even though we learn and absorb material differently, we are still tested by the same means. I’ve given this question a lot of thought and while I think more and more about it, I find my answer to have changed a lot from my initial response. Yes you can easily list ten things off the top of your mind that make a “good” student, like: attentiveness, attendance, respect, doing what is asked (homework), being interactive, coming prepared, and being on top of your time management etc--- but I find that it really depends on what your definition of a good student is in the first place. Obviously most people think that a “good” student is one that receives high grades; but on the contrary, I think what makes a good student is someone passionate and who carries the will to learn and educate them self. I personally hate school, but love education. I believe that our education system is very flawed. The way our system is set up now is geared...

School Uniforms Are Good for Students and Parents

...School Uniforms are Better for Parents and Students Denise Smith Rasmussen College Author Note This written assignment is being submitted on December 11, 2014, for Sabine Meyer’s G124 English Composition course. School Uniforms are Better for Parents and Students School uniforms and dress codes have been a controversy among schools, private and public, since as early as the 1900’s. In 1932, for example, an Indiana high school principal supported uniforms and thought them to “eliminate class distinctions in high school and placing the poor on an equal footing with the rich” (Bodine, 2003, p. 1). Today, eighty years later, both parents and school officials see the benefits of a uniform or dress code. With clothing costs increasing every year, some parents are finding it difficult to afford multiple school outfits at the beginning of every school season. In addition, particularly for middle school and high school, children are not dressed properly for school and are showing more skin than is deemed appropriate. Lastly, uniforms would reduce peer pressure and social pressure students face these days among their classmates based on their clothing style choices and the style differences (Firmin, Smith & Perry, 2006). Therefore, although children would much prefer to choose their own clothing for school, a dress code or uniform is a logical solution for parents because economic pressures are reduced, they have comfort in knowing that their children are dressed appropriately...

Should Students Get Paid for Good Grades?

...Should Students Get Paid For Good Grades? As kids, children get a candy for being on there best behavior. In middle school or high school, students get spoiled for either getting good grades or acing an exam. In society, grown ups get paid for their duties that comes from their job. In today’s society, it looks like students are getting paid for good grades. Although cash incentives motivates students to study for a test, or getting good grades. Or can there be other ways to reward the students. The question to me is, Should students get rewarded with money for good grades? Or should they not be getting paid for good grades? I do agree that students can get motivated to study if they are getting paid do so. Providing a reward can enable the students to focus and do their work in class. However, therefore I strongly disagree that students shouldn’t get paid for receiving good grades or acing exams. Honestly, getting good grades is expected from your parents, its like saying “I deserve a car since I graduated high school”. No, you’re expected to graduate from high school no matter what. Therefore it’s an expectation, your parents expect you to get good grades. Soon the student will get used to getting money from their parents, later they will become crazy buying useless things that end up in the garbage. One school in Chicago implemented this policy to reward students based on their grades. However, after a year, suddenly the school was forced to discontinue the policy due to lack...

Students Should Not Be Paid For Good Grades Essay

...nowadays. The main cause of that might be because you are willing to reward them with money for getting good grades and now that you've said that, your child may think they can earn money by asking for money for every good deed they do. Personally, I don't think paying your child just because of good grades is a good idea. It can lead to problems about school. For example, it can increase the amount of stress, it can affect your child's natural enthusiasm to learn or be educated. Here are my reasons why I think paying your child for good grades isn't one of the best ideas. Initially, parents shouldn't pay their children due to high levels or issues or stress. According to the NEA article it states, "Many teachers, also paying students for good grades leads to practical problems in the classrooms, those of which include pressure to inflate grades...

Critic on the Monetary Reward Scheme for Good Behavior in Students

...controversy and discussion surrounding this issue by both students and parents alike. While some Singaporeans have lauded this movement, many critics have slammed this award as being too ostentatious, and plain hypocritical. This harsh criticism is not without valid reason as giving monetary awards for good behaviour can indeed result in a wrong perception on the importance of good character, encourage pretentious behaviour from students as well as place a financial burden on the Singapore government. Advocates of this award argue that the award helps to educate school students on the importance of good values and character. This is in light of the recent complaints from parents who say that too much emphasis is placed on academic achievements in our education system and too little attention is placed on the character development of their children. Thus the advocates of this award feel that the Ministry of Education is justified in their plans to award certificates and money to well behaved children. However, is this really the right way to raise the importance of good character and values? I do not think so. In fact, there is a major flaw in the logic behind this ECHA award. By handing out certificates and monetary cheques to these well behaved children, the school is placing a value on good character, and not actually encouraging students to display good character out of goodwill. Students will then see having good character as an achievement instead of a personal responsibility...

Why We Shouldn T Pay Students For Good Grades

...of parents pay students to motivate their kids to do positively at school. However, what would happen if the money will disappear? How would they do? A couple of parents wonder that if they pay their child for a good grade, their grades will increase. However, there are numerous negative effects that will happen. A few of the negative effects could also last long. Parents shouldn’t pay students for good grades because students will not improve, lose the love to learn and make children have a desire to be paid for everything. To begin with, students should not be paid for good grades because it won’t cause them to improve. From the source Paying for Good Grades is a Bad Idea, quotes, “Their research shows that simply children don’t improve because they are paid money. In fact, the opposite happens.” This means how paying students won’t enforce them into learning. The money is what they care about, not what they learn. This causes them behind once the reward is not there. Therefore, it causes them to lower their grades. The effect of this is having students unable to process the information or making them behind. Good Attendance at University Is an Out-Dated Ideal”: the Views of Staff and Students.

...“Good attendance at university is an out-dated ideal”: the views of staff and students. By Dr Ann Walker This paper reports on the second stage of an attendance monitoring project in which academic staff and students identified as good, average and poor attendees contributed to focus group discussions. In total ten focus groups were held, with thematic analysis identifying the key themes of motivators for attending, motivators against attending, assessment considerations, attendance and marks, reward versus punishment, student autonomy, purpose of attendance monitoring, and problems with monitoring attendance. The findings are discussed in relation to Social Exchange Theory and Social Learning Theory. Introduction This is the second report on a first year attendance monitoring project which is being carried out at the university where I work. In our first paper, we reported that we had found a significant correlation between absence and marks with students with poorer attendance records receiving lower end-of-semester marks. We also found that the poorer attenders were more likely to withdraw, either temporary or permanently, from the course. This finding is in keeping with those of similar studies going back over 50 years (for summary see Richie & Hargrove 2004/05). Two psychological theories, Social Exchange Theory and Social Learning Theory, have been put forward as explanations for the relationship between absence and marks. Social Exchange Theory proposes...
