A GUIDE TO VIETNAM
A GUIDE TO VIETNAM ietnam is considered as “The Pearl of South – East Asia”. Every year, it attracts a large number of international expatriates coming to live and work in this populous country. In 2011, the number of foreign employees in Vietnam exceeded 74,000 (Source: http://visatovn.com/tag/vietnam-work-permit/).
However, it is inevitable for expats to experience a great culture shock when immigrating to VN – especially Westerners. Hopefully, this guide will give you a brief insight into what you should expect when first coming to Vietnam.
How to dress in Vietnam
In Vietnam, the way people dress is quite formal and polite. They wear shirts along with formal trousers (or skirts, formal dresses) when going to work. When people go out, they often wear casual clothes (t-shirts, blouses, shorts, jeans, casual dresses, etc.), since the weather in Vietnam is quite hot and sunny. It is, however, frowned upon should people wear clothes that are too short in length or too [hở hang]. In places of worship (such as pagodas), people must wear formal clothing must be worn; pants must exceed the knees, and garment must not be too colourful.
Food in Vietnam
The food in Vietnam has its own unique taste and flavour, but, typically, very Asian. The dishes are savoury, a little bit spicy and very diverse. Though various as they are, the regular ingredients of Vietnamese dishes are fish sauce, soy sauce, shrimp paste, fresh herbs, vegetables and most importantly, rice, which is always present in every meal.
Some specialties of Vietnam include different kinds of noodles (pho, beef noodles, stir-fried noodles, etc.), rice-cake rolls and many more, varying among different parts of Vietnam. These tasty dishes are not only found in restaurants but can also be found in abundance and at a reasonable price on street-food stalls. Vegetarian food is very popular and diverse in Vietnam as well, due to the profound influence of Bhuddism.
Traffic in Vietnam
Traffic in Vietnam may be a shock for most expats when they first come here. The traffic on the road is usually heavy and chaotic, since there are so many private vehicles on the roads (cars, and a lot of motorbikes), making it seemingly impossible to cross the road. Nevertheless, you can get the hang of it in no time when you know how to. The trick when crossing the road, you should look both sides and just cross calmly and not make any sudden changes in moves, the vehicles on the road will automatically avoid you.
Tips to Cultural Etiquette in Vietnam * When using a toothpick, one must cover their mouth. * Elders must be well respected and given privilege (e.g. on buses, seats, etc.) * Both hands must be used to hand objects to older people as a way of showing respect and care.

...Why do foreign tourists avoid returning to Vietnam? Many foreign tourists, especially Japanese tourists, love to make pleasure trips to Vietnam. They are not only touched by hospitable Vietnamese people, but also the taste of Vietnamese cuisine and are impressed by spectacular handicrafts. However, despite their passion for Vietnam, they only return on short business trips. Here are several from Japanese tourists which can help us to figure out why they don’t make return pleasure trips and solve this situation. According to these tourists, there are three main problems discouraging them from making a second trip to Vietnam. First, due to the complicated traffic in big Vietnamese cities, travelling in taxis is their only safe transportation choice. Nevertheless, they are harassed (disturbed) quite often by taxi drivers who always try to make as much money as possible. Second, in many of the country’s tourist destinations, no bathrooms can be found (and the few that exist are dirty). Last but not least, there isn’t tissue available, even for women, in the bathrooms of well-known commercial centers situated in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City. Recently, this old bathroom problem has been mentioned in the newspapers and we should expect to see considerable improvements sooner or later. As for dealing with harassment from taxi drivers, the Japanese tourists suggested selling all-inclusive(all-in) price tickets for public transportation, as in Japan. This would mean that taxis based...

Vietnam and the 20th Century Experience

...Leader- the person who leads or commands a group, organization or country. Lead- to guide on a way especially by going in advance. (Webster’s dictionary, 2013). In the mid twentieth century world affairs, the United States government had a huge involvement on the outcomes of the war. President Eisenhower and President Kennedy were the leaders of the United States during this period. They provided financial and military support to South Vietnam in order to prevent a communist government. The United States feared that if South Vietnam became Communist it would develop a domino effect and many more countries would take on that type of government. President Eisenhower established the policy of “keeping Vietnam partitioned and maintaining a non-Communist state in its southern half” (Moss). Kennedy continued with Eisenhower’s take on the war. Kennedy felt that U.S. was committed to South Vietnam and had to provide support as much as possible. Kennedy developed the group MAAG (Military Assistance and Advisory Group) in order to aid and help develop a proficient army for the South Vietnamese people. President’s Kennedy’s approach towards the war was to monitor the direction of it rather than tackle it right away. As time progressed, the involvement of the U.S. became more and more tremendous. In my opinion to intervene in a war that was not our battle was ineffective. Helping South Vietnam was a good deed, but sending our troops and providing so much financial support affected the...

...Course Project Marketing Plan – First draft Luan Huynh D01491450 MKTG522 – Marketing Management Professor: Joseph Keum September 16, 12 1.0 Executive Summary 2.0 Situation Analysis In Vietnam, the trend of domestic tourist today has changed to travel oversea. People do not want to travel one place many times. Even though, there are many beautiful places in Vietnam, it is still a small country. Therefore, the number of domestic tourist is not enough to fulfill the company’s schedule of opening tours. Unlike Thai Land and other countries in the area, Vietnam just opened for foreign investment in the field of tourism a couple of years ago. In the past, the foreigners could be upset about the quality of service, infrastructure, and transportation, but they could be satisfied totally through the new face of tourism industry of this country. Beside that, according to Pacific Asia Travel Association report, the growth of international arrival into Southeast Asia increased 14% and 11% in the first two months of this year 2012 respectively (Southeast Asia Continues, 2012). It is a good point of time to establish many packages of tour for the foreign tourist. Hao Phuong Travel Company has more than ten years of experiences in the field of domestic tourism. It is the right time for company to expand its business by opening feature tour package for the foreigners. 2.1 Market Summary United States is a large country and giant market for tourism. ...and make the connection between travelers and local people. There is a new platform called Withlocals.com connects travelers with the local population directly in order to show tourists the real Vietnam. Local people can become guides who give tourists the authentic travel experiences, activities and anything such as food, beautiful sightseeing, etc. They even invite them to eat dinner with their family and this is the best experiences while you can eat local food and listen to their story about their country. For instance, we can take them to the local market to show them how the traditional Vietnamese buy food and buy the ingredients for a real home-made Pho or Banh Xeo, then take them to Cho Ben Thanh to shopping or show them the most beautiful view of Vietnam in Ha Long Bay. This is the most interesting things when you experiences real things and live their dalily life. According to Ronald Crooy, CTO of Withlocals said “The idea is to let poeple use their own skills and strengths. No one knows more about his or her community than a local! They are the experts of their area. Think about it, how amazing would it be to eat together with tourists your favorite hmoemade Banh Xeo and earn money at the same time?”. By becoming a guide, we are showing the tourists the cuture of Vietnam, how friendly and warm the Vietnamese people are. The second ways is tourism organizations can use social...

John Storey Bringing It All Back Home Vietnam War

...Not only did television become an important tool shaping public opinion, but also music became a form of protest. Antiwar music of the 1960s and 1970s expressed public outcry against the war in Vietnam. John Storey's chapter "Bringing It All Back Home: American Popular Song and the War in Vietnam," discussed the response of American popular song to the war in Vietnam. John Storey, "Bringing It All Back Home: American Popular Song and the War in Vietnam," in The Vietnam Era, ed. Michael Klein (London: Pluto Press, 1990), 82. The first song to speak out against the war in Vietnam was a song that came out of the so-called folk revival that devolved in and around the coffee houses of Greenwich Village between 1958 and 1964. The music of Greenwich Village was divided between traditionalists, who wished to maintain and reproduce past traditions of songs. The second group was topicalists, who wished to use song to address contemporary issues. It was the second group which eventually addressed the issues raised by the war in Vietnam. Musicians such as Bob Dylan, Country Joe McDonald, Pete Seeger and various others wrote and performed songs that referred directly and indirectly to Vietnam. Storey, 82-83. The...

Invisible Hand in the Vietnamese Context

...Invisible Hand in the Vietnamese context Introduction Adam Smith is an infamous political economist in the UK and around the world. He has many valuable arguments among which this essay will refer to the theory of "invisible hand" which was coined in The Wealth of Nations. The invisible hand is essentially a natural phenomenon that guides free markets and capitalism through competition for scarce resources by maintaining equilibrium between the supply and demand of resources. Also, as market participants compete, driven by their own needs and wants, they involuntarily benefit society at large without the help of goverment. This essay will examine the core theoretical ideas behind Adam Smith’s invisible hand theory, focusing on the negative aspects, and show that the negative aspects are more prominent when applied to the article ‘Power trader accused of abusing monopoly position’ Understanding of theory Adam Smith's invisible hand theory sets the foundation for laissez-faire economic philosophy, which describe the self-regulating behavior and minimize the role of government intervention and taxation in the free markets .Smith argued the most crucial variable in the market is the price and its functions is providing information telling people what to do and presenting incentive for them to act on this information. Both companies and workers are guided, as if by an invisible hand, to produce the goods and services that are most desired by consumers, which occurs when all of...

The Vietnam Conflict

...The Vietnam Conflict Introduction It is difficult to pinpoint the exact reasons why the U.S. became involved in the Vietnam Conflict. Perhaps one of the more convincing reasons can be attributed to the strong disdain most Americans had for Communism. The U.S. government feared that Communism, if not prevented, would spread throughout the nations. The federal government used President Eisenhower’s “domino theory,” which stated, “if one country in Southeast Asia collapsed to Communism then surrounding countries would soon fall” to rally support for their intentions to save Vietnam from Communism (Davidson, 2011, p. 839). The true reasons for U.S. involvement in the Vietnam Conflict is debatable, however one thing is clear, the war caused further division in a country already suffering from its own social issues. There had been conflict in the Vietnam long before the U.S. became involved in the conflict. Vietnam had been occupied by foreign countries for many years, and by 1940, Vietnam was under both French and Japanese rule. Ho Chi Minh, a Communist Vietnamese revolutionary leader, vowed to create a Vietnam that was independent of foreign rule (Davidson, 2011, p. 839). Ho Chi Minh established the Viet Minh whose main purpose was to liberate Vietnam from French and Japanese control. Northern Vietnam supported the Viet Minh efforts to create an independent Vietnam and joined forces with southern communist Vietcong to overthrow South Vietnam and unite Vietnam under one...
