They had already made the long, difficult journey from Africa's interior but just barely. Out of the roughly 20 million who were taken from their homes and sold into slavery, half didn't complete the journey to the African coast, most of those dying along the way” (T.M.P. 1) The Middle Passage was used by many ships carrying slaves to the Americas. African slaves were brought to the New World unwillingly. They were either purchased or kidnapped. The Middle Passage took about ninety days. However, at times it would take roughly a few months to transport Africans. None of them knew of the horrible journey they were about to encounter. “The system by which these human beings were been transported across the ocean was reported to be the worst of its kind in the history of mankind” (Adeuyan 40). The conditions aboard the ships crossing the Atlantic were horrible. Hundreds of slaves were packed below the deck of the ships. Slaves had to go to the bathroom right where they were laying. They had absolutely no room to themselves. All the slaves were shackled together. Most slaves didn’t even make the whole journey. They would catch diseases that quickly spread among slaves and many died due to unsanitary conditions. The most common disease killing the slaves on the ships was smallpox. Most of the time, the sick were thrown...

...Enkidu entering Gilgamesh’s life, Gilgamesh’s actions could be said to be villainous. There are several controversial opinions on whether Gilgamesh is considered an epic hero due to the fact that at the beginning of the epic he was not a hero at all. The actual definition of an epic hero is an important figure from a history or legend, usually favored by or even partially descended from deities. The hero participates in a cyclical journey or quest, faces adversaries that try to defeat him in his journey, gathers allies along his journey, and returns home significantly transformed by his journey. (www.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100118124521AAYCDtq ). Gilgamesh could not fit the definition of the word “hero”, however following this given definition, Gilgamesh would technically be considered an epic hero. Gilgamesh is two- thirds God, he does go on a journey as well. He became friends with Enkidu along the way. He faces an adversity by losing Enkidu, but still returns home a changed man. When the story begins, Gilgamesh is known as a horrible ruler. For instance he was deflowering brides the night before their wedding day. Although he claimed that he was being led by the Gods to do that, I don’t agree with it no matter what the reason. In my eyes, a hero should be doing good things for the people, not hurt them. A hero should help people and perform good deeds for the community. Gilgamesh was doing the exact opposite. Enkidu came into Gilgamesh’s life originally to...

...Heart of Darkness There are many themes that run through the novel Heart of Darkness. There are however two main and significant ones. These are the theme of restraint and man's journey into self. The importance of restraint is stressed throughout Heart of Darkness. In the novel Marlow is saved by restraint, while Kurtz is doomed by his lack of it. Marlow felt different about Africa before he went, because the colonization of the Congo had "an idea at the back of it." Despite an uneasiness, he assumed that restraint would operate there. He soon reaches the Company station and receives his first shock, everything there seems meaningless. He sees no evidence here of that "devotion to efficiency" that makes the idea work. In the middle of this, Marlow meets a "miracle". The chief accountant has the restraint that it takes to get the job done. He keeps up his appearance and his books are in "apple-pie order." Marlow respects this fellow because he has a backbone. "The cannibals some of those ignorant millions, are almost totally characterized by restraint." They outnumber the whites "thirty to five" and could easily fill their starving bellies. Marlow "would have as soon expected restraint from a hyena prowling amongst the corpses of a battlefield." The cannibal’s action is "one of those human secrets that baffle probability." This helps Marlow keep his restraint, for if the natives can possess this quality Marlow feels he certainly can. Kurtz is...

...possible worlds. This statement is false. With all the events that have gone against this belief, there is no way Candide could possibly live in the best of all possible worlds. In order to argue that Candide lives in the worst of all possible worlds, one must define what the best of all possible worlds is like. In a best of all possible worlds, Candide would have not encountered any of the negative and bad events along his journey. He wouldn’t have had to kill numerous people and to begin with the journey wouldn't have existed. This is because...

... My Journey to America I’m a 12 years old boy who is from china, and I’m actually on my way to America. I don’t know why I feel so nervous, is that because I’m going to a new country, a new culture? I have no clue/ answer that might explain how I feel right now. It is a hard journey as a result of it’s taking so long, and I’m getting so tired! We just passed three days so far, and we have around five more days left. Five days later, finally we are interring America! Oh my God! I see a lot of different nations from other countries around the world. That makes me feel scared. Now my parents are looking for a place to live in. They finally found a room. I was so exhausted because it was a long journey and I need to rest. When I interred this room I was totally shocked! The room is so crowded with different nations. They call that a melting pot because it’s a mixture of different cultures who are living together in one place. Next morning I woke up and I found trash surrounded me; there was a big pile of trash actually. The room was dirty, slummy, no sanitation. I felt sick when I saw that! I can’t believe that I’m going to live here for the rest of my life! Now my dad got a job, and I’ll work with him. We are on our way to there, (sighs) almost there. We finally arrived to our work on time. It was a hard work to do, but I tried my best. I got freaked out when I saw who is hurt got fired just because he got hurt! It was a horrible day. SERIOUSLY A HORRIBLE DAY! I got more...

...their background. This story is going to talk about the life of an immigrant leaving her home country of Poland on a journey she will never forget. Her journey starts in Poland in 1905 and ends in New York. My name is Lisa and I am a 43-year old woman, and I live in Eastern Europe (Poland). Things are not so great where I live right now. The reason for my wanting to go to the United States typically rested on the push of hardships at home - including a lack of economic opportunity, religious discrimination and political persecution - and the pull of the expectation of a better life in the "Promised Land" ("Immigrating To America, 1905", 2005). I have chosen to leave everything and everyone I know behind to better my life in the United States. There has been talk of jobs in the U.S., and that is where my voyage will take me. My voyage will start as I begin my travel across Europe to reach Ellis Island, because I cannot afford first- or second-class tickets to board the steamship, I will have to go through processing before continuing on my journey to “The Promise Land.” My journey to get to a seaport covered hundreds of miles across Europe. I traveled by foot mostly, but got a ride on a horse every now and then. Once I boarded the steamship, I was sick to death of how I was going to have to live for the next twelve days. I boarded a steamship to make the journey across the ocean to the Harbor of New York. The steamship...

...“Gottlieb Mittelberger, a German Immigrant, Portrays the Difficulties of Immigration” is a personal account or diary from Gottlieb Mittelberger, an immigrant from Germany. Mittelberger’s personal account provides his experience in his journey to Pennsylvania in 1750 and return to Germany in 1754. Mittelberger was a German male immigrant who worked as a schoolmaster, which is also known as a teacher. Mittelberger is arguing that indentured servants would be better off in their homelands than in these new countries they are traveling to overseas. During his journey he traveled with many indentured servants and went into detail on how the conditions on these ships were absolutely horrible. In his document, Gottlieb Mittelberger states, “But...

...In "The Cask of Amontillado" Edgar Allan Poe takes us on a journey into the mind of what many would perceive as a mad man. The story tells of what seems to be a horrible revenge made even more horrible by the fact that the vengeance is being taken when no real offense had been known. This notion sets the mood for true evil. The plot of the story is simple. Montresor takes revenge on his friend Fortunato by luring him into the wine cellar under the family estate. There he leads Fortunato into the depths of the catacombs where he buries him alive by walling him into a tomb in the wall. Was Montresor mad or was it premeditated murder? "Nemo me impune lacessit" (No one attacks me with impunity). This seems to be the theme running through the short story. Along with the Montresor Coat of Arms; a serpent being crushed under a gold foot and the saying "Nemo me impune lacessit". Is this the motto of a vengeful family who believes revenge is justified or of a mad man who has heard that motto so many times, that he feels revenge is justified at any cost? Knowing Fortunato was intoxicated from the wine and spirits of celebrating Carnival as well as in a Jester costume he is wearing, Montresor takes advantage of Fortunato knowledge of fine wines and entices him with a "Cask of Amontillado" (Barrel of Spanish Sherry) Montresor has just acquired to lure Fortunato to the vaults under the family estate. This sounds like a precalculated plan for revenge. Montresor never states what the insult...

...that they restrict themselves (Erin Pracht).” Society attempts to conform everyone to what they believe is good enough. I let myself believe I wasn’t good enough to do anything during my life. I believed I was just another soul waiting to die. I didn’t fit into the standards where I would be considered good enough. I had this mindset up until a few months ago when I opened my mind to a new beginning. I started to believe I was good enough to be what I want to be. I felt my self confidence rise up steadily. I am not afraid to fight against the horrible monster in which society has created. Society has no chance against someone who believes in themselves and their abilities. I believe I can prove society wrong in the future. Fighting for my dream to be a professional soccer player or a psychologist will continue until I fulfill the dream. I will continue to battle through the obstacles of society, hopefully changing some minds during the journey. Society was able to ruin me one time during my childhood, and now I will fight to be sure it doesn’t ruin me...

He soon arrived on the coast of Africa where he was beginning his horrible journey to Barbados through the difficult Middle Passage of the Atlantic Ocean.
