A New Beginning As many can tell you, life for a minority in the 1950’s was rough considering the strides that had been taken in the name of human and civil rights until that point. Slavery had long ended yet segregation was still common practice in various parts of the United States. Although every American is promised life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, it’s apparent how life can be different based on subtle differences from person to person. A Raisin in the Sun gives us a slight glimpse into what life could have been like for a black family during those times. The family in question is the Youngers. They are a small, close knit group who all want to find some sense of security in an unfair world. Lena, Walter, Beneatha and Ruth Younger all have a dream as to how they can escape the life of poverty that they have been living yet it still comes at a significant cost with the death of the patriarch, Mr. Younger. The Youngers are all waiting for his life insurance check of $10,000 to arrive while each member of the family has an idea of how they would like to spend the money. Lena, the matriarch, would like to use the money as a down payment on a house so that her family may have a fresh, new dignified start. The apartment they have been living in is cramped, worn and dark with no room to grow for their expanding family just like Lena’s house plant that receives just enough light and energy to stay alive despite the conditions facing it. Walter, Lena’s son, on the other hand wants to use the money to invest in a liquor store with his friend Willy Harris therefore ending their financial worries forever. While Walter sees a chance to capture some financial security for his family, Lena on the other hand sees this as a chance to keep their family together. She knows that it is more than just a house that will allow them to escape their dark dwelling. Their home is the main link that keeps together as it seems it’s one of the few things they have that can be counted on. When Lena finally decides to use the money for a house, they decide to purchase one in Clybourne Park, an all-white neighborhood. When word spreads that a black family is moving into the neighborhood, Mr. Linder from the Clybourne Park Improvement Association is dispatched to offer the Youngers money in exchange for moving out. He states that the neighbor believes that, “…Negro families are happier when they live in their own community.” (Hansberry 407) Instead of taking the easy way out, they decide to stick together as family in what could potentially be a hostile environment. Yet, despite this, the Youngers still seem somewhat content with the prospect of their new lives as they know it means a bright, new beginning as opposed to the shady dwelling they were so used to. Even as their family faced an uncertain future, Lena helped coral her family together by using their new house as a central point. Hansberry emphasized this by highlighting the differences between the dark, cramped apartment and their bright, new home. As the family is leaving the apartment for the last time towards a very uncertain future, it can be said that even though they couldn’t achieve their individual dreams, their collective dream of staying together as a family was fulfilled.

Managing Transitions Making Most of Change

...August 2005 Managing Transitions Making the Most of Change By William Bridges This is the second edition of Bridges’ popular 1991 book that has sold 400,000 copies. He says that people do not have problems with change itself, but rather with transitions. The change is the situation, i.e., the new boss, the move, the reorganization, etc. The transition is “psychological. It is the three-phased process people go through as they internalize and come to terms with the details of the new situation that the change brings about.” “People have to bring their hearts and minds to work,” so when change comes along, “transition management…is a way of dealing with people that makes everyone feel more comfortable.” The first phase is Letting Go—the ending of the old. People need to deal with their losses. Next is the “neutral zone,” when the old is gone and the new is not fully operational. Psychological realignments take place. And then there is the new beginning. People develop a new identity, experience new energy and purpose, and make change begin to happen. How to Get People to Let Go You start by identifying who will suffer losses and try to understand them. You sympathize publicly and permit people to grieve. Find ways to compensate (non-financial) for the losses, if possible. Of course, communication is a top priority, clearly defining details over and over is important. Ceremonies to “mark the ending” are appropriate to honor the past. Leading People Through the Neutral Zone...

New Beginning

...Going back to studying is a big step in my life having left formal education for over fifteen years now. It is not going to be an easy task with the demands and challenges of higher education but I am prepared and ready to face it. And in order to have a smooth transition to higher education, I need to work on the academic areas which I have always struggled with. All the while I have been working in the health and social care industry as a support worker supporting people with learning disability, mental health issues and autism to lead a more fulfilling and independent life. I help to promote choice, privacy and dignity, and believe that everyone should benefit from equal opportunity and not be limited or treated any less because of their disability. I have successfully undertaken and passed my National Vocational Qualification level 3 in Health and Social care. This course has enabled me to advance in my knowledge and improve my skills and has also enabled me to evaluate my daily working practices and to continuously reflect on my work. I had the responsibility of supervising other staff and preparing the monthly rota. I have attended mandatory trainings such as (Health and safety, fire awareness, food and hygiene, safeguarding vulnerable adults, person centred active support, medication administration, and to mention a few) to ensure that that I fulfil my role as a senior support worker and provide the best possible care. My responsibilities has led me to other training...

...Sahebi, Sherwin Conrad vs. Achebe 1. From the tone of Conrad’s view of Africa, he gives it a dark and mysterious view of the forests is never ending and nothing is silent. 2. The detail he gives shows how African life never rests among the winding paths that rivers lead you and how he is always on his feet ready for the worst to happen. He talks about the air being thick and dense with the tall tress surrounding the area where sunshine was blocked from the forest bring a view of darkness and fear. 3. Achebe views Africa as a marvelous place where he thrives and people are happy living according to their belief. 4. The details given from her shows the happiness of the clan dancing to the ekwe, and corrects to a celebration of a man taking the title of his clan. 5. The reaction Achebe has to Conrad’s choices are anti-parallel to each other. In Achebe’s paragraph’s, differences of tone, syntax, and detail are shown. Achebe’s tone is very unique in the way she writes her paragraphs. In the first and second paragraph, she talks about the clans performing peaceful dances. “Then from the distance came the faint beating of the ekwe…” a peaceful dance from a distant clan. “It is an ozo dance,” the man said from themselves. Achebe uses the Ibo language to show a difference of tone to indicate how the clans would talk among themselves. Conrad’s style of tone is much more different from Achebe. He uses more of a suspenseful tone than anything. Conrad says “we penetrated deeper and deeper...

New Beginning

...A toast to a new beginning Growing up in suburban Lahore, New Year’s eves used to be a quiet event. Yet excitement for the New Year was evident in the spirit of every child and adult. New Year’s Eve was the celebration of a new beginning. Something to be jubilant about. It was a time for a simple gesture of wishing health and wealth to all, and the best that life could give to all. Indeed, the New Year promised a bright future. Even today, the charm of the New Year’s Eve continues to thrill. Despite the face paced life, it offers a chance for friends and family to come together and celebrate a joyous occasion. It is a new hope harbored into an old fashioned cheer. It is here, as the clock approaches midnight that spirits are rekindled. However, standing united, facing a new beginning, my peers do stop for a moment and remember the past floating by. True, the year 2009 saw numerous challenges, many battles and much heartache. The economy painted a bleak picture. The woes of a common man mounted to new levels. Our land was in constant grip of terror. We lost many fellow countrymen as brave martyrs of terrorism. Indeed 2009 was a difficult year. It made the transition to 2010 a solemn attempt. But that’s the beauty of a New Year. A moment artificial yet so profound. It brings a new dawn. It is a chance to redeem oneself. It offers a brand new path to success. It is an opportunity to rise above and make a difference. A new year brings with it the making of new goals, settings...

A Blank Canvas

...of paper, people sometimes can’t help but quiver? A sudden rush of fear and anxiety hangs over them. For a student or scholar in particular, it is not simply the beginning to reach the end of the test or the ‘be all end all’ in achieving something worthwhile in life. It provides the user with a key to delve into the realm of imagination with the purpose of gaining happiness or life’s true meaning. Imagination is something which is unique to ever individual on earth past or present, because like the world we live in, imagination is in constant change, adaption and always learning. When unlocked and encompassed with the power of the mind, imagination can achieve endless means in theory. For an artist this may be a chance to create something new, something colourful or perhaps even dark. For a scholar it creates a chance of expression through words. Right to expression however, is key to any successful contemporary or classical work most importantly. Whether for good or bad intentions it creates the basis for which to explore and perhaps even indulge. A blank canvas creates a new beginning. Like a second chance in life, an empty sheet can give an individual a new beginning and allows him/her to forget the past, it is no longer relevant, unless the artist depicts it that way. If it were not for blank canvases nothing new would ever be imagined just simply copied, tweaked and regurgitated in another...

What Is the Relationship Between Rebranding and Regenerating?

...What is the relationship between rebranding and regeneration? Though the two concepts are often confused or used synonymously, rebranding and regeneration refer to two very different (but intrinsically linked) aspects of creating a new identity or “fresh start” for something, or somewhere. Regeneration typically refers to encouraging growth and restoration in an area that has previously displayed symptoms of decline, primarily the economy but also relating to other social, economic and environmental aspects of an area. Nonetheless, it is an essential aspect of creating a new beginning for an area because without a stable economic foundation, an area can struggle to grow and strive as it lacks the financial capability to continue expanding. Regeneration is seen as a long and continuous process that transforms a depleting area (in terms of economy and physical features) into a growing, stable area. Rebranding, however, refers to a much more varied and inclusive type of change – instead focussing on developing a place to change or improve its image and public opinion. This usually consists of two different actions: regeneration and reimaging. Rebranding as a concept usually includes regeneration as one of the two fundamental steps to positively transform or rebrand an area. Unlike regeneration, rebranding focuses on improving the actual physical infrastructure and environment of an area – the “inside” – as well as improving the public opinion towards the area and making...

Strength and Challenge

...Enrolling in a college course was a new beginning for me because I haven’t been very good when it comes down to writing essays. But with the hard work and dedication that I put in this course I surprisingly became a much better one. I came into this class prepared, and knowing that it would be difficult and a new change compared to any other class I have taken before. This course has exposed me to many different writing technique and different writing skills that helped improve my writing in everyway possible. Throughout this English 1301 class I have learned self discipline, and how to handle stress. English is not quite my favorite subject, but during this course I discovered my weaknesses and strongest areas. As the days progressed during the course so did the challenges I had to overcome. One of my personal challenges I faced was the word count I had to meet in order to complete the assignment. By having a certain limit I had to reach not only made me use more details but challenged me in elaborating the topic I was talking about. In any college class you are expected to meet these high standards which I found very difficult but progressed within time and became better at writing more sufficient. Another obstacle I faced during the course was the four letter word time. Time played a crucial role in this course because it kept me from slacking off, and taught me to put school before anything else. At the beginning of the course we were given a syllabus of assignments...

Watershed

...that I would like to erase for good. As I look back, I think the one event that really turned my life around was joining the Navy, 20 years later and I must say it was a decision well made. As I graduated high school my thought process was to be the first person in my family to go to college. Here I am an 18 year old boy from Queens, New York having to travel more than an hour to college, taking two buses and a train. Now this does not sit well with someone when it is in the middle of winter and you feel like the city is just eating you up. It was at that point where I figured college life was not for me. Transitioning from a place where I knew plenty of people to an environment that was completely made of strangers also contributed to my decision on leaving college. Now here I am attending college, it feels like things have come full circle; I am now laying the foundation for my children setting the example that I did not have while I was growing up. As for my future, I am looking forward to gaining more experience through more watershed moments and hopefully I have the awareness to enjoy the transition from the ending to the new beginnings. Situation Analysis When I was 18 years old going to college living with my parents, I have made up my mind to drop out of college and join the military. I did not know...

We know what Marcus and Will thinks, which gives us a perspective from several different angles and in this case keeps the story fresh and exciting. The author has done an incredibly good job, as he has managed not to lose the viewer/reader through the multiple viewpoints, and that is because the transitions are well done. The narrator is a 3rd person narrator and it is character-bounded to Marcus and Will. In the movie and the book, there are two main characters – Marcus and Will, who both are round characters because they develop much though the story. Marcus is a special 12-year old boy and seems very grown-up for his age. In the beginning of the story he is very influenced by his mother, Fiona, but as the story...

I was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela on June 21, 1994. I grew up believing in self-expression, showing yourself and never hiding who you really are from others, part of my envelopment as a child and a teenager has been surrounded by political issues, involving my country into sad and hard situations, destroying our culture, education and economy, forcing and scaring the people who decided to trust into a different opinion against the government, those ones will be recognized as “Traitors” and “Enemies of the nation” at least that was the way they used to call them. Understand and Coping with Change

...emerges.  In fact, when it comes to forces of nature, the most widely addressed and studied topic is what physicists call entropy – the process by which dynamic systems that include (a) people, (b) organizations, (c) automobiles, and (d) solar systems, gradually fall apart.  It is hard to make significant changes in any human group without changing an individual’s behavior and the underlying meaning that gives rise to their behavior (Kegan & Lahey, 2001).  Once change does occur, it is inevitably disruptive.  The fact is Americans in general have always been in some state of transition with Old World families that can be traced back to the home of their ancestors.  New destinations and new career opportunities keep people moving driven by faith and a belief of better things to come.  Even though it opens the doors to new opportunities, most people are hesitant to embrace change. An extensive transformation is taking place in organizational management between employers and employees.  The lessons learned about how job security, training, and internal development that improve employee assurance and performance, have given way to a...
