Managerial Economics

...1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background to the Study The effect of training and manpower development on employee’s productivity and organization performance has attracted considerable interest in the analytical and empirical literature. On the whole, human resources management theory has paid considerable attention to this debate; however, the theoretical predictions are ambiguous. Depending on their underlying assumptions, some approaches predict that the performance of an organization is necessarily based on innovative labour force, technology, quality management, and customer satisfaction; while others see training as a tool in the hands of human resources managers to activate and empower the productive base of an organization (Dhamodharan, 2010). Barron and Hagerty (2001) asserted that employee training and manpower development is very vital to job productivity and organization performance, since the formal educational system does not adequately provide specific job skills for a position in a particular organization. While, few individuals may have the requisite skills, knowledge, abilities and competencies needed to fit into a specific job function, some others may require extensive training to acquire the necessary skills to be able to fit in a specific job function and also make significant contribution to the organization’s performance. Guest (2007) asserted that human capital theory provides evidence which indicates that training and education raises the productivity of workers...

Training and Development

...PROPOSAL TOPIC: THE EFFECTS OF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF KOFORIDUA POLYTECHNIC STAFF GEORGE ASANTE EDUAH (SB/DHR/13/0020) MBA HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT 1.1 Background of the Study The Workers or Employees working in or for an organization are now being considered as ‘human assets’ even though different terms like ‘staff’, ‘manpower’, ‘personnel’, etc. are still in currency. The emerging trend is to treat them as ‘human assets’ or ‘human resources’. The success of any organization depends on appropriate use of human assets available in the organization. All other assets could only be supplementary to human assets. Towards augmenting the human resources and to cope with changes – both internal and external, the organization has to concentrate necessarily on developing the ability, wisdom and skills of its workforce. Again employees are said to be the most valuable assets in an organization, and that an organization is only as good as its people. Only through them can organizations achieve their objectives. It is therefore important that employees possess the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities (SKAs) in order that organizations achieve their goals and remain competitive and successful. A formal approach for organizations to update employees’ acquisition of job-related SKAs is by training. From a human capital theory perspective, training is investment rather than consumption. Research claimed that training is an important factor that could...

While it is clear that certain teachers are more effective than others at increasing student performance, there is considerably less consensus on whether specific, observable teacher characteristics such as education or experience produce higher performance. While most research has focused on general skills, school districts and states often rely on in-service staff development as a way to improve student learning.
