Candid

...Through the novel Candide , one can analyze the tone of voice Voltaire is trying to express throughout his writing. It is apparent that he did not agree with many of the beliefs and situations Candide experienced. Through his writing, he expresses his beliefs in reason, progress, and his dislike of status quo. Throughout Candide, Voltaire mocks the belief in “natural” superiority by birth. The baron’s sister, for instance, has refused to marry Candide’s father because he only had seventy-one quartering in his coat of arms, while hers had less Voltaire uses this to make the nobility’s concern over others birth look absurd. Voltaire uses exaggeration of this sort throughout the novel to expose the irrationality of various beliefs. A major character throughout the book was Pangloss. Pangloss was a philosopher and was also Candide’s mentor. Pangloss believed the world is “the best of all possible worlds.” This assumption is one that Voltaire poked fun of throughout the novel. It is very apparent that Voltaire thought this was an outrages belief. This is apparent to the reader by the way Voltaire explained the journey Candid, the old women, and other characters faced during this time. Voltaire made you question how anyone could believe the world is “the best of all worlds” when things such as rape, torture, and destruction were conflicted upon these people. He expresses his belief of reason when the old lady says that she has considered suicide. With all that she went through the...

...Accounting Standards No. 5, "Accounting for Contingencies" (FAS 5)5 may affect an enterprise's financial reporting obligations. In FAS 5, the term "contingency" is defined as "an existing condition, situation, or set of circumstances involving uncertainty as to possible gain (hereinafter a 'gain contingency') or loss (hereinafter a 'loss contingency') to an enterprise that will ultimately be resolved when one or more future events occur or fail to occur. According to FAS 5, a contingent loss should be charged to income if information is available before issuance of the financial statements indicating by fiscal year-end that a loss probably has been incurred and that the amount of such loss can be reasonably estimated. If there is a reasonable possibility that the loss will be incurred, FAS 5 generally requires the disclosure in the footnotes of the financial statements to include a discussion of the nature of the loss and either the possible range of the loss (if it can be estimated) or a statement that such loss cannot be estimated. FAS 5 provides: "Disclosure is not required of a loss contingency involving an un-asserted claim or assessment when there has been no manifestation by a potential claimant of an awareness of a possible claim or assessment unless it is...

Changing Careers, Are You Sure

...{text:bookmark-start} Getting a MBA to Change Careers {text:bookmark-end} I should change careers. That is a thought that has haunted me for years. I have known for at least nine years that being a pharmacist was not for me. How to change careers and what new career did I want were questions I had a hard time answering. After searching for answers on the internet and speaking with academic counselors from several colleges, I realized getting a MBA was a possibility. I did not know having a bachelor degree was all one needed to start the MBA program. I was under the impression that thebachelor degree needed to be in an area of business. Hopeful and excited, I decided I needed to get my MBA. Facing my parents with the idea of going back to school and changing careers was not going to be easy. I could hear their objections: you make good money, the MBA will be expensive, you do not have the time, pharmacists are in demand, you won’t ever have trouble finding a job, and finallythat is just not something you do. You have a career, stick with it. Changing careers is not that unheard of these days, as opposed to when my parents were choosing their careers. According to Holmes and Cartwright, in the 1970s and 1980s, more people started changing careers. This change was due to “the rapid rate of social, economic, and technological changes that encouraged the development of successive or multiple careers” (Holmes, 1993). The Vocational Guidance Association states that “between 1985-1988...

This is also an opportunity for the firm to take a lead in the possible scenario that Chemistry goes global as Match already has several markets around the world but has not introduced Chemistry until then. However it is important to know that eHarmony will deal with many challenges such as increasing fixed costs in facilities, operating costs and large amount of investment on research and development in order to accommodate the algorithm system in other parts of the world. Also if there is the possibility that Match does any type of merger with AOL or MSN, eHarmony could be very affected by their strong position in global markets. If the global expansion project is managed properly, there is the possibility that eHarmony could slowly get the market share loss to Chemistry back as a global expansion seems to be feasible....

Candide No Longer Want To Marry Cunégonde Summary

...Candide no longer wants to marry Cunégonde, but the baron is so insulting and Cunégonde is so insistent that Candide is determined to follow through on his promise. He consults his advisors Pangloss, Martin, and Cacambo regarding this decision. Pangloss gives a dissertation in which he proves that the young baron has no rights at all over his sister and that Cunégonde therefore has every right to marry Candide if she wishes it. Martin’s advice is to throw the baron promptly into the sea. Cacambo would suggest that the baron be returned to the galleys and then sent back to the Father General in Rome. Candide returns the Baron to his slavery in the galleys. There would be the thought of making love to Cunégonde in her current state is really unappealing to Candide, he marries her as a matter of principle. Candide and his friends acquire a farm where they live together. Goals have been achieved but Candide is unhappy. Cunégonde isn’t attractive anymore, and she and the Old Woman are grumpy. Pangloss maintains his "best of all worlds" stance, but it seems like his heart just isn’t in it anymore. Paquette and the monk show up in despair. The gang would seek the knowledge of the dervish about questions of good and evil. The group would need help but the dervish would say they can’t help. The gang would return to the farm and on their way they encounter another farmer that invites them into his house. The farmer would be inviting them to a pleasant dinner and he has found that working...

Leibniz

...Leibniz, like many thinkers of his time, was a theist - in other words he believed in God. He thought that the universe was composed of substances, chosen and maintained by God. He declared in his Theodicy that God created the world to be the best of all possible worlds, since God, as a benevolent deity, would not have created anything different. This is a difficult assumption for the modern reader to digest, as we are surrounded by examples of evil every day in the news. Leibniz proves the existence of God by a priori and a posteriori arguments. Leibniz declares that there are two kinds of truth: truths of reason, and truths of fact. Truths of reason are a priori, while truths of fact are a posteriori. Truths of reason are necessary, permanent truths, and proceeding from a known or assumed cause to a necessarily related effect (deductive). Truths of fact are contingent, empirical truths relating to or derived by reasoning from observed facts (inductive) (Davidson, 91). Both kinds of truth must have a sufficient reason. Truths of reason have their sufficient reason in being opposed to the contradictoriness and logical inconsistency of propositions which deny them (Davidson, 93). Truths of fact have their sufficient reason in being more perfect than propositions which deny them. The Priori on pre-established harmony in so far as such harmony demands an author, and this is God. The posteriori explains everything that exists must have sufficient reason for existing, and this reason...

...ASC 275-10-50-8, when it is reasonably possible that the estimate of the effect on the financial statements exists and the effect of the change would be material, disclosure regarding such estimate should be made when known information available before the financial statements are issued. Danle said that it did not believe that it was probable a loss would occur and could not reasonably estimate an exact amount of the potential loss. However, it is also stated in the paragraph 450-20-50-5 that disclosure is preferable to accrual when a reasonable estimate of loss cannot be made. Even though it is not probable that a liability had been incurred, disclosure also should be made for some loss contingencies for which there is a reasonable possibility that a loss may have been incurred. In conclusion, we believe that it was not appropriate for Danle to omit disclosure relating to the class-action litigation for the year ended December 31,...

Candide

...Candide Blog Lit 2013 Pangloss's Philosophy in Candide Throughout the book Pangloss has this ongoing philosophy that everything will always end wells and is for the best and that this world is the "best of all possible worlds" but throughout the book it proves that's likely not the case in almost every situation Candide gets him self into. Even at the end when you find out that Pangloss and the baron are actually still alive it still doesn't all seem exactly right. When Candide finally reunites with Cunagounde for good she has gotten old looking and ugly and even after all his adamant searching he debates even staying with her. Throughout the book after every horrible situation Candide gets into he usually miraculously escapes it as if some sort of fate is working with him to get him out of things. However when he finally escapes most perils he is so discontent and never satisfied that he's screws it up somehow and ends up in a worse situation than he was before. It's almost like karma is punishing him for his rash decisions like killing people on a whim with no thought about it. This ties into Pangloss's theories/attitude in that things in the end seem to find a way of working themselves out for Candide and yet he never seems satisfied and is always messing things up. In chapter 30 when he finally gets Cunagonde back she is ugly and he is only somewhat satisfied even after the giant trek to find her. And then when Pangloss and the Baron are found to be alive...

Don’t Fall in Love with One Company

...generate interest and put recruiting companies in the best possible light. When you start attending networking events, you’ll undoubtedly meet people you really like and can relate with. And you’ll hear about projects from those people that fascinate you. Eventually, you start picturing yourself working at said company and before you know it, you have a dream job you’re recruiting for. The problem with being focused on one company is that the recruiting process can be fickle and subjective. You could spend months researching, networking, and preparing to interview with your dream company. But all it takes is a single negative thought from an interviewer to crush those dreams. Even if you do everything right, there’s always the possibility that an interviewer simply won’t like you. In the world of MBA recruiting, the hiring companies definitely have an advantage: each company is going to screen several students and will only actually hire a select few. But regardless of your background, on any given MBA campus, there are plenty of companies you can recruit for. Don’t make your MBA experience entirely focused on one company. If you limit your possible outcomes for success, you’re definitely more likely to fail. Your MBA experience should be about the skills you develop, the contacts you obtain, and your overall improved professional candidacy; not whether a single company likes...

Jet Task 1

...The first option is to reproduce the whistle and package it for the cost of $100,000. We could discuss what the comfort level is with the school district in shipping the product a little later and reassure them that the lead problem has been addressed and corrected. They should be informed that a minimum of two weeks will be necessary to correct the error. Although key members of the school system may be disappointed, I believe that they will appreciate our honesty and the fact that we are trying to produce a safe and quality product. This honest approach to the problem should serve to preserve our integrity with the customer and that is why I offer this scenario as a possible repair to our situation. There is of course the possibility that the school will opt not to use us again for future business and begin trading with a competitor. This is a risk that we must take as this risk is much less than the risk involved in a child’s health, our reputation, or being presented with a class action lawsuit. The next option would also cause our company to incur loss, but it would mitigate the amount needed to finance another production run. One positive factor on our side is that at least we didn’t see a loss from shipping. Being that these items are still resident within our warehousing, we can simply dispose of them by means supported by the EPA. The option is to simply let the customer know about the mishap and offer to refund their money on the whistle only. That of course could only...

Conceivability and Possibility

...Guide to Possibility In his scholarly article entitled, Does Conceivability Entail Possibility (2002), Professor David J. Chalmers of the University of Arizona examines the argument that to conceive of something necessarily entails its possibility. Chalmers states that arguments regarding conceivability and possibility typically consist of three parts; the first is the epistemic claim---conceived statement (S); the second is the modal claim---because S is conceived of, S is necessarily possible; and the third is the metaphysical claim, consisting of an assertion about the nature the universe. For example, I can conceive of that my mind exists independent of my brain, therefore it is possible that my mind exists independent of my brain, meaning that the mind is not reducible to the brain. Similarly, I can conceive of seeing without eyes, therefore it is possible that I can see without eyes, meaning that sight is not reducible to eyes, but is something independent of the eyes. But is it? In this second example, in particular, the distinction between a metaphysical possibility and a natural possibility is clear. While it is perhaps metaphysically possible to see without eyes---in a different world with different physical laws that do not require eyes for sight---in our present world, it is not naturally or physically possible to see without eyes. In broader terms, the metaphysical possibility of S does not necessarily translate to the physical or natural possibility of S. Says...

Resurrection Is More Likely to Be True Than Reincarnation. Discuss

...concerning life after death involve some kind of deity or god helping things along. A similarity between the two approaches I’m looking at (resurrection and reincarnation) is the fact they do not necessarily need to involve a god or deity in order to work. Although many use the example of the resurrection of Christ to say that there must have been a god involved, I will once more state that I don’ believe that resurrection or reincarnation has to be contingent on a supreme being, but instead just necessary, infinite natural laws that control and regulate themselves. Already, this has implications for religious and non-religious people. Essentially, it could mean that those who do not believe in a god or deity may still believe in the possibility of an afterlife (for example, an atheist may still believe in ‘ghosts’, in the classical sense), and although religious believers may use a god in their ideas about afterlife, it doesn’t have to be a part of their beliefs. In fact, looking from Hegel’s viewpoint of the rational kernel and the irrational husk, it could be quite easy to dismiss ‘afterlife’ to the irrational husk of religion. But where would be the fun in that? The main difference between resurrection and reincarnation lies in the definitions themselves: resurrection being when a being returns to life some time after they have died and reincarnation being some sort of ‘spirit’ within which, upon death, leaves one body to enter...
